I don’t know wherre else to ask this without looking like a complete tool, so I guess I’ll try here.
I’ve been around long enough to either experience the origin of popular SDMB catchphrases or suss them out on my own, but I cannot, for the life of me, figure out where “When come back, bring pie” comes from. Any chance someone might take pity on me and let me in on the joke?

Would it be a ridiculous/pointless idea to post a sticky thread either here in ATMB, or possibly in MPSIMS, detailing the highlights of “SDMB pop culture” references? Sort of an MPS FAQ. There aren’t a huge number of these, but weebl’s pie, Hi Opal, and the hamsters seem to come up with stunning regularity. Would this save enough bandwidth or storage space on the server to be worthwhile?
Maybe, if this is considered worth the bandwidth/effort, use one of the threads Algernon links to in this thread as the jumping off point?
Or, it could all be added as a few more posts to the “posting guidelines” FAQ.
That would take all the fun out of it. People would search that thread and use the “SDMB pop culture references” as often as possible. And you wouldn’t get the subtle hints that tell you how well informed a person is on what is going on here at the boards. I know I’m talking to someone at least somewhat literate in SDMB history (and therefore probably more mature in their overall posting habits [this is a streach on PROBABLY]).

Besides, some people would then misuse certain cultural elements. For example, “Hi Opal.” Many people just chuck it onto the third item of their list, no matter how long it was. But see, that doesn’t make any sense because it came about due to Opal’s claim that a list must have at least three items to be a list. So if someone didn’t have a third item, they would throw “Hi Opal” on the end to bring the list up to three.
That’s been bugging me for a while now, and I’m glad I got a chance to get that off my chest.
Yes, but things change; God never intended us to grind up his beautiful wheat to make bread. Putting ‘Hi Opal’ as the third item of any list is an extension of the popular joke, just the same as “my cat’s breath smells of pie”.
