Pick my next DVD

I plan on getting a new DVD movie on Thursday (my day off) and want to get something that is a bit off the wall.

I will buy myself and you one (or another of your choice if you already have it) if I pick yours.

Rules:

  1. I could list all my DVD’s but I have over 100 of them, so that would waste space. If you list one that I already have I will say it.
  2. I want something that is out on DVD (duh!) and is weird or unusual. No Gladiator, X-men, etc. An Indie movie would be good as well as long as it is in DVD format.
  3. If I pick yours I will buy that movie (or one of your choice) and send it to you gratis. I will email you when I pick.
  4. All picks must be in by 6pm CST Thursday the 18th.

So there you go. Pick my DVD.

The Man with Two Brains.

Aaaaahhhmelllmaahheyyy!
I am going to assume you already have… The Seven Samuri.
If not you must buy it.

I vote for Stop Making Sense, the Talking Heads concert film. I just bought my DVDplayer and that (along withthe Kubrick Box Set0 was the first thing I bought. Its awesome, ths sound is great, and the movie (or more precicely David Byrne and Jonathat Demme’s portrait of him) are simply stunning. This would of course be predicated on your being a talking heads fan, but I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who isn’t at least a sorta Talking Heads fan, and really, thats enough.

Also great with a little herbal recreation and a cuddly female.

I, Claudius. It’s spendy, about 70 bucks, so my alternate choice: A Clockwork Orange

Just noticed Bad Hat mentioned Kubrick. I wasn’t plagarizing. Promise. So a 3rd pick. Das Boot - The Director’s cut.

“The Illustrated Man” by Ray Bradbury.

Rod Steiger & Claire Bloome (sp?)

Interesting/Indie DVD’s:

American Movie: a hilarious documentary on the making of a horror movie. The filmmaker that’s making it is well-spoken yet…very crude and blunt. Also, the movie they made Coven is included on the DVD.
Tetsuo: The Iron Man: a visual explosion, to say the least. It’s all done in live stop-motion animation. Has to be seen to be understood.
Run, Lola, Run: a great German movie. Basically, a woman is presented with a problem, and it’s then shown 3 ways (depending on what happens and what she decides to do, the story changes).
Pi: a mind-blowing film. A paranoid mathematical genius finds the secret of pi, and thus also unlocks the stock market and God. There are others that want his secret, too. His paranoia is show wonderfully through the camera.
Cube: a bunch of strangers are transported into a cube for apparently no reason. They try to escape, but there are traps around every turn.
Crumb: a documentary about the messed-up life of the creator of such cartoons as Fritz the Cat. His family is very…interesting.

The Brain From Planet Arous

I have yet to actually see the thing, but it’s the stuff of legend, and it just came out on DVD. Shots from it were featured in both The Man With Two Brains and the “distraction” TV that loops while you’re waiting in line for Space Mountain at Disney World. Shows a disembodied brian floating around attacking people! I mean, how could you not like that???

Happiness
or Mr. Death

Or Happiness.

For some reason, my link to “Mr. Death” doesn’t seem to be working. You can look it up at the same site as the “Happiness” link. Oh, and if you haven’t seen it, “Miller’s Crossing”.

Naked Lunch
Or Brazil

Or, anything with Bridget the Midget :stuck_out_tongue:

I have two words for you:

SHOGUN ASSASSIN

This is an AMAZING DVD experience, and to back it up you DON´T have to send me anything. DVD´s only cost about a dollar where I live in Asia, so the mailing cost alone would outweigh any gain.

But if you can get your hands on this CD (I know it´s available in Iceland and Japan, but I haven´t checked the states!) you will not regret it. There is a new uncut version out on DVD only, I think that´s also the only DVD version ever made of the movie. It was widely banned in Europe for a while (they are a bigger audience for asian fringe movies) so it sort of dropped out of the spotlight for years. Somehow it got reclassified as an “18 Or Over” movie, probably 'cause decapitations and the severing of limbs are more common now a days.

The movie tells the story of a Samurai in the Shoguns ancient army in Japan. He was the Shogun´s decapitator. (perhaps some of you have heard the Wu-Tang song that begins with the opening dialogue from the movie? I forget the name of the song)

Anyway, the guy gets in trouble with the Shogun because he is the only one who doesn´t fear him mortally (it´s an Asian thing). So the Samurai sets out on a mission of survival and revenge against the entire Japanese empire, with his two or three year old son with him!!

Anyway, it´s a MUST! Scratch that, it used to be a must, now that it´s UNCUT (much more graphic and nasty) AND on DVD, it´s a bare necessity of life!

It´s a remix of the “Lone Wolf” movies I´ve heard (they sorta took the best parts of the series and made this one mega-movie), but I think they are only on tape.

You can apparently buy the DVD here: http://homepages.stayfree.co.uk/chazza/shogun.htm

Learn more about the Lone Wolf and Cub thing here:

Anyway, this post is long enough, but it´s a movie I love dearly. A fan of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon should check it out, although it´s much more graphic and less magical.

Not sure what type of genre you’re thinking of, so I’ll just list a few suggestions from different styles.

Titus - It won’t be out on Thursday, scheduled for March 13, I highly recommend you put it on your short list.

Sliding Doors - Truely excellent film that many have not heard of, very unique plot and film style outlining two possible outcomes of a woman’s life in parallel.

The Abyss, Special Addition - Nuff said, and you get to watch the film with alternate endings.

JFK, Directors Cut - Also nuff said, with 17 extra minutes of footage.

Arthur - This movie never gets old for me, it cracks me up. “Where’s the rest of this moose? You must have hated this moose.”

I’ve got a hunch you already have this one, but I’ll give it a shot.

Gattaca - One of my all time fave movies, very smart Sci-Fi.

The Criterion Collection edition of Carnival of Souls, a cult thriller from 1962. A weird combination of experimental camera work, a “Twilight Zone” episode, and “The Sixth Sense.”

Wow… Some amazing choices here. 26 hours to go.

FTR, it’s not all done in stop-motion, but the parts that are are incredibly well done. Of course I’m not quite sure that seeing the movie means you’ll understand it…
