I don’t search a lot, but every time I do something like this happens. I decide to start a thread on something, but first I want to see if there’s already a similar thread. So, for instance, I type in “bulow” figuring that is the unique word (obviously I use a different unique word for every search), hit the enter, and nothing happens. Nothing…happens…at all. So I hit it again and get a message like: “You must wait another 189 seconds to do another search.” It seems completely arbitrary. If I have to wait 300 seconds between searches if you actually FOUND something, or if a search was actually performed.
Really I think there’s a glitch here. In the above case, which is quite recent, I logged in, immediately performed the search–performed no other searches first–and got told I had to wait another 150 seconds. WTF? I hit enter, waited approximately 10 seconds (290…289…288) and then hit it again. And got 150?
I have never had issues with the search engine, other than the minor annoyance of having to wait if my original search parameters weren’t properly thought out.
Searching has always been blamed for the Server crashes and slowdowns. I maintain that this is almost certainly wrong, and it’s something else entirely (maybe connected tangentially with searching, but not requiring this stupid delay to fix it).
In any case, they are apparently going to replace it with a Google search anyway, so it will be a very different situation then.
Though I’m not sure if searching on a username will work the same.

Even more frustrating is when I do a search, get a “No, you have to sit around for five minutes with your thumb up your ass now because you just did a search” (when I haven’'t) so I hit the back button, thinking that will take me to the results for the search I supposedly just did and it takes me instead to the page I was on before I “searched.”
I’m normally not terribly peeved by these things, but recently I tried searching for something, got an error, waited five minutes, and got another error. That did warrant some hands thrown up in frustration.
I just wish that a major overhaul of the search engine could be seen as a high priority. Because of the inordinately long delay and because of its complete inability to search on complete phrases, it’s next to useless, and, as has been pointed out in a previous thread, always has been. So it’s not as if this is a new issue, and could, surely, have been tackled any time in the past decade.
But in fairness, DSYoungEsq, for one, says he has no issues with it, so maybe it’s just me.
I do, but that isn’t what I’m discussing. When I haven’t done a search of any kind in hours, it sometimes occurs that I do a search and it tells me that I’ve just searched, and all the backbuttoning and forwardbuttoning in the world won’t show the search I supposedly just did.

But that’s just it: it doesn’t support parameters, like Boolean things. It searches on what you put in that box - you can’t set parameters. (Apart, obviously, from dates and forums and things.)
It used to be about 2 minutes, I think, then they went to 5 minutes. Most boards have some wait time, but nowhere near such a ridiculous length as this one.
I have the same complaint!
I use searches while following threads, posters, past questions, etc… If the search works, I get the list and read through, using the back button to return to the list, but for some reason it tells me I have to wait to do a new search. .
Sometimes it tells me I have to wait even before I’ve done a search!?
I’ve noticed that sometimes using the back button just refreshes the advertising, so I have to double click to get back to the previous page, then I have to wait again?!
Agreed. If you can’t search effectively, how the hell can you “fight ignorance.” Part of what makes this place so great is all the archived info we now have at our fingertips. Or would have, rather, if we didn’t have to wait five friggin minutes between searches.
God Damn. Search is worse than ever. Why haven’t I learned to never waste time trying to search? Five minutes between failed searches is ridiculous too. Argggg! Where’s the beat head against the wall smiley?
