I’m not usually critical of the mods. I do think they’re doing an awesome job, particularly during this time of crisis. However, I’m at a loss to understand why Hiyruu has not been removed from the boards.
A flagrant troll, Hiyruu has started threads here, here and here in which he blames the terrorist attacks of two days ago on a rap group, the Illuminati and UFOs, respectively. In the first thread referenced, he calls Coldfire a “dick head” and gets away with it.
I’d like to think that the SDMB staff would move quickly to ban anyone trolling on the subject of the terrorist attacks. As a longtime SDMB member, a New Yorker and an American, I am deeply offended, considering that while most NYC and DC Dopers are accounted for, there are many people on this board who have been, or will be, affected by the loss of a friend or loved one in this series of ongoing disasters.
I implore the moderators and administrators to make things right and get rid of this trolling asswipe immediately.
At the risk of playing the Devil’s advocate. Maybe this is Hiyruu’s way of trying to bring a little bit of humour (whether it’s funny or not is another matter) to a tragic situation. Everyone has different ways of dealing with stuff like this, and maybe this is just his, and maybe it’s done without ill-intent.
Hell, one might even argue that any attempt at causing a chuckle at this point is sorely needed. I’m not saying that to be callous. Quite the contrary. I just think that we’re all miserable enough, and maybe we can use a little smile here and there. Mind you, I didn’t think any of this was funny, but someone else might.
Zaphod, I recommend you re-read the first referenced thread. It’s obvious from his tone and manner that he wasn’t trying to be funny. When Coldfire called him on the carpet, Hiyruu called him a “dick head.” I don’t think he was trying to be humorous at all.
Well, he did apologize for his comment. That said, you’re right. It doesn’t look like much of an attempt at humour. However, I’m still willing to assume that his sense of humour might just be very different from mine, and that this makes it difficult for me to recognize his attempts at humour as such.
I guess I’m thinking along the lines of “let it be for now, but if he acts like this again, shitcan him.”
I didn’t actually see the two other threads when I commented on his post about the Coup album cover. And guess what - that story was actually legit. Yeah, he was crossing the line when he called me a dickhead. Hence the little note.
For now, he’s a posting member. But we’d like to see he learned something about board behaviour today.
I have to say that I don’t see anything inflammatory in the first two links (other than calling Coldie a dickhead).
In the first one, he links to an album cover. I had seen the exact same picture in a San Francisco Chronicle article hours earlier. He did not claim that the rap group did it, just that they had an album cover with a similar image.
The second link is another thing I have received several times through email. If he had made the post in the “strange coincidences” thread, then it would have gone without comment.
The third one is admittedly strange, though I wouldn’t say trollish. I haven’t seen any of the other posts by that person.
There’s really not much to wonder about. We do ban screen names when we decide that posters are out of line.
For the most part, these posters stay banned. The more lonely pathetic folk however, feel a need to post under different name, like AM/PM here. This is hardly a loophole, however since the returned posters, while under a different name, are immediately recognizable by their posting style. Combine that with a recurring family of IP addresses and we know what’s up.
Now we can, and have, banned access to the boards based on IP numbers. The problem is that some of these tools log in from IP ranges that legitimate posters also use. Rather than punish innocent bystanders, we prefer to leave access open and only ban the offending screen names. We are also more and more liekly to delete the posts of these morons, since their entire raison d’etre is to see their name in lights. That and they generally have nothing useful to say, save for knee-jerk mod whining.
The irony is that the only reason these pathetic puppets can access the boards to complain about how intolerant the mods are is a consequence of our refusal to block an entire access portal because of a few lonely whiners.
Until they get a life, keeping the board free of these sad sacks is part of our duty. And we thank the rest of you for your patience.
Thanks for explaining. I’d forgotten about the IP address thing. I’d always wondered, but then I’d also thought that maybe it was a topic that the mods would prefer was left undiscussed, since there was no point in giving people ideas. So I’d never raised it.
Well, here’s a big hug for the mods for your cool thinking and hard work, especially for your being so tolerant of my outbursts of apoplectic rage, fortunately now subsided.
And a quick pat on the ass for Coldfire. He’s yummy!
