Photobucket Sucks. Help me find a new home

for my pictures.

Photobucket has always been slow for my. Opening, loading whatever.

Now it’s locked on a user agreement pages that I can’t bypass or even agree with.

Who do you kids use for your online photo storage and why?

thanks

Imageshack. It’s simple, it’s free, and it’s the first one I found. Mostly it’s the first one I found and it works well enough for me.

Flickr is good if you want something integrated with Yahoo. Picasa, however, is integrated with Google. Imgur is not integrated with anything but it performs well in my experience.

I use imgur and Picasa.

imgur is all I ever use. Imageshack makes you login to get more than 1 direct link, which is bullshit. With imgur I can upload 50 pictures and get direct links to them all, without needing to log in. imgur will convert lossless formats to jpgs against your will, though (I think all the free image processors do this if you don’t have an account), but it’s still the best I’ve found.

If you don’t mind paying, I highly recommend SmugMug.

It has a very clean look, is fast, and there are plenty of options available for sharing your pics with others. Also, the Statistics section is very interesting (shows number of views and what sites have linked to your photos).

If interested, I can PM you an offer code to save $5 off the normal $35 a year.

That’s what I use. One of the principals of Smugmug (“Baldy”) runs a motorcycle related message board that I have used a lot, so I started using Smugmug as a way of returning the favor…but I have been pretty happy with it. Years ago there were some browser compatibility issues, but those seem to be resolved of late.

SlickPic.com is TOTALLY the best.

I did my research and checked out all the popular sites and this one blew away the competition. I HATED the new photobucket layout with a PASSION because of the way it displayed my my photography. SlickPic actually goes so far as to give you OPTIONS as to how you want your pics to be displayed. These are the reasons I left Photobucket and I can tell you that SlickPic is the exact OPPOSITE. I love my new home!

#1 - The albums use to display the entire pictures, but now it only shows a CROPPED PORTION of each. You have to click EACH PIC and go to a NEW PAGE just to view it. - I use the site to display my photography and have over 200 shots. People aren’t going to click on 200+ images PLUS an additional 200 clicks to keep going back to the album! It’s too much effort so now, my work will mostly go unseen.
#2 - In addition to only showing a portion of each pic, they put these POINTLESS FRAMES around them. “Oh, how pretty! I knew my photography was missing something!”
#3 - My albums use to display SIX pics per row (of the ENTIRE PIC) and now it only displays FOUR per row. And if you open the stupid albums tab, it reduces to only THREE pics per row! What a complete waste of space! - Again, I have over 200 pics. No one wants to do that much scrolling! Not to mention, that someone who’s not familiar with PB might not even notice the hidden tab to see that I have more albums.
#4 - The albums use to display each entire picture AND put 6 per row AND still be able to display the albums list! I’m BAFFLED and PISSED that someone actually decided this “new look” is somehow better!

The new photobucket layout SUCKS!!!

i like Picasa.

Get your own domain and install one of the good gallery apps on it. You will have total control over the display, access, etc. and with a good hosting choice you’ll have speed to spare.

About $100 a year and all the benefits of your own domain name, email, etc.

Flickr is very user-friendly but requires a Yahoo account.

Imageshack doesn’t require an account but has a tendency to delete photos randomly.

Don’t know about any of the others, except Photobucket, which sucks donkey balls – stay away from them :o

Ya know, I never really thought about it because I thought it cost more money than that. I’ll definitely look into it. Thanks.

I have a FREE user account on the SDF Public Access Unix system. I think you get even more privileges with several levels of paid membership, but basic access is free. You sign up and create an account and username for yourself. Basic services with the free account include some disk space to store files, a user account that you can rlogin or telnet into and get a Unix shell command prompt, and you get a web site all your own. My web site there is http://doggie.freeshell.org (There’s really nothing there but some trivial textbook beginner’s JavaScript exercises and my Unix Administration class blog.) If you’re into creating your own web site, I believe their web server supports PHP and you can also get a MySQL database (but you may need a paid membership for that).

You could even remote-mount your freeshell directory, which makes it look like just another folder on your own home machine, and you can thus copy files to/from there with the plain old file copying commands on your machine. (I am doing this from a Linux machine at home. I don’t know how that plays with a Windows machine, although I expect it’s workable. I have a home Windows XP machine alongside my Linux machine, and I’ve gotten them to share files and directories nicely.)

I created a sub-directory for pictures, Index of /pictures – You can take a look there to see. I haven’t bothered to create an organized page, so all you get is a directory listing of the pictures, but you can click on them to see the pictures. You could certainly create any web page of your own and organize it any way you like. For example, you could create a page full of photo thumbnails that the viewer could click on to see the full-size photos. I just never bothered to do that.

Okay, upon re-reading the SDF rules: You might need to pay a membership fee to get enough privileges to do most of what you want, but it’s only a one-time $36 for a lifetime membership. It was free while I was in school a few years ago, but I paid the membership after that.

Depends what you want to do with your pictures. I’ve always thought of Photobucket as just a place to dump pics you want to link to on message boards etc, rather than a site to keep your photo collection.

I use Flickr Pro which has unlimited storage, mainly as a cheap “backup” for my photos, although it’s not really meant that way, and I can imagine downloading them all again if I lost my local copies would take a long time.

I use Google Plus. Most people I share pics with have Gmail, it is extremely easy to use and Works well.

Do any of these sites do image coding for you? How about the ability to add captions as well?

I’ve been using Flickr for about 6 years now, and I find it has plenty of ways to organise photos. You can add captions and tags to them, you can locate them on the map, you can group them in sets and collections, and you can join groups and contribute your photos to those groups. I’ve started about a dozen groups, including one of Police memorials and one about Ohio architecture. You can also create galleries of other people’s photos – my best one contains pictures of the Oval Office in the White House, including some replicas in presidential museums. On top of that, if you make your pictures public, they get indexed in Google Images. Overall, I find Flickr does pretty well every thing I want it to.

…I will echo those recommending Flickr: its been around for years and will do the job. Picasa is another option and if you download and use the Picasa editing software it can make managing your galleries much easier. I personally mainly use Photoshelter: its a paid service (similar to Smugmug) and am currently hosting over 100 gig of images there both as cloud back up and as a means of distributing images to clients.

+1 for Smugmug, I like and use it. It does RAW, something I wanted and other services didn’t do well or at all, though I admit I haven’t checked the competition lately.
