I got a Wii last week. It comes with Sports Resort and I also got Fit Plus.
As part of a special offer, I now have a $50 credit to Amazon’s game store. Please suggest games for me.
I would like at least one cooperative game that my lady and I can enjoy together. I want to avoid realistic shooter games. And we want a good lightsaber game to spar each other.
My best suggestion for good cooperative games, besides Rock Band, is to check out the Lego games and pick out one with good reviews and with a theme you’d both like. It sounds like Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga might be up your alley.
The BoomBlox games are pretty good and great fun played with someone. They’re not particularly challenging, though (which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what kinds of games you typically play; my parents like it if that gives you an idea).
I always recommend the Super Mario Galaxy games for newcomers. My wife has rarely played video games, but she loved the first game (got all the stars) and when she gets time, wants to play the second one. It’s a fun game! It does have co-op, but not true 2-player. The second person is more like an assistant to the first.
Also, I second the choice of Lego Star Wars, but they have a few others (Indiana Jones, Batman, and Harry Potter) if your tastes don’t quite go to Star Wars .
Unfortunately, no-one has made a good player vs. player sword fighting game (you should just stick with sword fighting in Sports Resort). I haven’t played Red Steel 2, so maybe there is something in there, but I don’t think so. There are too many limitations in the technology for good pvp virtual sword fighting. Some examples include losing track of the “center” of the sword, weightlessness of the sword (I’m more likely to flail than to have sharp cuts), and no resistance to the opponent’s weapon.
Mario Kart Wii is a lot of fun, and something the two of you can play together. Star Wars: Force Unleashed is a lot of fun, but mostly a one player game, although there’s an arena-style combat mode for two people to wail away on one another with force powers and light sabres.
Force Unleashed II has come out but I haven’t played it yet. You could likely get the original version pretty cheap, since its a couple years old now.
The games that get the most play in our house are:
Super Mario Bros. Galaxy
Super Mario Bros. Galaxy 2
New Super Mario Bros. for Wii (or whatever. It’s the 2D Mario game for Wii.)
I’d like to try Mario Kart. We also play World of Goo occasionally–should play more.
Edited to add–with the New Super Mario Bros for Wii at least my husband and I can both play, and the results of collaboration/competition can be, er, quite entertaining.
I’ll second the recommendations for Boom Blox and Mario Kart. Both fantastic games.
Smash Bros. is an acquired taste (and, strangely, the N64 original is the biggest thing going among my law school classmates) but if you’re a hardcore Nintendo fan, it’s great.
Definitely pick up a copy of WiiPlay, because there’s nothing more fun than cow racing and laser hockey.
The standard answer for getting one more used to be to buy WiiPlay (which included a bundled-in controller), since you essentially got that game for $10 when you factored in the cost of the controller. However, I don’t think that controller has the MotionPlus feature, if that matters to you.
We recently bought Wii Party. It can be played with 1 - 4 players. It has several different games (from bingo, to board games to minigames) and different levels. I’ve played it with my dad and my 9 year old, and everyone enjoyed it equally. It only uses “Wiimotes” (as my daughter calls them), no need for balance board or nunchucks.
