I concur. But not only because of the polls, but mainly because of the subjects he starts. They seem to be taylor made for the users of this board, and that from a user who has been here less than a week. Too much insider awareness for a newbie, too focused to be without an agenda. It’s like AI was told to generate click bait for this specific user group: the SDMB. It feels to me like somebody was trying to make a point, idk, like, that he (I guess Humans is a he) is particularly clever, or that he was unfairly treated. That will show us!
So, without further ado, here is the poll:
Is it too “on point” to mention that the username “Humans” sounds like something an evil AI from the future would pick to sound like one of us, right before the Killbotz show up?
“As you can see from my name, I am one of you organic filthbags. Now, I, Humans, wish to be taken to the leaders of your resistance!” I for one fully expect a meltdown where the disguise is torn off, showing the cold metal endoskeleton beneath, or possibly one knitted into a shape similar to a tube closed on one end.
Please please please let me have some fun while it lasts! I mean, I even overrode my principle of never answering to a poster whith an “88” in his username for this, after this sunken cost I invested it must be worth it!
I misread this thread title as asking if we should pit humans, as in all of humanity. That wasn’t what was asked, but I still support pitting humans. We suck.
In the Trolls thread, I initially proposed that he’s either a trock or a 12-year-old kid, and concluded that it might be both. Funny, though, before I saw this thread I was already thinking of a third option – a malicious experiment using AI. If you used an AI to scan thousands of threads to get a sense of the board’s zeitgeist, and then started making threads intended to be maximally annoying, you would get pretty much our new poster here.
I marked Other. The question asks if I would like to Pit the user. That answer is No, because they’re not worth the effort; trolls just want attention and I find them tedious and dull rather than actively aggravating, so I will not go to the trouble of Pitting them myself. However, I would support a Pitting and perhaps participate in it a bit, which goes beyond the flat No yet falls short of a Yes. So I split the difference.
Who is that? If I saw “88” in someone’s username I would have thought it would stick out (you were born in 1988, yeah right). I don’t recall seeing it here except for a couple of long banned posters.
Edit, never mind, following the link back I see Dave88
So far, I don’t mind Humans stirring up the pot with his poll threads. If he takes it too far (say, a thread per day for the next 50 days in a row,) then maybe it would get to be a bit much. But I think it’s still ok thus far.
I am sorry, it is unfortunate that Discourse does not show the name of someone you quote in a reply, but only the avatar. Good that you found out who I meant and know what the issue is with that number in a name.
Pit the new human, whatever the fuck for? Their threads have traction and substance. Unlike many threads that clutter the board with hypothetical go back in time and change one thing and what happens next type of glurge. Or threads from charter members that ask what is tomato purée, how do I quote? How do I blur a post.
If it’s a troll, you’re feeding it. This thread is ill advised and the fun you may get from baiting it is at everybody’s else expense.
Personally I’m not really convinced the poster is anything other than a doofy kid who doesn’t realize how small a community we are. You can make a million posts on Reddit and still be a drop in the bucket, but it takes very few threads here to stand out. We get these kinds of posters from time to time.
And I get there are other signs, but “they’re too comfortable here” is a really shitty metric for troll hunting and is kind of an asshole thing to say about a new member of any community.
I just did a quick scroll through some of his posts and if he’s a neonazi, he’s hiding it well. He did mention visiting Austria, though. Cue sinister music.
You see that I don’t religiously adhere to my principles. I still don’t like the use of 88 in names, but in this case I am flexible: I responded to Dave88.
ETA: Nice music!
Interesting idea. I kind of hope you’re right — just out of curiosity about such an experiment. (Once is enough, though — hopefully the Mods could make sure of that, without much extra effort.)
The only music I hear (every time I see the thread title) is based on the fact that “Would you like to pit at humans?” can be sung to the tune of “Do you wanna build a snowman?”.
