People with REALLY long usernames

He’s still an asshole, though.

clayton_e— you would happen to be referring to me, you aaardvark-molesting SOB, now would you? :wally

Why is that? Because he came here to have fun? Don’t we all? (Well, no. I guess some, like you and Clayton come to troll to exorcise (or in this case exercise) your personal demons.

  • Tip to you two and all of today’s youth: “Plastic”

You and ** clayton_e **haven’t been around long enough to know that at one time the complaint about long names was that it widened the actual thread. The software was changed, so that the name now word-wraps. At the time, this “problem” about the thread list was also vetted, and it appeared not worth modifying, because so few people have old screen settings any more, and it also didn’t really make anything unreadable, just different.

Interesting names are definitely part of the fun posting at this site. Lots of places just use parts of your real name or real life nickname.

I’ve got to change my name to make it more interesting.
Any suggestions?

It does indeed. No one ever refers to me as “Mars Horizon”, it’s always just “Mars”.

Which is fine with me. After all, it’s not my real name

(Although I can imagine my wife’s reaction if I told her I wanted to name our future child “Mars Horizon [Our Last Name]”

Heh.

Have you thought of adding horns? Or possibly a propeller?

Costermonger, I think you might want to check your forum descriptions about that. Clayton_e didn’t start a thread just to ask how long user names can be, he started it specifically to flame you for having an excessively long name. And obviously if he had started this thread in ABTM, a mod would have come screeching in to lock it.

**

Or write like you, for that matter.

I guess I am in this category too. I wonder how long I can get it before the mods force spaces into it. My name is meant to be said really fast so, I didn’t want spaces. For what it’s worth, I have seen other users with much longer names than mine.

I did mention that much of this thread was lost in the little sdmb snafu of the last few days, so let me explain my point.

To those of you who had followed this thread you’ll remember that I explained in detail (in posts that were lost) that I was not just starting this thread to be pissed at someone, I was starting it to attempt to bring this to the attention of the public for the possibility of a policy change on the boards.
Threads that have to do with board policy go in the pits, it’s just how it is.
I won’t rewrite everything, but I did mention that I didn’t have anything personal against barrow boy because simply I didn’t know anything about him. I mentioned that he’d probably be a great addition to the sdmb group, I had no reason to believe otherwise.

And barrow boy, now that I look at your very long thread I realized that you either didn’t look at all the posts before they were lost (they were up there for a while, and you responded after some of them) on my explenations, or you’re just playing off the loss of some posts and my own ideas to make me look bad by hitting all the right spots, making it look like I don’t have any idea what I’m doing. But this is just my own theory, ignore it if you’d like.
And thank you,** A wizard song for thee**.

So let me repeat.

We discussed this to death a 2 years ago. At the time there was a rash of people who were creating long nicks for the express purpose of having a long nick. The mods and admins obviously and rightly frowned on that, and a handful of people had to change it. BUT(and this is my point), they also pointed out(and I was mentioned specifically) that if you have a long nick and a good reason/back story, then you’re fine. Here is the thread in question. Note that Tuba posts, Alphagene posts, and my name is mentioned specifically. No requests for me to change then, and Alpha specically says I’m fine. So until one of them change their mind I’m saying as I am.

Oh and I should point out this really isn’t an attack on anyone, especially clayton. It was obviously long before most of the people in this thread were members, and hasn’t really been brought up since then. Also, ignore the whole side discussion/argument about Sangria, its over and done with.

Out of thread reference, lost in the crash. I still won’t read his posts, though.

Does it ever. I must have at least eight variations of my name around these and other boards where I also use this name.

Then again, usernames can also spawn long username variations, such as Flaming Hamster Z, so I guess we we will have long usernames or variations for a while!

FYI: VBulletin options, settable by Admins, include both a maximum and a minimum user name length allowed. Personally, I think 3…15 is quite reasonable, and would probably fit 95% of SDMB users, but it is evident that the SDMB Admins have decided to allow a greater range. Surely they have their reasons?

Musicat - I think you have found the answer. When I signed up the limit was a mere 25. Now it’s 30.
The reason it’s not a stingy 15 is obviously that C. K. Dexter Haven and Arnold Winkelried would then be forced to change as well. But, as their names indicate, some people just get more expansive when picking names. We all have different tastes. De gustibus non est disputatum. Vivent longtemps la différence!

O.K. I just had to chime in here, thoes of you who don’t
like long screen names are SO lucky! I was going to
go with:

This one is guaranteed to piss off everyone. It’s to long,
it wont wrap and (as an added bonus) its inflammatory, (no pun
intended), great for religious opinion threads.

So to me Costermonger means barrow boy Is just fine.
I wager in with the opinion that the OP didn’t need to sting
quite so hard even if the name puts the boards consistency out a bit.
As for a long name calling attention, I believe this has to do with
how clever your name is not how BIG. I can appreciate how it messes
with the eyes and all but this is supposed to be in good fun, and
if you cant start out by having a funky user name then WTF.
so without any real offense to the OP - Lighten up dude, its
only a game
