Pit rules have been revised

Really?

If it’s so clear to you, perhaps you can clear this up for me, then.

On page 2 of this thread, Ed was asked whether the following would be considered abusive, and therefore a violation of the new rule:

“Go to hell, Giraffe, you asshole.”

His reply was that, offhand, yes it would be abusive.

Not very long after that, one Doper called another “you ignorant asshole” in a Pit thread. When asked for a ruling, Ed’s reply was, “Not a problem.”

Maybe you can explain to me why calling someone as asshole is abusive, but calling them an ignorant asshole is not.

How about quoting a poster, and then adding this youtube clip without further comment?

Yes, it’s Buffet

Because this place exists to fight ignorance. . . .

I suspect it’s the “go to hell” part rather than the “asshole” part. But I can’t, personally, see that as abusive at all. Then again, I’m not Ed.

I think this change like many of the others will cause people to bitch and moan for a while, but I think as long as everyone continues the adage of “don’t be a jerk” I don’t think things are going to change drastically. If you were calling people cunts and assholes or any other derogatory name you may have been being a jerk, so the new rule really is not going to effect you that much. You would have been warned in either case
SnuGGLypUPPy

No, you would NOT have been “warned in either case.” At least not in the Pit. That was never part of the “don’t be a jerk” rule. At least, up until NOW it wasn’t.

Another thing that gets me about the whole “adults don’t swear” bullshit-tell me, where did YOU learn to swear? Because I learned from when I was a mere child of 2 or 3, watching my father put stuff together. Except for words like “fuck.” THAT I learned from my grandmother. She was a very devout Catholic-but she had a mouth that would make a Teamster blush.

I guess though, she wasn’t an “adult.”

What’s confusing me is why after years of not really being involved in the day to day operation of this board Ed feels the need to come in and be The Man[sup]TM[/sup] all of a sudden. Reminds me of a restaurant I liked…until the owner thought he should take a hand in the kitchen. Closed within a year. If the cooks know what they are doing and the customers are happy don’t mess with it.

Chicago Reader was bought by Creative Loafing. New boss, change in behavior… hmmm…

See why this is a problem, HoboStew?

I don’t think people are being stubborn or obtuse. They are genuinely asking for clarification.

I’m not a frequent poster to the Pit, but I do read it and occasionally get into a thread. Most of it is harmless fun to me, and if another user and I snipe back and forth for a few posts, I can take it. I’ve started a few pit threads, but never one about another poster. I believe my first one was titled Phil Mickelson = Saggy Man Breasts, and I believe I was right in Pitting that sorry bastard. No harm done.

Here is more clarification I would like. The use of the word “fag” or “cocksucker” (and the female equivalent). Both words that to me are not offensive, but to others on this board could be considered hate speech. I don’t know the sexual orientation of every poster, but if someone called me a “whiney fag” in my Phil Mickelson = Saggy Man Breast thread, I would have laughed, not only because it would be funny, but perhaps the other poster would question my sexuality for noticing another man’s jiggling breasts.

When Jeff Spicolli said “Those guys are fags!” in FTARH, I don’t think anyone got upset, straight or gay, because of the context of the scene. But you cannot read tone in text. Therefore you must rebuke the use of “cunt” because… we’ll I still don’t understand. It’s now the universal insult. It must make the reader curl up in the fetal position, unable to recover until starvation takes them out?

That’s why I think the Pit should be left as is. If it’s necessary to keep vulgarity out of the subject lines, OK. But the Pit is a unique place on this board that keeps the other forums for the most part clean of any major in-thread blowups. Taking it to the pit is a great option to have. Watering it down serves no purpose.

If it’s the occasional google search you are worried about, make it invisible to everyone except registered posters.

And if you are worried about the mods, admins, or anyone else associated with the boards, perhaps as Oakminster suggests, getting thicker-skinned mods (who can dish it out as well as take it) is the best way to go.

Well, since Ed really isn’t speaking for himself, feel free to take a shot. At least you would be trying; Ed seems uninterested in explaining himself. A disturbing pattern has emerged on this board… Policy, rule changes, mod actions etc., are handed down, the confusion, complaints, questions, etc., come in, and dead silence from the PTB is the result.

You could well be right about the “go to hell” part.

But, if that is Ed’s reasoning in that incident, it serves as further proof of how obtuse and arbitrary this whole new rule is.

I can hardly imagine anyone who, if asked, would say that “Go to hell” is abusive whereas “You’re an asshole” is not.

To quote Bart Simpson, “Dad, your half-assed underparenting was a lot better than your half-assed overparenting.”

Distraction from having to deal with a job that may disappear.

I could not come up with a better quote to save my life. Bravo!

Affect. You’re wrong, but at least you can use the right word.

Well then Ed, FUCK OFF and adios, DICKHEAD!

Go ahead and ban me, ten years is enough.

I still think you are only doing this at the behest of your corporate masters.

Good luck with your board, dude.

Now it’s getting interesting! Klaatu is my hero!

Why not keep the Pit the way it was, but only make it visible to logged-in members?
ETA: Members meaning guests too, of course.

My feeling is that Rule #2 was generally covered by the “Don’t be a jerk” rule already. If someone is being repeatedly abusive to the point of accruing warnings, then they’re a jerk and will be dealt with accordingly. There’s absolutely no need to screw with this. And to those who think I just want to curse at people, nope. That’s not it. It’s exactly the same as being pro-choice even though I don’t intend to have an abortion, or being pro gun rights even though I don’t own a gun.

(Also, snUGGlyPuppy.)

Being abusive in the Pit was always legal. It’s the point of the forum, after all.

This rule is fucking stupid.

ETA: Actually, what Klaatu said. Ed is trashing this board.

You know, I’ve always loved animals. Many of them taste quite good!

I’ve heard, though, that in some places, they actually serve deep-fried sNUGGlYpUPpY

Ugh. I doubt it’s something I’d ever condone or eat personally, but a vague and inconsistently enforced rule against it is simply not a good idea. One man’s meat, and all that…
