Once again I turn to the Dope to help me with a translation into English. It is totally work related, so I will be indebted to whomever helps me. If you want anything in return, like a packet of Dutch stroopwafels sent to your adress, let me know. I also provide realiable Dutch translations in return, but somehow there isn’t much demand for those
Here it is. It is about a symposium (or conference? What is the difference?) on a computer model that has just been finished. The model maps the spread of nitrate in upper groundwater tables, a huge problem in the Netherlands as we have way too much cattle, so too much manure, so, too much nitrate in our environment. That is what we get for exporting meat to all of Europe while being a country the size of Massachusets.
Thanks in advance!
Announcing a symposium, marking the availability, starting march 2011, of IWANH, a computer model to calculate the spread of nitrate in the groundwater of calciferous soils in Limburg, Belgium and Germany. The model also calculates the effect of measures to decrease the spread of nitrate.
The symposium will take place in Maastricht, on March 31, 2011. Translators for Dutch, English and French will be provided. A definitive invitation will be sent in a few weeks, but registering is already possible by emailing xxx @ xxx.xxx. We would be obliged if you would pass this announcement on to collegues who might also take an interest.
Explanation on the modules for quantity and quality of groundwater in the model IWANH.
Future use of the model, by the three principals (institutions who commisioned the model) , province, water board and water company (the guys who make sure ground and river water is made into drinkable water from all taps in the houses).
The agricultural sector’s take on the model
Workshop technical aspects of the model and how lasting improvement can be ensured
Workshop nitrate measures and policies to reduce nitrate in groundwater

Future use of the model, by the three commissioners of the model: province, water board and water company.
The agricultural sector’s take on the model
Workshop: technical aspects of the model; how to ensure permanent improvement
Workshop: nitrate measurement and policies to reduce nitrate in groundwater
(I’m assuming the floors are the kind that’s mostly CaCO3 and that the final one is “how to measure nitrates and regulations to try and reduce the amount”, not “regulations related to nitrates and to reducing its amount”)
ETA: PITA email, seriously…
Nava, thanks ! That sounds very good. In fact, it is great that English, for you too, is a second language, (You’re from Spain, right?) even though you speak and write it so incredible fluently.
As the invitation is directed at German and Frech scientists, “European English” is even more appropriate here then UK or US English.
Fingers crossed that it goes well and all that… it sounds like a very interesting program. Given who the commissioners are, I assume there are EU moneys (and therefore EU reporting) involved at some point, but it might be worth it to send an invitation to the office of the appropriate Commissioner as well. I think that, while the program itself is very specific, the techniques that you have used should be transferable to other locations, soil types and contaminants as well. I did already say it sounds interesting, didn’t I?
