So far as you’ve become something of a target on this from your view, i’m sorry. And I return your respect in kind.
I would classify several of your posts and words as vitriolic diatribe, too, however. And i’d point out that it’s only a few people who’ve returned to say exactly the same point - for the most part, those people in opposition to this rule have only posted once or twice. Lots of people posting one bad thing compared to one person posting lots of bad things isn’t a good comparison in terms of rightness of behaviour. And, still, within this very post, you’ve continued to use needless unpleasantries (groupthink is one word, by the way ;)). That your kind of incivility and abuse is not affected by these new rules does not mean, to me, that it is superior to those forms which are. And even if people were being worse than you, that *still *doesn’t mean you’re right in responding to it with like. Especially if you call for self-control and adult behaviour whilst not embodying it yourself.
The simple point is this; someone can be abusive while keeping firmly within the new rules. Someone can swear while keeping firmly within the new rules. Someone can launch into a stream of inventive references to every vivid sexual act under the sun, and still be entirely within the new rules. They aren’t going to work. And they’ll be hell to try and moderate.
I have no idea why you think that. You’ve been heard. You’re on the side that currently has sway, and you’re not the person that needs to be swayed by the people who are in the lower position. You’re not adding a thing to the thread at this point other than word count.
I said exactly what I meant to say, no edits necessary. Though you’re right - you’re making your side look bad.
I’ve slogged my way through this thread, and have only one question (that has been asked, but not given much of an answer). If the ostensible reason for this rule is to raise the level of civility, how is A any more civil than B?
A: George Bush and Ann Coulter fucked each other’s parents in the past and spawned retarded cunt-copies of themselves in the future to lead this country into cuntdom!!
[aside] Well, it’s certainly coalesced my feelings and opinion on you, raindog. 2000 posts and you think you know these people well enough to castigate them repeatedly–I admire your chutzpah.
Words are separate from meaning? How do you manage that one? Do tell, O Wise and Knowing One. I eagerly await your sagacity. By all means, show us the error of our ways so that we can be ever grateful.
One reason there are so many posts here all saying the same thing is posters find this thread and feel compelled to comment, like every other thread here. Not all the posts are works of art in eloquence and pithiness, but all have this in common: they’re from people who care about this community. IMO, if you truly cared about this community, instead of admiring your own acuteness you might see the concern behind the words (as might Ed, but that ship sailed), and address that.
I don’t read this as whining or temper tantrums or [fill in with condescending dismissive references here-you seem to have a fair few of them]. I see this as people genuinely troubled by the course of action decided upon by TPTB. This isn’t about saying fuck your cunt of a mother with a battalion of dead dicks. I’m sorry you can’t see that.
ETA: I did not know that about Bush and Coulter. Ignorance fought! Teehee.
No, bullshit usually doesn’t work for me. Even your buddy Revenant Threshold is calling you out on this. But I’d be thrilled to hear your supposedly innocuous intention behind your accusation of groupthink. Wait, wait, before you reply - I was being sarcastic.
Not really, since the rules are so poorly defined. A mod doesn’t need to be careful or consistent or fair when the rules are undefinable; they can just ban or warn or ignore posters according to their mood and never be “wrong” because there is no “right”. Virtually anything someone says that even indirectly touches on another poster can be construed as a violation, or not as a violation and there’s no way anyone can show that particular ruling to be wrong. Or right, for that matter.
I’m not trying to be difficult (although I’m certainly nor trying to be compliant either) but it is far from clear that this can’t, or won’t be rescinded. In fact, this very thread has posited that they may affect a change through various means—some of which have been spelled out in detail. That’s the plan, right?
The opposing views have been heard 400 posts ago. I am on the ‘side holding sway’ and I wish to make sure it stays that way if I can help it. The point you’re making was made 10 pages, and 500 posts ago. With new derivations of the theme I have felt the need to add a counterpoint.
This is an exchange of ideas and opinions. You guys want to stop posting?; because you made your point a long time ago.
OTOH, if you’re suggesting you run the field while I sit on the bench, I say nope.
Revenant Threshold is not my buddy. he’s some guy (?) who posts on a message board. It’s been my experience that he’s bright, articulate and reasonable to debate or argue with.
All the same, he disagrees with me a good deal of the time, a clear indication that he is severely misguided, and quite possibly troubled.
Not that I expect Ed to listen, or care - and maybe I’m coming too late to the party, but RULE #2 SUCKS!!!
I don’t post there, given that I am likely to be too thin skinned, but I LOVE reading the Pit, and often read good posts to my husband to share the amusement. Sometimes, a well placed “fuck you” is the only appropriate response.
Yet another reason why I’m glad I didn’t pony up my renewal this year, and that I have AdBlock Plus on my home computer.
Gee, this is almost like talking to my ex-husband. I get more and more pissed, and he just ignores me.
It isn’t to raise the level of civility, ostensibly or any other way. Ed simply doesn’t want posters cursing at each other. That’s all there is to it, and he’s said so several times. In my opinion much of the confusion could be dispelled by changing the wording in the Pit’s new stickie to reflect that instead of “No abusive remarks directed at other posters”. This rule is followed immediately by his saying that obscenities and vulgarities are what he’s talking about, but many of the board’s posters still seem to think they aren’t supposed to insult each other or that an effort is being made to raise the tone of the Pit.
I really do have to bow out now. I mean it this time. I swear.
Ed, keep the faith. Just remember that Truman and Churchill were quite unpopular in their time. And just look at them now. Lions, both of them.
Even George Bush, …cough…
Anyways, in parting, I suspect that there is a large significant silent minority that feels the same way I do (not to mention those who posted to that effect) who simply don’t want to wade into this sawmill.
No worries. Stopping posting just because you said you would would take almost an overabundance of integrity. While I can think of a few different reasons to pit you, it would never cross my mind to pit you for that.
Third time. Let’s see if I called it.
Surely I’ve read worse arguments here. Just can’t think of them at the moment.
Truman and Churchill weren’t suffering from single-digit approval. You want historical figures who suffered single-digit approval, try Ed Gein.
Not that they’re Eds of a feather. Just sayin, your point sucks ass.
Ed–One of the reasons many of us are reacting so badly to your “relax and leave it to me” attitude is that we simply do not trust your judgement any more.
This whole “rule #2” business is one example of why.
There may be room for disagreement on whether Rule#2 is reasonable and/or enforceable, but there is no room for disagreement on the latter issue.
Even if Lizard did have a time machine, I really doubt he’d use it to go a few days into the future and read About This Message Board just to make sure that there wouldn’t be any new rules that he might be retroactively violating.
I would actually be ok with that because asshat is just so, so tired at this point. And if I’m reading the rules right it’s ok as long as it’s not directed at another poster. Which makes it pretty much moot anyway.
