Pitting Shodan for stubborness

Shodan is a typical Trumpanzee, therefore I forgive his many sins.

I think more likely he thought, “Heh, this’ll rile 'em up”.

I love posts by Shodan, he’s not always right, though often I do agree with him, but he’s always funny. The OP on the other hand seems like a caring dude, but he posts so incessantly, that I feel at times like he’s taken over this whole fucking board.

Huh. That’s a new criticism for me. I’ll consider it.

 It’s a really gentle criticism, on the other hand at least you’re helping to keep this place alive and active.

I laughed.

I like Shodan, too.

Everyone that has been “specifically told ‘don’t touch a black woman’s hair’” please raise your (virtual) hands.

I’ve been around for over 4 decades and have never received this specific advice. Thankfully, I’ve never needed it.

Seriously, I had learned more generally to keep my hands to myself by kindergarten. I’d never seen a black person up close at that point, and no one had to tell me not to go poking at them when I did later. I was a bit jealous of the little black girls hair, as I had to sleep on curlers to get mine to do anything but hang limply or tangle up in a rat’s nest, but I didn’t realize theirs took just as much work to keep neat.

If the thread has no tangent to politics, **Shodan **is alright. Any politics involved? He’s rude, condescending, and contemptible. All would be forgiven if he wasn’t downright stupid on top of it. Unfortunately for Shodan, 90% of the Dope involves politics in some form.

I concur with this. There’s room for honest debate over liberal versus conservative values, but I rarely see this from Shodan.

What’s next, pitting snakes for slitheriness?

Well, there is another thread Pitting Bricker for blather.

Regards,
Sssshodan

To be honest, it is something I’ve come across, but in a more general sense, since I went to an all boys school. I mean, the rule should obviously be, don’t touch anyone’s hair (without permission).

I like Shodan for the same reason I have come to like Bricker. They refuse to be shouted down and insulted into silence.

Not that I disagree… but is there any Doper who has been “shouted down and insulted into silence”? Or do you just mean Dopers who have left?

This is another one that I think breaks down along political or party lines. I don’t have an issue with Shodan, personally (nor his tag line which seems to drive folks around here wild), though I do wish he’d get back to posting like he did years ago, when he seemed to put a lot more into his posts. I think I can see why he doesn’t post like that anymore…sort of why we don’t see much of Sam Stone anymore. I used to rank Shodan up with some of the better conservative posters on this board, but good conservative posters are few and far between now around here.

I do think the OP was right on this one, however. Was a good and justified pitting, IMHO FWIW.

I’ve seen several posters who have said that they don’t or no longer comment in political threads because they find the heated reactions to alternative viewpoints unpleasant. This sort of thing is not to everyone’s taste.

When I joined this board in 2003, it was because a startlingly wide array of topics were discussed and debated. There were many interesting people here who had many different points of view. Board culture now seems to be mainly centered around looking for things over which to be offended and people to scold. People whose interest doesn’t center around those things have gone away. Shodan and Bricker, whether or not I agree with their politics, keep this place from devolving into nothing but an endless circle jerk of outrage and superiority.

When a reasoned position someone holds leads to implied (or hell, directly stated) connotations of racism, fascism, murder, cruelty, etc etc, and you hear that day after day, week after week or year after year, with your posts being viciously attacked by the boards more loony lefty types while being hotly debated by just about everyone else, it’s easy to see why a lot of the more conservative posters are either knee-jerk posters who lash back and look for every instance of liberal hypocrisy to attack or have just given up at this point. It’s difficult to be in a situation where a large majority are against every political position you hold and you have to justify every statement by 20 people asking you for cites to back up what you are saying, all the while they get free passes on stuff that the majority of the board just accepts and thus requires no cite…or that you have 20 people willing to go out and look for a cite while you basically have to do all the leg work on your side each time.
