Pirates of the Caribbean: It's rated "Arrrr!"

Aye.

At first I was hoping that Barbossa wasn’t quite dead by that point, and with the curse reinstated he was saved. But no, that wouldn’t have worked. Too bad. I really liked Barbossa. Maybe they can make a prequel.

Thanks - Sorry, I didn’t realize the question had already been addressed… I don’t much mind missing that scene.
Yeah, Archernar, Barbossa was pretty great. Without him, I’m wondering what they’ll do for a bad guy in the sequel.
I want to see an evil undead (possibly ninja and/or robot) Elizabeth. I think that’d be cool.

Unlikely, but cool.
Kn(there be monsters here)ckers

Does anyone else agree that the reason Sparrow took the coin was that he knew he would have to fight and didn’t want to die? (I know he says “I couldn’t resist” but he’s smarter than that and it came across as a sort of wise-ass crack to me.)

yes, Opal. Most definitely!

It fits with my theory of everything about him being designed to throw people off so he has the upper hand.

Pirate!

:dubious:

Yeah, Duke. Both of our original posts about this are waaayyyy back in this thread. FTR, I believe you were first.

I guess there be no need for swordfighting, then.

:frowning:

Yep, you guys are on the ball - more on the ball than many critics I’ve read who simply described Captain Jack as “drunken”, “wobbly” or “swishy”. No, no, no. Mr. Depp created a character who was crazy like a fox - made everyone underestimate him while he was sizing up the situation. I think if the character had just been dumb he wouldn’t have generated all the interest he has.

Poor reviewers… I think the mistake they’re making comes from looking at Pirates as a silly, mindless Disney summer movie. If you take it in that context, you’re bound to overlook intelligent character development as cheap pandering.

So a reviewer who has sat through countless goofy flicks and lackluster performances has the impulse is to look at this film and say, “Jack waves his hands a lot. Jack talks funny. Must just be for laughs.”

Their blunder lies in presuming that BECAUSE this is a (moderately silly) summer movie it can’t have excellent acting and interesting multi-dimensional characters. It can and does.
Arrrr, we be fighting ignorance, here on the good ship SDMB!

And according to IMDB, Orlando Bloom suggested that whole impersonation. Did anyone’s audience gasp when Sparrow gets impaled by Barbossa? Heh. My favorite Sparrow line (which really is a fragment) is “…and then they made me chief of their tribe”. Also, someone on another board pointed out that Jack only sways on land and he’s rock steady on the boats. Next time I see the movie, I’ll have to pay attention. If that’s true, then Johnny Depp is absolutely brilliant! To make Sparrow’s walk due to sea legs adds a hint of realism to an outlandish character. I cannot wait for the DVD of this movie!

AmericanMaid, love, Johnny Depp is absolutely brilliant regardless.

And when does he say the “… and then they made me chief of their tribe” line? I don’t remember it.

Kn*ckers the line is from right after Elizabeth falls and they cut to Jack Sparrow telling the two guards about his adventures “…and then they made me their chief.” then plunk goes Elizabeth in the water. Heh, it’s a great throwaway. Almost as great as Jack trying to blow Will’s hat feather out of his face at the end confrontation.

Yeah, something funny about that scene. Jack says to the guards, “Will you be saving her?” But how did he know it was a woman? His back was turned when she hit the water.

Well, he is Jack Sparrow. I’m sure he can recognize a petticoat from any angle or distance.

I know I mentioned this, but I’m not going to be pretentious enough to say my comment was the one you saw.

OpalCat, I’m sorry I didn’t get here earlier with this praise, but: WOW! I’ve seen this five times and the thought never crossed my mind. The more I think about it (and with Dopers like you, it’s hard to put the thoughts down–so many new theories) the smarter I see Jack as. I knew he was brilliant, I just wasn’t sure how brilliant!

I think this is the best place to share this:
a link to a satire page with article “Johnny Depp to Save every sinking film” - actually pretty funny stuff we pirate lovers can appreciate.

Hahahah! That was great! Thanks for posting that link.

I’ve got a question about Will at the end: He’s in the red cape and Musketeer feather hat, and, when Norrington sees him from the back, he says (I believe) “Hmm, the Navy.” Governor Swann later reveals that Will was given clemency. Are the two details related? Did Will join the Navy? Are the cape and hat the Navy uniform?

…OK, that was three questions. But if someone could explain that, I’d appreciate it.

I thought Norrington said “Hmm, interesting.”

The cape and hat are fashions from the English Civil War of the mid-17th century, which is interesting as the other costumes are 18th century… Will did not join the Navy.
