Have you purchased a Powerball ticket, or will you before the next drawing on Saturday, November 5?

  • Yes, because I regularly play the lottery.
  • Yes. I don’t normally buy lottery tickets, but the record high jackpot motivated me to buy one.
  • No.
  • We don’t have Powerball in my country, but I demand a vote in this poll.

Due to pet food being hard to find repeatedly over the past 3 years you’ve resorted to ordering cases of your pet’s food from Amazon, 40 cans to a case. It’s been okay, until the last couple of orders. Your second-to-last case had 12 dented cans. And your last order had 9 dented cans, with 2 dented so badly the seals popped and leaked.

Amazon won’t accept returns when you report that pet food arrived damaged. Instead they give you a full refund and say to keep, toss or whatever else you want to do with the food.

Do you ask for a refund for both damaged orders?

  • yes, ask for both to be refunded because both orders arrived with significant numbers of damaged product
  • no, less than 1 full case worth of cans between the 2 orders were damaged so 1 refund is fair
  • no, only ask for 1 refund because they’re back to back orders and you don’t want a reputation for frequently requesting refunds given they can and do ban accounts

Dented – but unbreeched – cans are useless cans.

  • True: I won’t touch them without hazard gloves
  • False; the contents are fine

What, if anything, is the minimum amount of money you would accept to move out of your current home right now? You can take your stuff. Fair market value plus:
  • FMV is enough
  • $250,000
  • $500,000
  • $1,000,000
  • $5,000,000
  • $10,000,000
  • More than $10M
  • There’s no amount of money I would accept.

Would you consider using an undented, but swollen, can of dog food?

Something you want to buy is 40% off. Nice! What sort of math are you doing to decide if the lower price is acceptable?

  • multiplication. I multiply by .40 to figure out the discount
  • multiplication. I multiply by .60 to figure out the final price
  • multiplication and subtraction. I multiply by .40 to figure out the discount then subtract from the original price to figure out the final price
  • I don’t have to “do” the math, I’m good enough at math to know the sale price instinctively
  • I don’t do the math, I don’t care about the final price or the total discount enough to bother

0 voters

Let’s say something is 75% discount:

  • multiplication. I multiply by 0.75 to figure out the discount
  • multiplication. I multiply by 0.25 to figure out the final price
  • multiplication and subtraction. I multiply by 0.75 to figure out the discount then subtract from the original price to figure out the final price
  • I don’t have to “do” the math, I’m good enough at math to know the sale price instinctively
  • I don’t do the math, I don’t care about the final price or the total discount enough to bother

I would do math differently for 40% discount and 75% discount

  • True
  • False

0 voters

I would do the math differently for different discount rates, and I knew this about myself before I took the polls above:

  • true (I did know this about myself before I took the polls)
  • false (I didn’t know this about myself before I took the polls)
  • I wouldn’t do the math differently no matter what the discount rate was

I like finding out things I didn’t realize about myself:

  • True, at least most of the time
  • False, at least most of the time
  • Sometimes; depends on what the things are
  • Sometimes; depends on what mood I’m in
  • Sometimes; depends on both what they are and what mood I’m in

  • I’ll sometimes use rational math to calculate a percent, e.g. 75% = X * 3 / 4
  • No, I don’t

It’s Game 7 of the World Series. Score is tied. Bottom of the 9th. Bases are loaded. You are the batter. It’s two strikes and three balls.

The pitcher throws you a pitch that looks to be right on the border of the strike zone. In that split second, you know what it means. If you strike out looking, you will be intensely criticized for years to come. But if you swing, you know the odds of hitting this ball are not all that great. Furthermore, the umpire has a reputation for ruling such borderline pitches as balls.

What do you do?

  • Swing
  • Don’t swing

Sorry, I had an error. I meant to say your team is losing, not that the score is tied. But I can’t edit it now.

Since there was no winner in Saturday’s Powerball drawing and the pot has grown even bigger, have/will you buy one for the next one, tonight, Monday November 7?

  • No, didn’t buy a ticket for the last one, and won’t buy one for this one either.
  • Didn’t buy one for the last drawing, but now I bought/will buy one for this one.
  • I bought one for the last drawing, but I won’t bother buying one for this one.
  • I bought/will buy one in both the last drawing and this one.
  • I told you, we don’t have Powerball where I live, but I demand a vote in this poll too.
