More like, probably too old to do the job for potentially 8 years. He’s 70 after all. Hillary is 66 and that’s pushing it too.
It may be early but I definately think Scott Walker and/or Paul Ryan will take a shot. Whether either gets the nomination or wins the election is another thing.
(Remember it was I who said Ryan would be on the ticket in '12 a full two years before it happened.)
I will be surprised if Jeb doesn’t throw his hat in. I’ll be shocked but ecstatic if Christie doesn’t.
I’m sure there will be 3 or 4 more, at least in the begining of the primary season.
Is it too late for Bob Dole to give it another go?
I would vote for a dead Bob Dole over a live Ted Cruz.
In an alternate universe, Jeb would be a pretty good candidate.
He’d be a hopeless candidate in the current Republican primary climate. The Tea Party will hate him, because he’s a Bush and part of the neocon wing they hate. The extreme right will hate him, because he’s pro-immigration reform and is married to a Latina (he even gave his speeches in English and rather good Spanish as governor of Florida).
That might all be offset by his appeal among independents - but he’s a Bush, and you know what that means.
I’m still going with Marco Rubio.
Ryan is damaged goods, and seems shell-shocked. I don’t know that I’ve heard his name once since the 2012 election.
You do deserve a hat tip, though.
Democratic side- it’s Hillary. Done deal. Sure, the Republican base hates her as much as it hates Obama and they will repeat “Benghazi!” every minute from the time she announces to the end of her second term. It makes no difference, she will run and she will win it all, twice.
Republican side- do we really need to have anyone? It will not be Christie. Far too moderate, he treated Obama with respect during Sandy, and he even nominated a Muslim judge. He doesn’t appear hateful enough to appeal to the Republican base. It will not be Rubio. The Republicans are not about to nominate a Latino. Sure, they want their votes, but not if it means doing something icky like nominating one for president or not being for deporting everybody who isn’t a citizen. It will not be Jeb Bush. Nobody wants Bush. What’s that leave? Rand Paul and Ted Cruz. Whichever one of them fucks up the least will get it.
This is pretty much what everyone was saying around this time in 2006, wasn’t it?
Yeah, but do you see another Obama on the horizon? I don’t think Cory Booker is interested in prime time yet.
Of course it is, but there is no Obama waiting in the wings. After watching the Republicans play Biff to Obama’s George McFly for the past several years, Democrats are going to want someone who isn’t afraid to fight. Hillary is about as tough as a two dollar steak and that’s exactly what the Dems will be looking for in 2016.
Christie is generally popular because he is authentic. I like the guy, and I don’t even agree with him much. He won’t be popular with the Republican base, however, because he is authentic. The other guys can do things with a straight face that he would be unwilling to do. (“Bengazhi,” for example, or “Obamacare takes away our freedom,” as another) I don’t see much chance for an honest conservative to get much traction in the current Republican party.
It’ll be fun watching Christie get in the face of people demanding that he wear a bigger flag lapel pin, though.
I think Warren can take it from her if she chooses to run. A lot of people don’t like the thought of a Clinton dynasty and see Hillary as part of the old guard. I think Warren has a real shot if she chooses to run. She’s great at hitting that populist note.
I’m sticking with Jeb Bush … Marco Rubio for vice president would swing a lot of votes away from the democrats. The same democrats of all races poor, black, white, latino types that stood in long lines for hours to vote for President Obama could turn the tide for the Republican ticket.
Who was it that said the rich pick who runs for office, but the poor decide which one will win?
Well, sure, they could turn the tide. But why would they? What does Rubio offer, and how is Rubio as the VP candidate (a role that does not appear to gain much in the way of votes) bring them in?
You know, you guys saying Rubio really need to consider the election schedule. Rubio’s part of the class that will have to run in 2016. If he gets the nomination for President and loses he’s out of office, potentially forever. He’s awful young for that.
I just don’t think he takes that chance when he can wait and not have to risk losing his Senate seat AND the Presidency.
Very unlikely, IMO. The Republicans need to change in a major way, as a party, before they get more than a tiny portion of minority support.
This is why I think Christie will do better in the primaries than people think. He’s not afraid to verbally slap people down, and he’s good at it. I think if he slaps down one or two people in the the primary debates, people might think he’s the strong leader they’re looking for. Plus, I don’t think he’s so ‘authentic’ that he wouldn’t lean right some during the primaries. Not batshit-crazy right, but enough to placate people when combined with his debate performances.
He also had some sort of lap-band surgery, so his weight won’t be as great come 2016.
I’m hoping Christie doesn’t run just because I don’t want to hear a year of every lazy Doper, TV late night host and wannabe comedian make the same lazy fat-jokes over and over again.
I’m still recovering from the late 90’s, when merely mentioning anything that vaguely had to do with Bill Clinton meant some idiot had to jump in with an obvious blow-job innuendo. I can’t go through that again!
It is looking increasingly certain that Hillary Clinton will be the 2016 Presidential nominee for the Democratic Party with potential rivals such as Elizabeth Warren advocating for her to run. Biden will almost certainly not run if Hillary does and while Brian Schweitzer has made some noise about running, without a Senate seat as a platform, he would have been out of the spotlight too long and unknown nationally come 2016.
I see a lot of people putting their hopes on Hillary … hard to tell if they are male or female with it being pretty even on here, but???
I think there are way too many red necks that will vote against any woman being the President of the United States no matter who she is and if the minorities chime in with them it will be another lose for women to rule. They will come out of the wood work so to speak to insure her lose.
I was not aware of this fact from:Jonathan Chance
This could cause a conflict, but isn’t it true that Rubio will be in Iowa too and that is a good testing for anyone running for office. I’ll wait to see how he does in Iowa.
