What were they originally trying for, I wonder?
I’m sorry but the NYC club names Ramrod and Mineshaft will never be beat.
Even if someone managed to figure out this is “Utopia on Earth”, what makes that perfect for a gay bar? Do gays have a lock on Utopias? I don’t get it.
Yes, OP, please come back and explain to this gay man why this is a great name for, in particular, a gay bar? Please make the explanation simple, because I’m obviously not too bright.
But not A Gay Bar. Because that would imply there was more than one and gay people could choose which one they go to. And being gay is not a choice.
When I lived in Lancaster, CA back in the '80s there was a gay bar called The Back Door. The sign out front said, ‘Entry at rear’.
In the mid 70’s there was a gay bar in Monterey, CA, called The Gilded Cage. Kind of a cool name.
Here in Philly, we have the Gayborhood (note- That’s not me being derogatory. That’s the official name of that section of the city. The crosswalks have rainbows painted on the street. All street signs in the Gayborhood have small rainbow flags on their lower right corner.) OTTOMH I know Woody’s is a gay club. None of my friends being bar types, I don’t know the names of any gay BARS.
Mostly I responded cuz I don’t get the OP either and to say I’ve long wanted to market a liquor at a certain portion of lesbians and call it - Diesel fuel.
Yes, and I remember both of them very fondly.
And I don’t get the OP either.
Both long gone, of course.
But let’s not forget the Crisco Disco. Or the Ninth Circle. Or the Cellbock or the Manhole (those two were more sex clubs than bars, if I remember right. Not even sure they served alcohol).
I always liked “Woof”, gay bar in Madison, WI. The street outside hosts concerts during the summer, and their bathrooms are much cleaner than your typical porta potty.
I can’t help my self…NSFW. The OOOOOOOOOOOOLD Glory Hole.
[And to all the others who have asked this question:).]
I don’t know why I think it is a perfect name for a gay bar. Does everything have to have a reason? When I was a little kid we had an albino Briard we called ‘Tiffany’. Why? Why not? What else were we supposed to call her.
But FWIW, gay bars in my area often have esoteric names like that. And one is called Cobalt, which I could never figure out. It must be a reference to something. But exactly what, I don’t know.
