I don’t know why, but I’ve always loved these types of songs. Maybe it’s because my mother seemed to be the epitome of a “woman scorned” after her and my dad split up. I’m not sure. But I LOVE these type of songs. So, with that in mind, what are your top 5? I’m specifically referring to songs from the woman’s point of view, where she’s been screwed over. In no order, I think mine are:
“You Oughta Know” by Alainis Morissette. Yeah, I know this one’s kinda cliche and overplayed, and that it may or may not be heartfelt, but Jesus, it’s kinda hard to match the anger in that song.
Gunpowder and Lead by Miranda Lambert.
I’m goin’ home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight well now he’s got one
And he ain’t seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don’t that sound like a real man
I’m going to show him what a little girls are made of
Gunpowder and lead
The Carolina Chocolate Drops are a black string band–going back to a very old American tradition. And they do some more modern stuff–like Rhiannon Giddens playing fiddle & singing Hit 'Em Up Style.
Chrissie Hynde turns a Kinks tune into a Pissed Off Chick Song–Stop Your Sobbing.
Romeo Void Never Say Never (Hey, I already recommended this one today.)
This song has nothing to do with a romance, boyfriend, girlfriend, SO, etc. tho; it’s a fuck you to people who thought ill of her due to her time with The Runaways.
I actually had this on my list originally. I had to slide it to “honorable mention” status when I realized that I hadn’t placed Gloria Gaynor on the list.
That’s not really a pissed-off chick song. It’s the *prelude *to a pissed-off chick song : “You’ve got the reputation of being a do 'em and ditch 'em kinda guy, but I’m exactly that kind of girl too, let’s do it, see who hurts whom here”
