It’s been confirmed in a press release that after Return of the King, Jackson will make the movie he originally wanted to make, King Kong.
In fact, the Cave Troll was an ode to Kong.
Cool or terrible idea?

Remakes never live up to the original.
There is only one Kong!
Which skyscraper will he climb this time? Will it be set in New York, Chicago, or Malaysia?
More importantly, how much skin will the blonde show?
Well, it sure won’t be the WTC this time.
And how do you know she’ll be blonde?
Ah, how about a cite to the press release? AFAIK, Peter Jackson said a lot about what he wished to do after RoTK - even including the Hobbit!
Tradition.
I know I’m the minority, but I liked the Godzilla remake they did a few years back.
I will likely enjoy Jackson’s Kong too, and really like to see a new Kong vs. Godzilla.
I’d love to see Peter Jackson remake “King Kong”. I think any remake would have to be set in the 1930s - I read in an interview that this is what Jackson has in mind. So I guess Kong would still climb the Empire State Building.
I’m enormously stoked to see a Peter Jackson directed Kong. I didn’t care to watch his earlier stuff, but from Frighteners on, I’ve been a big fan. Some stuff may be disgusting (Dead Alive, Meet the Feebles), but he’s got a wonderful imagination.
By the way, for the one who wanted a cite…
I shifted to Wellington following a job offer from what was then Wingnut films to get into video graphics…
For some reason I was looking foward to doing some photo-realistic fur.
In between organising and shifting and re-convening after the Xmas break, it all fell through, and in the two years after that I became entrenched in the internet, and was dedicated elsewhere when roll-call finally came to get into LOTR.
On reflection, I don’t actually believe that Kong is such a great storyline to bother remaking. The fact that TV here has played ‘Mighty Joe Young’, ‘Congo’, and two other lost-world type African adventures in the last three weeks probably colours my opinion tho’!
Arwen.
Tom Bombadil.
Osgiliath.
I love the idea! After seeing Gollum, you just know that PJ is going to give that big ape a real personality and will know how to work the pathos angle.
That is, if this isn’t just a big joke. It’s April 1 in New Zealand, after all.

Kong drools!
'Zilla Rulez!

That would be a cool movie though. 30’ monkies* are generally neat in my book.
*Before you nitpickers jump on me: Yes, I know the difference between a monkey and an ape.
*Sure, but you don’t know how to pluralize monkey
Paging Andy Serkis for the motion capture suit…
Kong(played by Serkis): The girl is mine…yessssss, must have the girl…they came to us…tooks us aways, they did!
Excellent! That’s the only way to make the story interesting, is to make it a period piece + pulp/serial monster movie. I can already imagine how he’d do the island segments.
As long as it doesn’t have freaky-bearded Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange playing dumb-as-a-post. And Charles Grodin as the villain.
As pointed out in other threads, remakes CAN be better than the original, (Maltese Falcon, Wizard of Oz), tho I’m not sure there has even been a remake of an already good movie that was better.
I don’t see a great need for KK, but it is PJ’s dream, and now that he has the clout to do whatever he wants, he’s doing his dream.
We will see cool WWI era airplanes if nothing else…
Brian
WWI biplanes, the Empire State Building, and island full of dinosaurs, . . . . One can only hope.
And, Ethelrist, I am positive I saw it written in the Scriptures: “The Bride of Kong must be played by an actress who has bleached her hair many shades lighter than her natural color.”
