Well maybe not the whole town and we really just touched up the trim a little, in a shade of taupe, not red. Jadailey, Mauvaise, Strainger and myself had out get together that we planned when we hijacked Sdimbert’s about meeting dopers in Scottsdale. Dan Ryan’s was actually pretty dead except for some prom kids but Mauvaise and Strainger managed to get pretty giddy on nothing more than club soda and jalepeño pizza. When they started wheeling in the PA system to turn the place into a hip hop club we adjourned to Coffee Plantation near the Biltmore and complained about the unseasonably cold weather and evil oppressive big box stores. That seemed a good cue to walk over to Borders books and music. If you can’t beat 'em… just give up. I surprised myself by actually liking the store, it wasn’t so oppressive and evil as big box chain stores go. I think the atmosphere made it feel more like the independent bookstores they’ve crushed out of existence. I did my part to further corporate homogenization of America by buying a copy of Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City, Joe Jackson’s most recent CD Night and Day II and Calvin and Hobbes Lazy Sunday Book
You forgot to mention that one of the prom kids was wearing an all red tux (yes, red) and carrying a white “walking stick” with red stripes.
And all you people living in places where it’s still snowing, hush up about our “cold” weather. To us, if it dips below 70, it’s time to break out the parkas.
Yes, our dopefest wound up in a bookstore … I think I referred to us as the Anti-Spiffle, but what can I say: we all love books! I bought Colleen McCullough’s First Man in Rome.
I had a great time last night meeting Mauvaise and jadailey, and getting to see Padeye again. Dan Ryan’s has really gone downhill since the last time I’d been there. Next time it’ll have to be Cajun food at Copeland’s. Oo-WEE! Then, we can go trash jadailey’s house.
Mauvaise, I’m afraid you would’ve laughed at the fuchsia tux I wore my Senior year. It had a nice paisley pattern though. It was real purty.
As far as the weather being too cold – are you kidding? It was perfect! In fact, I’m currently lobbying God to allow Phoenix to enjoy this weather year round. So far it has not been an easy task.
I enjoyed our little venture into Border’s. My purchase consisted of The Thomas Paine Reader and Last Refuge of Scoundrels, neither of which was what I was planning to read next, but those two caught my interest at the moment. After we broke up for the night and everyone else was out of sight, I went back into Border’s and bought a stack of porno mags.
I still can’t believe they turn that place into a hip-hop club.
I think my two big dogs will have something to say about that. You’re more than welcome to bop over afterward, though. Ahwatukee/Chandler area, everyone - even if you didn’t make it to the anti-Spiffle last night, come on out next time (no, it hasn’t been scheduled yet).
Truly, I also had a wonderful time. And I’m with Mauvaise about the red tux, but there’s more: it was three-piece, with a lab-coat length jacket. ALL RED! Plus the candy-cane stick. Yikes. And hip-hop. What’s that all about?
Lessee, to keep up with the Borders purchases: I picked up a copy of the Adobe GoLive 5.0 Bible (since I didn’t get much documentation with the actual software when I bought it), Bill Veeck’s autobiography - “Veeck - As in Wreck,” a bartending guide, and several tiny books featuring figure skaters (a birthday gift for my cousin.) Oh, and Mauvaise - I’ll dig out that extra hardcover of “Good Omens” for you if you want it.
Gasp Ohhhh! I’d love it! Thank you!!!
I think you fellas better bring pictures of these “outfits” to the next gathering … we need proof that you speak the truth.
