Pizza: Round or Square?

The ultimate question… Which way do you swing?

I really don’t care, it’s the taste that matters.

Round-ish. Home made pizza rarely comes out perfectly round.

I like round pizza because I like crust. I hate those internal pieces of a square pizza that are crustless and goopy.

But you have to choose, cuz I’m on the phone right now… What do you want?

Yes. Round is the perfect shape for a pizza, since all slices have a crust, which acts as a natural handle, and are awesome triangles of deliciousness so your first bite begins simply at the point, and you work your way toward a wonderful arc of crusty, saucy yumminess.

I used to write for menus.

Pizza, by definition (at least my definition) is round.

It is called a pizza pie, not pizza… cake.

Round, but cut into squares in a grid pattern. Yes, I’m from Chicago.

Ah, you’re assuming a pie-cut pizza. As Tim R. Mortiss indicates, many areas of the Midwest cut their pizzas in a “party cut,” which does contain many interior, crustless slices.

This is not really much of a poll for me, because it’s exceedingly rare for me to find anything but a round pizza. Sicilian and Italian-bakery-style pizzas are the only ones I’ve ever had this way, and those generally are thicker styles of pizza, which I don’t prefer anyway.

It’s not round or square; it’s the number of slices. Around here, up to eight is round; over eight is square. Otherwise, there’s no difference.

Round for sure. Square is for communists.

^. Ditto. This. As Tim Said. I agree. Etc.

Given that we tend to feed kids with the pizza, having square slices means I get to spread a single pie around more. The kids all want 2+ “pieces”, but I’ve learned they don’t really care as to how big the pieces are, just as long as they get two of them. It’s our own version of the Loaves and Fishes miracle, this time with Pizza.

Square on weekdays, round on Sundays.

I can’t believe I’m the one who had to post that joke.

Actually, I prefer round.

Round and radially cut. None of this “party cut” bullshit. Save that for the rubes in the Mid-West.

Round-ish. The best pizza anywhere is the stuff you get at Al Forno in Providence, RI. It’s sort of an irregular shape, although round enough that you can get end crust in every piece.

Growing up (New Jersey), quadrilateral pizza was always on the menu as “Sicilian.” I’m pretty sure I never had it, so am unsure if there was a difference other than the shape. My impression is that it was thicker, almost like a Chicago-style pie, but not as ridiculously thick.

Joe

So cmyk, you don’t like it Detroit-style? Buddy’s? Jet’s?

Buddy’s is okay. There’s one right down the street from me. But I will say, when I order from Jets, it has to be square. I can’t describe in words how Jet’s square 'za is one of the best foods ever conjured by man. And is heads and tails above their round.

As for chains, my faves are Hungry Howies, Jet’s, Little Caesars (I know, but it quenches some pizza craving in my lizard brain). Pizzapapolis is gooood too.

And what’s with this square-cut round pizza? That sounds like an abomination from satan.

As a resident of the only state in the US than can accurately be called mid-west, I can testify that anyone who tries the “party cut” here will be mercilessly (and rightfully) ridiculed. It’s not pizza if it’s not round and cut in wedges.

And though many will disagree, I’ll go one further and say it’s not pizza if there’s not at least one topping – and cheese is not a topping, it’s part of the base. Calling it a “cheese pizza” makes as must sense as calling an empty pie shell a “crust pie”.
