Perhaps I’m talking out of my ass, but good god, YOUR ass ain’t a goldmine. Can we say hypocrite? It’s okay for you to put down others for something you disagree with, yet they don’t have the same right?

I usually refrain from this kind of thing, but I had a choice: start a hijack in one or more Pit threads, or turn a non-Pit thread into a flamefest.

Never saw the thread. See, I don’t read MPSIMS a lot. Most of my posts are in GD and GQ. In
fact, I only saw this thread because another Doper notified me of it. If it was the same kind of
thing as this, then shame on those people, too. Please, please, please don’t think that you are so
special that I singled your thread out. Until this thread, I had no idea you even existed.

Translation: because I’m so wonderful, and I’m so great, and everyone is just sooooo beneath me!

BTW, threads like this one really do a lot to help enforce the reputation of the SDMB as a place
where smart folks hang out. Again, you should be brimming with pride.

I know for a fact that several of the people posting in the thread do not have girlfriends or
prospects, and as such, perhaps they would be wise to refrain from criticizing the dating criteria
of others.

Yes, I know pl is a long time poster here, and I’m not going to win any fans by doing this. In fact, I’ll probably generate alot of hate. You know what? Phil rubbed me wrong for a long time too. We even had a few very big altercations here in the Pit.
But then I decided to stop looking for reasons to hate him, and start reading his posts objectively. And I have found for every one “smug, self-righteous, condensending” statement, there are at least 5 wonderful, brilliant, intelligents posts that really make me think.
Like Gadarene says, he’s always like that, that’s why we love him.
And I pretty much agree with every word Phil said in the thread that prompted Guinastasia to start this thread. AFAIC he was 110% right.

I beg to differ, andros. It is Phil’s fault if you don’t take calling someone a loser in the best possible way. He repeatedly claimed they should keep their opinions to themselves if they aren’t in a relationship. How does being in a relationship make your opinions any more worthy than a single person’s? As I said in the thread in MPSIMS, I agreed with his message of not being jugmental, just not the delivery of his message.

And what’s this crap about he calls 'em as he sees 'em. Isn’t that exactly what these guys did in that thread? It’s ok for pldennison to call 'em as he sees 'em, but not for these guys? Then he says the difference is he can dish it out and take it. He admits he’s doing the exact same thing to these guys as they did to this Beth lady, but the difference is he admits it.

Guinny you seem to awfully alone here, and I don’t know how much help I’ll be to you, since for the most part I agree with pl’s sentiments in that thread. However I don’t think he gets a free pass to being a hypocritical ass to other people just cuz some people are used to it. We shouldn’t have to get used it. He should be civil and respectful of others’ feelings, or at least try.

Hey, Crunchy-THAT’S WHAT I’M SAYING. And btw, I don’t mind being alone-I’m quite used to it and often I prefer it that way-I can always have my own way then…

I don’t necessarily agree with the guy all the time, although there are times when I do. But, as I said-it is the WAY HE SAYS IT. And hey, I’ll admit the Beth thing was kinda of cruel, but that’s not to say that I didn’t agree with most of what was being said about her. But basically, Phil took the holier than thou attitude…and that’s one thing that always chaps my ass.

I don’t know if I’m overeacting, since I’m not devastated nor is smoke pouring out of my ears over this. (I’m kind of suffering from cabin fever right now, so bear with me.) It’s more like, yeesh, it’s starting to become annoying, and I’m venting. I actually feel a little bit better now, and don’t feel I have to keep harping on the guy with more stuff, only to try and explain myself.
But, then, I’m only “calling it 'em as I see 'em.” And fine, you like the guy, admit he gets on your nerves, but you like him nevertheless. I think we all feel that way about many people. However, I’m not one to keep my mouth shut when someone does get on my nerves.

I’m torn.

I laughed my ass off at Homer’s and Ender’s responses, yet at the same time I mostly agree with phil. Perhaps this whole thing is really a non-issue. I saw the responses to the want ad as being meant in humor only, and took it at such. And phil’s criticism of them as being a valid and on-point reminder that deep down, we really should not be judging the poor woman in question so harshly, or making assumptions about her.

So I guess I’m saying IMO both “sides” are right. We can take humor in her, um, “strange” personal ad, and can also feel some compassion for her as well. Yes?

Okay, so everybody admits that pldennison can be smug and condescending. That’s neato. Hell, he’s had some good points in other threads, and can be funny.

But as far as this thread is concerned, I’m gonna hop in the (admittedly small) boat with Crunchy and Guin by saying that there’s something a bit not right about bringing in unbased personal attacks into things. For one, it’s in MPSIMS. That’s one thing. For another, accusing everybody who was mad at Beth of being single, lifeless losers doesn’t help your point.

As Crunchy stated in the actual thread, obfusciatrist was doing a much better job of arguing the point that you were trying to make, because obfus didn’t feel the need to approach it hypocritically (hey, spelled it right this time), and therefore got some of his points across.

You’ve got the whole “smug” gimmick down, Phil. Kudos to you. Still, there are times when it just doesn’t help.
