What are your current living arrangements? For the purposes of this poll “own” includes having a mortgage and not just owning outright.

  • Own a free standing house
  • Rent a free standing house
  • Own a single level condominium
  • Own a multilevel condominium/townhouse
  • Rent an apartment
  • Rent a multilevel condominium/townhouse
  • Own a mobile home
  • Rent a mobile home
  • Rent a room in house or condo
  • Prison
  • No current stable living arrangements
  • Living with a family member who owns the residence
  • Other if you just can’t make your situation fit in any of the above

I picked ‘Own a single level condominium’ in the living arrangements poll, but I’m not sure I shouldn’t have gone with ‘Other’. My building has 4 units side-by-side. The two end units are single-level, the two in the middle have a partial second story. Mom says that a townhouse has to be multi-level, so my place must be a condo. But I think that ‘condo’ implies something less house-like and more apartment-like, and also if my next door neighbor’s place is a townhouse, then how can mine not be? What do you think, is there such a thing as a single level townhouse?

I thought a condo was a particular type of ownership structure for an apartment, having nothing to do with how many floors/levels/stories it has.

  • I did too.
  • I think you’re just wrong about that.
  • I think you’re wrong about that, but I also think a condo can have two stories.
  • I think you misunderstood the poll question.
  • Other.

Inspired by the cruise control discussion in the discussion thread: You’re on a freeway, going say 5-10 mph above the speed limit in the “slow” lane. You come up behind an old VW Bus going slightly below the speed limit. Traffic isn’t all that heavy, but the cars in the “fast” lane are going a little bit faster than you were going, say 10-15 mph over the speed limit. You move over into the fast lane to pass the VW, and…

  • Maintain the same speed I was going previously, pass the slower vehicle, and them move back into the slow lane as soon as it’s safe to do so.
  • Speed up to the prevailing speed of the traffic in the fast lane, pass the slower vehicle, move back to the slow lane, and then resume my previous speed.
  • Maintain my previous speed, and just stay in the fast lane, because I’m a jerk like that.
  • Speed up to the speed of traffic in the fast lane, and then just keep going that fast.
  • Just stay in the slow lane and slow down to the speed the bus was going; I’m in no hurry.
  • I’d never be driving that fast in the first place; I’d probably already be going the same speed as the bus.
  • I’d never be driving that slow in the first place; I’d already be in the fast lane.
  • Need more information; it depends on the precise traffic conditions, whether or not there are other slow vehicles ahead of the bus, my mood that day, the alignment of the planets, etc.

12:00am Tuesday means:

  • The very beginning of Tuesday
  • The very end of Tuesday
  • Either one depending on the context
  • It can mean both, and is therefore too ambiguious, and we should just use 24 hour time instead and call it 00:00 if we mean the beginning of the day.

You and a friend are planning a camping trip. You have two potential destinations, site A which has extremely beautiful scenery and B which is nice but less attractive than A. However, site A is very remote. To get from your campsite to the nearest town takes two full days of driving over rough roads. There are no phones, no cell service and no internet connectivity between the town and your campsite, and you are unlikely to encounter anyone else along the way. On the other hand, campsite B is a half hour from a town. (Assume that the total travel time from your house to each campsite is the same; the only difference is how quickly you can reach “civilization” from the campsite.)

How much would the isolation of site A affect your decision on which trip to take?

  • I would definitely take A! I like traveling to isolated places!
  • The isolation concerns me a little. I’d probably take A but I’ll be checking to make sure I’m prepared for any eventuality.
  • That level of isolation sounds very scary to me. I will probably go with B.
  • There is no way in hell that I’m going to be part of that horror movie waiting to happen. I would never go somewhere as isolated as A, and I would definitely choose B.

A few polls about family portrait photography:

You know, everyone has to dress up and go to the Photo Studio at Sears or wherever, I don’t know where people get these things anymore, and you spend 30-60 minutes getting various family photos taken, usually about as many as the youngest family member allows.

Is this, or something like it, a childhood memory you possess?
  • Yes
  • No

Is this something you’ve done with your own family, as an adult?

  • Yes; my spouse made me do it

Do you find such things to be cheesy, even if you’ve had it done yourself?
  • Nothing cheesy about it.
  • It’s a little cheesy, yeah. But we need at least one nice family photo!
  • My portraits are classy and attractive. Everyone else’s portraits are cheesy!
  • Of course. The cheesiness is part of the point.
