I’m hoping to take some along with me to Kzinhome. I figure I can use them as inadvertent bodyguards while I get the lay of the land.
Besides, I thought you’d promised me something to do with alligators for that whole unicorn thing a while back…

How about—Riverdale?
Outside of Archie’s hi-jinx, it seems like a nice little town!
It was my assumption that this was a fantasy thang, and we should not consider time away from family. VeryCoolSpouse would surely kill me if I were gone for more than a week, since that would mean dealing with 8 kids alone. Clearly that would not be a working solution.
I humbly beg Gay Deceiver’s pardon for spacing* her name; I plead early-onset senility. Fortunately Hilda is a pretty darned sane human and is unlikely to cause one’s demise (and likely to prevent Gay from demising one) unless given clear provocation.
I’d love to visit the Shire and environs, but I fear that the opportunity for not returning would dissuade me. <sigh> If there were a guaranteed return, I’d travel there in a micro-split-second. The lack of plumbing wouldn’t bother me in the least. On reflection, the opportunity to taste a “proper 1420” might push me over the edge–send me to the beginning of the 4th Age, please!
I 'd like to spend my exile in Discworld.
Not sure what job I’d like to do though.
I was thinking of Nevia from Heinlein’s *Glory Road *- the natives are extremely friendly - but then I remembered dragons, horned ghosts, etc. etc. As I run through the fictional worlds I enjoy I realise most of them either have nasty people with lethal weapons that they use distressingly frequently or a total lack of modern medicene and conveniences - quite often both!
I think I’ll try Pournelle and Stirling’s Sparta [the planet!] shortly after Lysander is acclaimed Emperor. High standard of living, relatively peaceful (at least we know it is not invaded or bombed) and an interesting four years to study.
I’ll join you there.
Although I suspect we’d probably hang out at different orgies.
And I might spend a bit more time reading Shakespeare than you.
Well part of the fun of the Culture is that you could probably get neural reconstruction and make yourself bisexual (in fact I’d probably do that). As for reading more Shakespeare, screw that, I’ll try out some VRs that put me directly in the plays.
Well I might try changing gender, so maybe we would “ahem” bump into each other.
The Culture is amazing and throws up so many interesting questions. I still like the fact that in his first (sf) book they were introduced as the “enemy”. Took me a few books to try and get whether Banks loved or hated the Culture. I think the answer is both.
Yes, I think that was a very interesting way to introduce them too, however when recommending his books to people I would always suggest starting with the Player of Games because it directly constrasts the Culture with a society not a million miles away from our own.
