Please, help me ease the boredom that has become my life...

Ok. Heres the thing.

I’m horribly, utterly bored. None of my freinds are home. Noone has posted anything new on LJ. I haven’t found a thread on sdmb that interests me yet(I’m sorry, don’t hate me…) and Theres absolutely no0thing on television that a person my age would even think about watching(cept te rap music videos on Muchmusic… but NO. Gross.)

So, I am at a loss.

Please, direct me to some funny sites. Cartoons, whatevr. Anything short of porn. The more morbid, the better. Maybe stuff like Joecartoon.com… that sorta thing. Penny-arcade is out cuz I’m already up-to-date on that, So is rpg-worldcomics, and so is nuklearpower.

Help me, I beseech you… before I end up doing something stupid and start browsing makeup sights or something…

Bordom sucks.

If you don’t mind really strange humor and commentary on the world and consumerism go to www.plif.com and www.punchbaby.com has some pretty funny video clips. I recommend the LotR’s and Star Wars spoofs. Warning though there is one section that is almost solely porn cuts/bloopers/oddities. They do give descriptions before the download though so you can decide what you want to download or not.

That took me a while to finish. It’s back up and running again after being down last weekend, or it was up yesterday.

Hi, Miss Magic8ball

I know what you mean – all my friends are out of town, too, and I’m very bored. At least I’m not in Yellowknife

No, seriously, what’s Yellowknife like? It sounds … small.

Yeah that was a good one wasn’t it?

I think I’ve bookmarked 300 or so sites. I have them all on a zip disk. I need to reorganize it.

Yeah, it’s very funny. I’m glad you liked it. It’s amazing how much stupid, boneheaded idiocy there is in the world.

Yellowknife… Its not small in population… We’ve got a population of 20K. The longest it would take you to walk from one end of town to the other, if you don’t procrastinate, is about 2 hours.
We have 2 Macdonalds, 1 of them in our walmart,Saan, 3 grocery stores(2 extra foods and one co-op) A reitmans, Cotton Ginny, A&W, Pizza hut, Dominoes, Tim Hortons, Dairy Queen(shut down due to not enough staff members) Bata, and then theres a large selection of small bussinesses and about 6 banks. We have a jail. Oops, sorry, I meant correctional center…Theres a few gas stations, a HUGE canadian Tire, and lots of plumbing outlets.(You know how those pipes have a tendancy to freeze and stuff…) We have a theater where admission for a 14 year old is 15$, about 10 Bars, and 2 and a half arenas.(I say half because we have this new twin pad arena coming in that was supposed to be ready by new yearsa but which doesn’t even have heating or plumbing… the subject of much talk…)

I haven’t even gotten close to all there is here, but there isn’t really much more…

And although It may sound biggish, Its not. theres 1000 tennagers here AT THE MOST. theres about 8 middle schools, and only 2 high schools…

Of course, I live a good 16.1 km… On an island. Surrounded by water. We have to boat 5 km in the summer so I can go to school, for chrissakes. There are only 2 more poeple who live on that lake besides me, my mother, and my mothers husband. Oh, and the dog. So you can see why I would be bored. I have noone to talk to cept the squirrels… andthey’re all in hibernation. I can only skidoo for so long… and You can only read for so long. I have a computer, but It doesn’t work and I can only use my stereo when the generator is on which is only when we do laundry. The TV is always in use by mothers husband, and my mom seems to be always watching a movie on the one other tv in the house.

So. Thats Yellowknife. Specifically, MY part of yellowknife. You can see why I get bored…

I’m extremely bored today because I sprained my ankle at lunch time. While the upside to this Is I get to miss a half day of school, the downside is that I have nothing to do… Until my ,mother allowed me to use the computer, that is.

Well… Gotta go change the ice pack…

Thanks for the description. I have to say that I haven’t ever heard of about half the places you mention (Tim Horton’s? Saan?) – maybe it’s a Canadian thing. It does sound like you’re in the boonies. How do you get off the island in the winter?

I have a picture in my head of the lake surface freezing, and you being able to walk on it to the shore, but I have no idea if that would work. Where I’m from, we don’t have lakes, nor does anything get cold enough to freeze in a good, solid kind of way, so I don’t know about this sort of thing.

So, how did you sprain your ankle?

Tim Horton’s is a national doughnut-shop chain. Their coffee is unbelievably wonderful. SAAN stands for Surplus Army and Navy. It is a clothing store on a par with K-Mart or Wal-Mart in the US.

In the winter, they drive across the lake. You need 16" of solid ice to drive a pick-up truck over, and they get more like 16’ of solid ice in that region. Yellowknife is situated at 62 degrees N - the Arctic circle is at 66 degrees, for comparison.

It’s a desolate and lonely place to live, where they are. I certainly don’t blame her for being bored.

They do have pretty good coffe. However, if you’re an American visiting, you might want to know that they put your cream and sugar in for you. If you’re like me and a control freak, this can be very disconcerting. When I was visiting, I thought of is as the metaphor for our differing governments/econ sytems.

Can I come live with you Magic if I promise to keep you entertained? (I mean that in the most wholesome way- I swear) Are you amenable to 9 year old daughters (mine)?

Sure, Pres… if my mother will let you.

I sprained my ankle because jordan called me a peso whore and I kicked him in the shin and he pushed me. My freinds beat him up while I wobbled my way down to the office.

And during the winter, such as now, I drive over the ice. Right now we have prolly 28-30 inches of ice, so its perfectly safe.
Oh, and saan is like a Zellers… Its all clothes and shoes and stuff.
This week is even MORE boring because I have exams so I have to study alot. sigh It never ends…

Hehehe you have a lot more than there is where I live. Here there is one department store, one mall, 2 fast food places, 3 actual restaurants, one library, and one movie theater…yet there are 2 banks, 3 gas stations, 3 convenience stores, 2-3 bars, and a big bowling alley. Go figure. It’s incredibly boring, and if you want to go anywhere, you have to leave my isolated community and travel 1 1/2 hours by train to The Big City.

acrossthesea, Yellowknife is 500 km to the nearest settlement of any size (that would be Hay River, NWT). There isn’t even a train. Your choices are by Air or driving, and occasionally the busses run there.

About that lake…

I understand the whole boat in summer, truck in winter thing, but what do you do during the transitional periods when there’s too much ice to boat but not enough to drive?

It sounds like you’d be completely stuck for two or three months out of each year.

During transition periods, her family either stays in town with friends, or rents a place for a month to a month-and-a-half.

(I’m her aunt, and she’s in school. Hence my answer.)
