OK, so it’s no secret that I’m not PETA-lover. I’m more a cow-lover (rare, a touch of pepper, baked tater and spinach on the side with a full-bodied red, thanks).
But those who think everything PETA has ever done is some kind of violent, counter-productive drama-fest would do well to look here.
PETA entered two cows into the Cows On Parade program in New York. One got tossed for being insufficiently frivolous (PETA’s suing, they’ll lose, but that’s just silly political stuff on both sides), but the other got accepted and is currently hanging out somewhere in our city. It is a cow wearing faux-leather clothing, making the point that it is easy to find fashionable items not made from animal products.
I think it’s cool. And I believe in giving credit where credit is due. So I say to PETA, “Good show, folks.”
I’ll have a separate rant later on how stupid the whole Cows on Parade idea is and on how I’ll eventually have to get all medieval on one of the stupid things after looking at too many Wall St-themed cows. Yes, I know. It’s really a bull. As in Bull and Bear. How droll. Tee Fucking Hee.
Most of PETA’s stunts make me think they’re a bunch of way over the top left wing nuts (like Greenpeace on acid). But this one must give a grudging nod of approval.
If only they’d learn from their own example and do more things like that. I for one am not holding my breath. The radicals will rear their ugly (or is it fugly?) heads again soon.
Clever, verbose, even kinda cute. Nothing objectionable about stating your views publicly in a peaceful, unobnoxious manner.
Having said that, I’ve got a sudden hankerin’ for pork fried rice and pork egg foo young. Anybody else wanna order from Wok and Dog while I’ve got them on line?
And it is the radicalism and the vegan agenda that hurts animal rights groups. I used to be a big supporter of the Humane society(I’ve got a plaque somewhere), because I believe cruelty to animals in inhumane. But I believe there is nothing cruel or inhumane about raising an animal and killing it (as quickly as possible) for its meat. Herbivores are designed to get eaten. But, now even the HS is on this “meat is cruelty” kick, so they don’t get my support anymore, even tho their other anti-cuelty programs I support wholeheartedly (and, yes, I have let them know, but…).
Look, you don’t want to eat meat, fine, that is your choice, but don’t try to take meat away from me- that’s MY choice.
No big surprise that this wasn’t as blown up as the PETA pie attacks… why? 'Cuz violence and extreme protests get more air time, that’s why, and PETA knows this. They think “Hey, any attention is good attention… let’s go blow up a beef-packaging assembly line!”
However, with this instance, it seems like they’re getting a bit smarter, not just louder. A kinder, gentler PETA? Hey, it worked for the IRS!!.. didn’t it?
Just because an organization occaisionally does something cool doesn’t mean your opinion of them should change, neccessarily. Hell, the Nazi’s were the first people to link smoking and cancer.
BTW there was a big Animal rights convention here (DC) this weekend. It featured noted intellectual and ethical thinker Alicia Silverstone. One PETA person was bitching that the Media made them “Look like idiots.” I don’t think the media has to try very hard.
Somebody just had to play the Nazi card, huh? While you might think that it sets up an unarguable point, you might have tossed it out there a little too soon.
I prefer to hold off on the Nazi analogies until I’ve run out of other options.
Putting a cow in faux leather(plastic) on a hot day in July is just cruel. Don’t they know that large ruminants already have a problem shedding body heat?
