Pit rules have been revised

While I disagreed with what you said, What Exit?, your post was fine. I threw in the “mod note” because several people in this thread have suggested they were confused as to when a mod was speaking as staff and when as a poster; I thought I’d make it clear right away which hat I was donning.

In the future I’d like all ATMB threads to remain more civil than what this thread has seen, but I wasn’t holding up any post as a specific. So, no, you were in no danger of being warned.

Thank you for the clarification.

Since no-one has mentioned it yet, i thought i’d note that the new proposed language restrictions have been posted.

  1. “Paying to” means exactly that: Paying so that you can do something. The something is post. Which you don’t pay to do any more here. Posting is free. That’s exactly what I said. It’s also what I clarified I had said. If you wish to continue misconstruing my meaning to get your jollies over being upset with me, feel free, but it’s not helping your case any.

  2. I didn’t impugn your motives. I simply asserted that your statement that the fact you pay to post affects to some degree your expectations about the restrictions on what you can say in a post was based upon a false premise: the claim that you are paying for the privilege of posting. It was a minor quibble, but one which highlighted one important point in this saga: when we DID pay for the privilege of posting here, one might well have an expectation that the rules on what could be said wouldn’t change suddenly, or be overly restrictive. Now that anyone is free to register and post, you cannot claim that there is some quid pro quo inherent in having paid to post here.

  3. The bit about the ads was an ad-in on my part to be sure that some pedantic person didn’t point out that for many here, ads aren’t even an issue. It was done as an “ETA” because in a thread this volitile, if you don’t do that, it can justifiably confuse someone who already saw your original posting.

Frankly, some people seem to be quite quick to be vituperative whenever someone offers any resistance to this outpouring of resistance to the new Pit rule. That’s part of the change to the tone of this place that is so worrying; it wasn’t how I remember the Board back in the day. Of course, who knows, maybe I’m just seeing the Board version 2000 through rose tinted glasses… <shrug>

And… they continue to show Ed’s unique style as a moderator.
“Go fuck yourself” is the same as “Suck my dick”?
I don’t even pretend to understand that one.

They’re both gasp sexual, don’tcha know… Yeah, I got nothing either.

Which is a statement of intent, implying motive. Jeez; good thing you’re not a lawyer.

ETA: If, as you claim, you don’t intend to imply or presume motive, then use different phrasing.

Wow, still? Folks, the horse is decomposing. Alternatives have been posted. Vote with your keyboard. If you really truly can’t handle these new rules, go somewhere else.

This message board will never make any decent money for whoever owns it. It is too general.
Some special interest boards make a little money because their membership might focus on one particular widget, and the board can target that.

Not the SDMB. Not to mention, nobody buys shit from the ads, and most people block them anyway. Click thrus don’t generate shit anymore, as Ed said.

I have never bought anything as a result of an ad on this board, much less anywhere on the fucking net and I am not the only one.

Ed knows this, CL knows this and we all know this.

I would rather see this board go down in one massive glorious trainwreck than being slowly strangled from within.

This board has had a good, long run. Fuck it. Turn the page.

I just don’t see how a vibrant, friendly, intelligent community like the SMDB has become can survive if we can’t viciously insult the stupid assholes who populate it.

::clap::clap::clap::

Let’s not forget about the necessity to brutally verbally assault the mods who make this place a paradise in cyberspace.

I always felt that people would use the the pit to be a jerk to posters that were commenting on generic complaints, which kind of bummed me out when I was the recipient. But, that’s the risk of the pit and I could live with it.

Well, I can’t figure out the rules nor the reasoning behind it, so I’ll continue to post in my normal fashion and if I get banned, it will be a bummer. I rarely call people cunt, but it’s too much work to worry about it, and I’ll let chips fall wherever they drop. I do however tell people to fuck off all the time, and I doubt that I can go for very long without typing it.

Wow, I haven’t signed on here in 5 years, though I’ve occasionally peeked in anonymously. I doubt anyone remembers me now.

I read up to page 11 of this thread in the last 3 days, and finally got fed up when I realized that my rate of reading was soon to be overtaken by the rate of posting in this thread, so forgive me if this point was raised already - it’s been described by example a couple of times, but not explicitly pointed out AFAIK:

Just because an OP starts with profanity doesn’t mean something good can’t come out of it. Creativity can be inspired by another person’s invective, and camaraderie from commiseration.

I wish I’d saved up all the things I agreed with while reading this thread: mostly the “chilling effect” (I’m Asian, we know about totalitarian rule) and the fact that just knowing you have the safety valve, even if it’s never actually used, is of great benefit to one’s mindset. Having to stop and think and interrupt oneself all the time blocks up the flow of passion and stifles emotion (again, Asian experience speaking; self-censorship is wonderful in polite society, but for God’s sake you’ve got to have somewhere to let it out or else drown in your own bullshit). The collective intelligence and decency of this place is astounding, compared to most other boards - why isn’t it allowed to show itself to its fullest anymore?

I don’t know what value my input might be, seeing as I’m not an active member here anymore, but this pulled me out of lurking - shouldn’t that count for something?
