My wife has only lived in Melbourne for a year. She has a limited understanding of English. She likes movies with action, comedy and romance in the same movie. Obviously with little amount of just ‘talking heads’.
She likes Jackie Chan movies.I believe we have watched every one of his movies in the last year. She loves Bollywood movies, so no need for recommendations there.
Recently she has enjoyed ‘Charlotte’s Web’, and ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’.
Thanks for any help.
**Romancing the Stone
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
**
How about porn? No English required, lots of action scenes, happy endings. What’s not to love?
Romancing the Stone- she has already seen. Roger Rabbit is a good suggestion.
As for porn. There is almost never comedy, very few action sequences and little romance. Most porn is in fact very boring with terible acting and crappy dialogue.
She has not seen any. I have.
Big Trouble in Little China
Spiderman 1 & 2
Pirates of the Caribbean
Speed
Big Trouble in Little China -Saw it last week.
Spiderman 1 & 2 -Good suggestion
Pirates of the Caribbean -we went to the sequel. She was disgusted by the ocean creatures.
Speed- Too long and no comedy or romance.
What culture is your wife from? I’m assuming Indian, since you mentioned Bollywood. Maybe she would like Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle. It may sound like a joke, but actually it’s a very entertaining movie, despite being kind of crude. The “romance” part might be a bit lacking but it has a lot of comedy and a lot of action. She might also like E.T., which is not just a kid’s movie and was actually much more enjoyable when I watched it last night than it was when I was 10. Has she seen the original Star Wars movies? She might like those too - there’s romance and action, plus some comic relief. Sorry if this comes off as implying that a non-English speaker would automatically have the tastes of a kid when it comes to English-language movies - I’m just trying to think of films that are entertaining, not boring, and contain both comedy and action, and movies which mix the comedy and action genre are typically targeted towards younger people.
She is Cambodian. Maybe she may like ET. But, I think that movie is boring with virtually no action, comedy or romance.
It is nice to find movies we can both enjoy. When she watches the Bollywood DVDs I try to watch but they are not my cup of tea.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, even the ones I reject.
Keep them coming.
If she likes Bollywood extravagnzas, how about some big production number musicals from classic hollywood? I adore Kismet - it has singing, dancing, comedy and a wedding train with horses [and maybe a camel, I cant remember offhand] and the music is opulent. Annie Get Your Gun, Victor/Victoria, another absolute favorite Kiss Me Kate, just to name a few. How about South Pacific? Romantic, lots of singing, some comedy, some drama … enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours and absolutley beautiful island scenery. How about the D’oiley Carte companies Mikado? Or the Pirates of Penzance [kevin klein version, with linda rondstat running around in a nighty, woot!]
The thing is with Bollywood movies- they have everything- action, comedy romance, drama.
Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid
Some of those old Terence Hill, Bud Spencer spaghetti westerns.
Blazing Saddles.
The Gods Must Be Crazy series.
Silent Movie.
Astaire/Kelly musicals perhaps.
What, eleven responses and nobody’s said Princess Bride yet?
I thought the idea was to come up with nonbollywood suggestions?
Absolutely.
Fast moving comedy, a stupendous musical scene and a real insight into the educational system.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon:
Amazingly graceful martial arts; wonderful music (featuring Yo Yo Ma on cello), absorbing romance and a beautiful style throughout.
Princess Bride, as mentioned. Also:
Hudson Hawk
Labyrinth
Moulin Rouge
Strictly Ballroom
Priscilla Queen of the Desert
Bridget Jones’s Diary
So I married an axe murderer
The truth about cats and dogs
Sione’s Wedding
Zorro
Let’s see -
The Terminator, I and II, have some romance, plenty of action, but not a whole lot of comedy.
Ghostbusters has a lot of all three ingredients, as does Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit
If she liked Charlotte’s Web, then hou about Babe?
And I’ll second Strictly Ballroom.
Seen it twice.
Yes. I know she will like practically every Bollywood movie because they all include those elements. So I do not need recommendations
