As a huge Pixies fan who never had an opportunity to see them play this is the greatest news I have ever heard!!!
Mrs. Punk has already agreed that since they probably won’t come anywhere near Florida (nobody ever does) we will be taking a road trip. Hopefully to more than one show.
I am giddy like a child who ate a whole bag of sugar.
I guess I’m too much of a pessimist; my first reaction was “how the hell am I going to be able to get tickets? They’re going to be outrageously expensive and sell out in minutes.”
But I would love to see her perform. Err, I mean, them. The whole band. When I went to school in Athens (GA) they were playing at the GA Theater for like $30 a ticket or so, and I actually passed on the concert. I’d bought Doolittle because of “Here Comes Your Man” and then was upset that the rest of the album didn’t sound anything like that at all; it was all just incomprehensible screaming. It wasn’t until a couple of years later, when they’d already broken up, that I wised up. D’oh!
SolGrundy, I did the same thing; I had a chance to see them in '89 in Atlanta, and didn’t go. The only song I’d heard was “Hey,” from Doolittle, and, being a pseudo-hippie wannabe, I hated it. It wasn’t until '95 or so that I finally caught on, and now I’d say they’re probably my favorite band ever.
Tickets will sell out fast. Plus, much as I hate to confront this deep, dark fear, we have to admit there’s the possibility of this being a Rolling Stones “Steel Wheels” kind of thing.
Not to throw water on your various dances of ectasy, Billboard has this story as well, but with a more one might say pessemistic tone. "The mamager of Frank Black told Billboard.com, ‘I have recieved an offer for The Pixies to perform in April. That said, over the past 10 years I have recieved dozens of offers for The Pixies.’"
Well, Doolittle was probably their worst album, and certainly not the one I’d use to introduce anybody to the Pixies. Trompe de la Monde or Bossanova are much more accessible albums.
Really? Doolittle is the first album I’d choose to introduce someone to the Pixies. “Here Comes Your Man,” “Wave of Mutilation”… Well, to each his (or her) own. I guess I just enjoy incomprehensible screaming.
Anyway, allow me to add a resounding “WOOT!” if this news is definite. I’d love to see the Pixies. Too bad they probably wouldn’t come anywhere near here. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for a New Orleans date.
You can find out more about them here. Their footprints are all over what we presently (unfortunately?) refer to as “alternative rock.” “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was originally titled “Pixies Song,” although Butch Vig’s production sucked out any inkling of the relation between the two.
Did you see Fight Club? The last song played as the buildings explode is “Where is My Mind?” by the Pixies. That’s probably the most widespread use they’ve seen.
Doolittle had a ton of great songs, but the production was too flat. Nothing will ever compare to the opening drumbeats of the Steve Albini-recorded Surfer Rosa, the ONLY Pixies album, as far as I’m concerned.
These words physically hurt me! The Pixies are the greatest indie rock band off all time. 'nuff said.
As far as best the best Pixies album it’s impossible to decide. I completely disagree that Doolittle is their worst!!! In fact it’s an incredibly cool album. I can’t believe someone would list it as being worse than Trompe Le Monde but to each his own.
IMHO the albums from best to worst are as follows (does not include post break-up Cd’s)
Surfer Rosa
Come on Pilgrim
Doolittle
Bossanova
Trompe Le monde
As far as accesibility… Doolittle would be a great starting point.
Doolittle’s my favorite, too. I’d rank the albums (if we include B-sides collection and Come on Pilgrim as albums) Doolittle - Surfer - B-Sides - Trompe - Pilgrim - Bossanova. (Bossanova has Velouria, though, which is one of their best songs IMHO.)
I’d love to see the Pixies, but they probably aren’t going to tour Finland. Sigh. And if they are going to tour Finland, with my luck I’ll be doing my army service.
Bossanova (I rank this as one of the best albums of the 90’s)
Trompe Le Monde
They should do a tour of Scandinavia Kantalooppi, that would just be the bees knees.
Best song? Caribou from Come On Pilgrim.
Best b-side? Manta Ray.
As many have pointed out before me: Black Francis screams at the end of Tame is without peers in the history of rock, with maybe the exception of Bob Mould shredding his larynx in the final minute of Husker Du’s cover of Eight Miles High.
