I was curious. I don’t know if they mention where in Paraguay he is, so I just picked Asunción. It is about 100 hours of driving to Necocli, Columbia. Then another 72 hours from Colón, Panama to Albuquerque. I hope Manousos, from land locked Paraguay, knows how to drive a boat across the ocean.
I don’t know how to best cross the Darien Gap, so I just picked Necocli and Colón because they seem to have good roads to them, and Google would give me driving directions.
I have doubts that MG (I think) is up for a 10,000 km drive, seeing as how it had trouble getting out of the garage. I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out he’s just driving across town, because he used to be a pilot in the air force, or something.
He strikes me as a “rule follower” (He was leaving IOUs for the owners of the lockers he was breaking into). There are likely unused vehicles and vessels of all sorts he can choose from, but will his ethics allow him to exploit those and other resources? Both Manousos and Carol have very strict opinions and principles that defy being altered by circumstances. I suspect they will both have to start breaking (bad) from those attitudes.
Yes, it’s the idiot ball of this show unfortunately, something where the characters have to be really stupid to drive the plot. The problem is that if we had an episode where Carol just sat down and asked the hive questions for an hour, it would ruin the mystery and unknowns of most of the future plot lines. I suspect that a lot of what will come in the future will be something that only works because Carol didn’t just ask the hive all the questions she could think of, but it’s frustrating when the main character simply doesn’t do the obvious thing in order to drag the story out.
I think the interesting question now is how many survivors refuse to join up. Diabate was having the time of his life and obviously said no, but most of the others were perfectly happy to join before. I bet the twist is that Laxmi refuses.
Patrick Fabian is great, that’s why. The collective knows it. I’d have chosen him over John Cena.
How did they know she was calling? What if the others call, “I hope you enjoyed the slightly modified Casino Royale.” Oh, does your Tuesday Car not start, we’ll have someone there before your elevator reaches the floor.
If all the Great Scientific Minds came up with is a big-arse shot to convert them, how can they convert them without using some kind of subterfuge (i.e. lying).
Just incorporate that into the RNA they will eventually blast out into space.
I still think some other advanced planetary system (let’s call them Vulcans) will broadcast out the antidote that the hive will think it wonderful and spray it all around. Or not.
The big mystery is what’s up with that particular HAM frequency? Those unfortunate prior peoples were 600 light years away. Is that how the hive has pretty fast internet between each other?
Is the most devout Buddhist of a mind that you cannot pick an apple? All the corn in Iowa. What month does that fall off? Oranges in Florida?
I gotta say, this whole not harming plants thing is a bit silly. There is no way this organism could survive at all anywhere. Forget eating, they can’t BUILD anything. There’s certainly no Africa sized satellite in their future.
I’m enjoying the acting and the characters. But as a show to think about? It’s not living up to my expectations. Hell harvesting fruit isn’t even harming the plant. It is helping spread its seeds more often than not. The characters and the potential for development makes it worth watching still, but my hopes for it otherwise is fading fast.
Being eaten is the entire evolutionary purpose of fruit, in fact. There is absolutely no way whatsoever to sustain even pre-agriculture hunter-gatherers with just fruit and seeds that gave already fallen off plants, never picking anything, never eating the “body” parts of plants. And I don’t mean “ten years” like on the show, I mean two ir three years if they are lucky.
I assume (i.e. I massively fanwank) that this issue is a now maladaptive evolutionary carryover from the species that originated the bioengineered virus. Perhaps the native environment of the founder species required an empathic bond to harvest food - i.e. the hivemind was universal, even partially extending to the very environment around them (shades of Alan Dean Foster’s Midworld). Which is something the Afflicted can’t replicate in a Terran environment so they’re doomed to eventually suffer a drastically smaller winnowed-down population. But one that at least can use this short window of opportunity of overpopulated productivity to build new transmitters to further propagate their virus through the galaxy.
I mean I read a lot of mostly soft science-fiction as a kid - you can fanwank anything .
Mine (as I have mentioned) is that the issue is a weapon to quickly kill the entire sentient population of the planet. Which is exactly what abandoning 99 percent of all food resources will do.
Yeah, I can’t say how things work out with their carton drinks. Also, no idea why they needed “space” (and unless she’s headed right back to Albuquerque) will have it.
Presumably, Manuos with his VHS and hi-tech HAM is bringing the latter along. No worries - all that equipment can be picked up in a store. I reckon even Manu was surprised that “turn the electricity on, everywhere” meant everywhere (though I wonder if the hedonist Vegas guy and the others had to ask)
When I was young, I lived next to a HAM enthusiast who had a 40-foot rotatable antenna. HAM signals keep bouncing off the ionosphere, so you can talk from, say, New Mexico, to Sydney, Australia. In our case, New York to Japan wasn’t a big deal. Like all radio signals. need to be on the same frequency.
Manu was getting nada except this one channel now worthy of two ??'s
That is going to matter (duh).
There are many weaknesses in the 600-year-old signal that the Great Scientists are working on. One would have to be: We can’t depend on making juice out of dead people or taking vegetarianism to the extent that an apple has to bonk you on the head before you can eat it.
So once Manu and Carol team up, it’s figure out what that HAM frequency is doing and how to interrupt/parse it without killing 7.5 billion people.
What possible other “solution” to gather the immune was possible without some means of subterfuge/lying? Especially as Carol has made it clear she wants no part of it?
And even if it’s “seen” by the very nice RNA virus to improve things so that nobody’s immune (of course then no story) since all 12 of them are being watched.
So after watching this episode I logged onto YouTube; which immediately gave me a 2025 year in review based on everything I’ve watched along with a personality analysis. Then first video that came up was a recap of this episode.
