You’ve never heard people say that before around here? “I’m getting TONS of e-mails/PMs supporting my position-they just don’t want to post here and say it!”
Or am I being whooshed?
She already did in her quote of raindog.
“I have TONS of people supporting me, they just don’t want to say anything!” = “I suspect that there is a large significant silent minority that feels the same way I do”
What part of this is confusing?
My curiosity has led me to set up an off-board poll that only board members can vote in. Let me know what you think of Rule #2 at http://newpitrules.ignorelist.com/
I don’t have a results page up, but it wouldn’t be very interesting until a lot of people vote anyway, so I’ll set it up tomorrow or something.
Wow, that is some fucked-up shit right there.
I get the impression that Ed is now sitting there and doing a Search for “cunt.”
Every 300 seconds.
I think you’re joking but I don’t believe Ed and the mods are restricted to the 300 second search.
Too complicated to register the vote – just put me down for “I disagree with it strongly and think it’s a mistake”
You are correct.
Well, my friend (I use that term in the most creative fashion and with the sincerity of a John McCain), if this is what you have been hearing, you need to clean your ears out. This is a ridiculous oversimplification of what some very respected posters have been arguing. Quite disappointing for someone who purports to fight ignorance.
There are two reasons why strong language in the Pit is appropriate. First, there is a legitimate reason to have a forum where people can blow off some steam without having to censor themselves to the degree that they must in other forums and in “real life.” This is to the benefit of other forums.
This post by storyteller0910 describes the other reason:
Pretending that writing like some freshman who just discovered a thesaurus is somehow preferable to simple, direct communication is childish and not the least bit amusing. As E-Sabbath pointed out earlier, even the Marquess of Queensbury understood the value of a direct, well-place insult.
Shame on you. My three year old niece behaves like that when she wants to arbitrarily change the rules of a game we’re playing. Pick up our marbles and go home? This can’t be the argument of someone who claims to want to fight ignorance. Can it?
As to your dubious financial motive, why don’t we talk about another business concept? Bait and switch. Can I get a refund? I purchased a product, which included the Pit with its previous rules, and now you have ensured that it can’t deliver.
I’m a programmer, not a data entry clerk. All you have to do is type one word into a post and give the url to it. Sorry that’s too much work. I’m not going to bother hand-tallying votes.
Ditto that. The new rule is stupid.
I’d like to follow up a little on these earlier suggestions I made.
I am not trying to be the leader of some new movement or something. In fact, over the last few hours, as I thought more about these ideas, the more I worried that I might be expected to “rally the troops”, as it were, and lead some sort of “charge”.
I say “worried” not because I have changed my mind about the preposterousness of this new policy (specifically the dreaded Rule No. 2)-- I haven’t. I still think this is an issue that is important–and far more important than simply enjoying the liberty to call someone a ‘cunt’ in the Pit. No, I became worried because I don’t believe I have the cache here on the SDMB to lead a boycott or some other type of protest. Most people who’ve posted to this thread have probably never even heard of me before, and if they have, they at best would describe me with a lilting “meh”…
I only wanted to suggest that if it comes to it, this thing is worth a fight. A fight to the death (banning) if need be. I won’t go into the reasons why because:
-
I think it is rather apparent that this is far more involved than simply telling people not to “abuse” one another in the Pit.
-
People far more eloquent that I have already filled 12 pages with near unanimous outrage over this new, VERY bad policy. Re-read them at your leisure–you are bound to find some wordsmith who was able to present the crux of the matter in a way that speaks to you. I daresay even **Ed Zotti **has been moved to some degree but feels it is too soon to admit his rather enormous mistake.
If we are to get the Board that we knew and loved back it is going to take the efforts of Members (ex-mods, even??) with far more stature here than I possess. However, I am completely behind whatever it would take to bring back the Pit. I am quite willing to be banned in pursuit of that goal mostly because, if this thing doesn’t get put back exactly as is was before (no pussy-footing around with temporary half-measures here–don’t fall for that smoke-and-mirrors crap!) then I honesty don’t want to come here anymore anyway.
I only hope that there are enough “big-wigs” here who feel strongly enough about this to fight for it. Reading over the last 12 pages, it certainly seems like there is more than enough genuine outrage, but as someone else pointed out upthread, if we are going to do this, then we must be fully prepared and willing to accept the consequences without batting an eye. We also must be fully equipped–that means having the STRONG and unwavering support of a LOT of members, particularly the long-established and well-respected ones.
Nope. I cannot be any sort of leader–just a foot-soldier–but I hope the necessary people can step forward if need be (I say “if need be” because if CERTAIN people would step forward, end this bullshit, and put things back the way they were then we could all just forget about this and enjoy the Board that we all used to love.)
Anyone who wants to may now step forward and make fun of me–abuse me (using the correct code words)-- call me sentimental, say I over-react, whatever. Call me out however you want to, just don’t forget that I’m not the only one who is very worried about the future of the SDMB and whether it will be worth the time of anyone interesting to come and post here anymore.
How much revenue does advertising directed at seven-year-olds or their intellectual equivalent bring in?
Commence.
Done and done.

You’re right. Sorry. I misread.
OK I’ll give it a shot.
Well that didn’t work. I wasn’t kidding about it being too complicated. Feel free to call me stupid, if that’s allowed any more.
So one more time, tis time with feeling. SNUgGLypuPpY
And try again SNUgGLypuPpY
Got it. My problem was that I was entering the thread URL rather than the post URL.
It’s okay. It’s happened in the past, though-and I believe there was a rule about it!
It’d be impossible to search for, though-no exact term, and too small, too common words. Dammit.
