Poll: Islands of Engagement?

One of my co-workers, 21, female, attractive, has been together with her boyfriend for 3 years.

He graduated college last year (23), and has been working for a big company earning $55K or so per year.

Now, he’s been hinting that he might “pop the question” some time soon, and she’s been hinting that she really isn’t ready, but she isn’t sure her hints have had any impact.

Just last weekend, her boyfriend told her to “pick an island”…choose any island in either the Pacific or the Carribean, and he’d pay for them to go there. One week, any island.

Everyone she’s talked to (except me) has told her that she’d damn well better be prepared to come back wearing an engagement ring.

What do you folks think? Is this a sinister plot to get engaged? Or are people reading into this too deeply? Although I haven’t told her, I think the odds are 75-25, in favor of a big diamond ring making the trip with them.

I say she’s either going to come back engaged or broken up because she wasn’t ready to get married.

Probably, but who knows? I’m not sure why it even matters. If the were communicating well, it wouldn’t be an issue. At the very least, she should tell him that she’ll let him know when she’s ready to go away on this vacation with him.

Oh, yeah. Considering the overall transparency of the offer, I’ll go so far as to offer 50-50 odds on the ring box being wrapped in either a bananna leaf or a cocoanut.

Unless, of course, her answer is, “any island where you won’t propose to me.” Then, I give it even odds that the island sinks.
