Well, they already flew her around the world as the only passenger on an airliner, so…
The collective cares about making/keeping Carol happy because she is essentially Anthony from the Twilight Zone as far as they’re concerned. We’ve seen the damage an all out emotional meltdown brings, but who knows what sort of lesser but still significant damage is done if Carol can’t shop at Sprouts?
The logistics of the food-filled trucks is a little baffling, but I had the impression most of the people just emerged from the nearby houses where they evidently live.
Wasn’t that the point?
They had trouble isolating the electricity for her block. Was the Collective having that argument from Ghostbusters, but within itself?
I assume the only people they wouldn’t know about are people with literally no living relatives that live in complete isolation. Their mind meld would make a census very easy, even including missing people as long as at least one person knows OF them. The idea that they simply missed someone that is not some hermit living in a cave is a bit hard to believe.
Also at this point I’ve known Carol for a total of three hours or so and I know exactly what not to do to trigger her, the fact that they haven’t figured out how to act towards her is a little silly.
Well, would you have given her a live grenade or a replica? Touchy people are not always predictable…
I would have given her neither, correctly assuming her obvious sarcasm was obviously sarcasm. We don’t know if they can do that, they were certainly willing to give her a nuke if she genuinely asked, so maybe they have to do everything she says. I was mostly talking about the doting subservience, which instantly triggers her. She has been clear in wanting to be left alone, and that she will ask if she truly needs something.
How would you behave if you were in Carol’s place? Anything you’d ask that she hasn’t?
Me, I’d ask them to use the earth’s resources to determine what happened to other species infected by the “virus”. … Not gonna believe an answer of they’re fine and thrived necessarily but it seems like they don’t lie and have to comply with a request.
My mind goes to thinking with the species as an infected body mode. I am assuming that power is being conserved as all resources and being diverted to preparing to spread the virus to next hosts and that preserving life on this planet is immaterial once that gets accomplished. Once infected our species of intelligent life is doomed if it can hit that point.
I don’t get why they need to indulge my every whim but they apparently do. “Tell me how the mind meld could be eliminated with preservation of individual human minds and of a reasonable chance for human survival.” No? “Give me the ability to set off all of the world’s nuclear weapons.”
And given that my understanding is that humanity is now dead as soon as they can spore, and it can’t be proven to me otherwise, I am getting angry. Back to the crappy isolation procedures in the lab. Humanity is infected and we cannot be allowed to infect other sentient life forms.
I don’t expect this is the show’s direction mind you. This is more Rapture and Carol is the Left Behind I’m guessing. But if the virus can’t be cured then I’d set auto destruction mode.
I feel like there’s an undercurrent of “This is what humanity could do if we just stopped messing around and got to work.” Stop worrying about profit, status, all that, just whoever is closest does the job. Some sort of Luxury Space Communism meets The Body Snatchers.
They don’t need to, they just assume that is the best way to keep them happy. What they need is for the non infected to not get emotional, which they do by indulging their every whim. That’s my problem with the show, they keep plumbing Helen’s memory for things that made Carol happy in the past instead of putting one iota of thought into what would make her happy right now.
Questions I’d ask:
How does the hive ability transmit/communicate? Can it be blocked? If they don’t have an answer, then arrange an experiment with a lead shielded room, a Faraday cage, etc.
What are all the other people doing? Are they building a new transmitter?
After the hive absorbs anyone left, what is the next goal?
Can the hive create original art, music, literature, etc.? Does it desire to?
What is the influence of “bad” people, and bad desires, within the hive?
What does the hive desire beyond its biological imperatives?
What are the most interesting secrets people have been hiding?
How does the hive make decisions? Can it single out the view or opinion of an individual member?
I’ve no familiarity with a store called “Sprouts” yet I doubt it’s entirely vegetarian. And those trucks arrived within minutes. If they stocked meat or non-veggie stuff - that supply is going to run out soon.
I reckon Carol will next just dial up and ask for veggies, fish, milk & cheese (is dairy okay?). Meat is right out. Yet she likes oat milk so that’s all good.
I don’t think I’d agree that this is quite like the Twilight Zone where Anthony is omnipotent and can wish people “to the cornfield”.
“The Others” know the immune are not looking to destroy all of them, and I reckon the anger has to be genuine and not feigned. Also, the Others would be working on that weakness along with people-finding and whatever they discover they need to be more efficient.
I hope episode 4 will have Carol somehow visit Manuoso who seems, at the moment, to be out of reach despite having a telephone. Is he in a reinforced bunker? Does he have Skype?
If killing them, or even incarcerating the immune is out of the question and “be nice” is the rule, why not at least pick an island in the Pacific and put them all there? What is their end goal once they have entire world domination, if it’s not to keep markets open and collectively-zombie-shop for veggies.
Also, not sure what to make of Zosia giving all the info on Vodka from Voda and Aqua Vitae if somehow everything she says isn’t broadcast to everyone.
He just doesn’t wanna talk, told her to fuck off.
There would be nothing that involves conveying information from one person to others because everbody shares the same thoughts. So no interpretive “what does the artist mean?” art. Maybe purely aesthetic art, but why bother with a painting of happy little trees if any one of them is looking at real trees at the moment? No fiction because everybody would know what was being written as it was written, and what would they write about? You don’t write books about how your thumb gets along with your index finger, there are noonger interpersonal relationships because there are no longer individual people.
There would also be no journalism, and no non-fiction books (you don’t write about what everybody already knows). No acting. No games. No competitive sports. I don’t know how ahedonistic it would be: the individual units might not eat just protien paste from a bucket, but you can be sure the majority of variety of foods will disappear. Clothes will be necessary, but fashion will cease, along with everything else designed to impress anyone else. Apparently children are immediately assimilated, so there would be no more production of toys. No production of anything related to emotional interactions: no Valentine’s cards, Christmas presents, etc. No conspicuous consumption. The majority of all jobs would disappear overnight. I’m not sure what a hive mind would do with all its spare time but it would almost certainly allow the population to shrink to a small fraction of the current level.
Well, once they had the great minds thinking alike, those who devised “Earth Census v1.0” did not initially find this guy. I just get the feeling that wherever he is, he doesn’t have a minder talking about the origin of the word ‘water’ standing next to him.
And they need to improve on v1.0.
How they missed him to begin with is a good question. They told Carol he was in a storage facility, the only thing that would make sense is a homeless person with no family living in hiding.
They can get frozen and canned meat supplies from around the world. It should last a while.
The body humanity has been infected with a “virus”. Viruses don’t think so they don’t have goals but to the degree we think in terms of what a virus wants it is exclusively to spread more copies of itself or some mutated version of itself to other hosts. Those that do not do that well cease to be once their host dies.
I will under if different languages are still a thing, or if this just still applies to the immune. I’m not talking about understanding the hive mind but about personal expressions of culture, since hive members sometimes identify as individuals, in part, at least to the immune. They dress differently and non-immune family members dress in a culturally consistent way.
Not that it is possible to read too much into these things, of course.
So if you grew up eating tandoori and pappadoms or arroz con pollo this might not change in the short term.
Yeah, sadly that might be the end-game and has been for other intelligent cultures with radio dishes.
The Nerf-tossing guys in the first episode were talking about how big this antennae had to be and one concluded the size of Africa. Dunno about that, yet I suppose the bigger the better, esp. if you’re not aiming at anything yet build numerous antenna’s they certainly will for full day coverage.
I reckon all we know is about 600 light years away there’s a planet where the only reason for existence is to keep their antenna going. Kind of sad.
