Pitting SDMB medical advice

In this thread discussing a woman with herpes having unprotected sex, three doctors have chimed in. Here are the quotes:

Now that is the extent of the contributions by medical doctors so far, but I am alarmed by Jackmannii’s reference to DrDeth’s advice as “dead wrong and dangerous”.

I’ve always understood professionals avoid attacking each other publicly unless it is very serious. I had accepted DrDeths advice and opinion until Jackmannii’s negative comment. My initial reaction was let’s here from Qadgop but now I’m not so sure. I might just get more confused.

Have these doctors been vetted by the administration? I don’t think so. I seem to recall that we have a rule against seeking medical advice. Perhaps everyone is best served by having a rule against dispensing medical advice by self acknowledged doctors.

I do not think you are going to like the direction that I suspect this thread is going to go.
I thought they were giving personal opinion as posters not dispensing medical advice.
I suspect persons more eloquent than I are going to expand on this. I could be wrong. Its lust my opinion not medical advice.

Why do you care? Are there just not enough rules in your life?

First of all, I don’t see how having “Dr.” in one’s username is equivalent to claiming one is a medical doctor. It could be a reference to admiring a comic book villain or, worse, having a PhD.

Second of all, there’s a big difference between giving an individual medical advice and having a factual debate about health issues. It would be ridiculous to ban discussions about anything pertaining to medicine or health.

Third of all, where on earth did you get the idea that there’s some code among professionals that they don’t contradict each other in public? That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. Science and medicine are inherently public and critical processes.

Fourth of all, anyone who makes medical decisions based on Internet message board discussions is a total retard.

Jesus, grienspace. The “medical advice” thing hardly enters into it here.

Talking in a general way about the transmission routes and symptoms of a particular disease isn’t the same as diagnosing someone over a message board and suggesting a course of action.

So it’s going to be that way, eh? Bring it on, hater!

Woa, settle down big fella, you better be carefull. I seem to remember somebody spazed out and went all ninja on Dex’s ass for saying the exact same thing?

Jesus Larry, it was an an M.D. that characterized DrDeth’s first post as medical advice. Sheesh!

I didn’t say “total retard,” I wouldn’t use so crass a term. I think I said “stupid as shit.” Well, no, I probably didn’t say that either, it wasn’t in the Pit. I don’t recollect my exact words.

SDMB rules are pretty clear about giving (or accepting) professional advice – whether medical, legal, or any other.

I guess “wary” is a more reasonable term than “retard.”

Not everything in medicine is black and white. I talk with MDs who contradict one another fairly often. If it bothers you, I would suggest you take two…um, never mind.

I hardly see any advice being sought out or offered up in that thread. There are at least 2 doctors who have offered their opinion of the disease, and one possible doctor who has herpes who offers up his opinion.

I don’t see any of the 3 of them giving instructions or advice to a specific person asking for advice on what to do about their herpes infection. Seriously grienspace, chill out and stop playing little Jr. Mod, it’s really annoying and unnecessary.

Sam

DrDeth is not a physician.

Fair point. Please substitute the phrase “stupid as shit” for “total retard” in my last post.

Look Sam, it was an M.D. who said that "DrDeth’s post was “dead wrong and dangerous ADVICE”.

That sounds like lives are at stake here! That seems a lot more pitworthy to me than jokes in the pit.

Thanks for clearing that up. Since my concern was about “medical advice” and the alarming post was not by a doctor, I see no reason to continue and will request closing this thread.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I’m not a doctor, jackass, I’m named after a movie character’s testicle.

Regardless of the propriety of medical advice (which this was not, the OP never asked for any), my comment followed this ignorant hogwash (being then the second post in the thread):

Had you followed my link you would’ve realized that they don’t protect definitively against spreading herpes (it’s a condom, not a chastity belt, it has faults), they do reduce the risk of spread.

Jesus Christ, do you do these things just to stir shit up? Why the hell else would someone make a mountain out of a molehill like this? Chill the fuck out, recognize the difference between an abstract discussion and medical advice, and figure out that we have the right to discuss all sorts of things here, one of them being medical practices. Don’t try to stop the rest of us from having the discussions we want to have.

You’re exaggerating for effect, right? You’re not really stupid enough to think this is something where “lives are at stake”, are you? Right?

:: sigh ::
No, you’re probably are that stupid . . .

Lamest. Pitting. Ever.

A funny typo in a thread concerning herpes. :stuck_out_tongue:

Dooooh! Damn the funniest thing I’ve said in a long time, and its a typo.
