You are president. The debt ceiling will soon hit the limit without being increased. The opposing party controls Congress and is demanding a list of conditions that you find unacceptable, such as deep budget cuts to priorities and causes that you consider highly important. They are not willing to offer any concessions of their own in return. If the U.S. defaults on its debt (which has never happened before), the economic and societal consequences will be severe. Do you cave in to the demands?

Who do you like better:
  • Bill Paxton
  • Bill Pullman
  • I like them both about the same.
  • I always get them confused; I like the guy from Twister more than the other guy.
  • I always get them confused; I like the guy from Independence Day more than the other guy.
  • Wait that’s not the same guy in Twister and Independence Day?
  • I don’t have a preference, and I don’t understand how people get them confused, aside from having similar names.
  • I don’t know who either of those people are.

@susan

Do you ever engage in specific time-bounded short-term abstinence from enjoyable things? I’m not talking about overall religious strictures (like pork for Jews/Muslims) or allergies or general weight-loss diets, but rather things that are given up for a specific generally recognized period.

Pick as many as apply:

  • Lent
  • Ramadan
  • Yom Kippur
  • Other religion-based short-term abstinences
  • Dry January
  • Veganuary
  • No Nut November
  • Movember
  • Other secular-based short-term abstinences
  • I never abstain from anything, including polls

A malicious Q appears to you. He tells you whichever decision you make; you, your family and your closest friends will be spared. For everybody else though, he will either kill the best 10% of humanity or the worst 90%. No loopholes. What is “best” is extrapolated from your mainly subconscious internal ranking system from before the Q appeared and can’t be changed.

If you defer it, the Q will eventually find someone and you, your friends and family will not be immune.

  • Kill best 10%
  • Kill worst 90%
  • Defer decision to someone else.

If the decision were up to you to evaluate all of humanity - the entire current 8-billion population of the planet - and decide how many should “stay”, how many would you permit to live, based off of their character, politics, personality, skills, potential, intelligence, religion, sexual orientation, gender, age, geographic location, health, the way they treat others, and other attributes?

  • Everyone would live
  • 80-99% would live
  • 50-80% would live
  • 30-50% would live
  • 10-30% would live
  • 1-10% would live
  • Almost no one would live.

Repeat of post #4, but 3,334 polls later, is this thread still a good idea?

  • Maybe
  • Yes, but it should be in Thread Games

If you voted in post #4, did you vote the same above?
  • Yes
  • No
  • I didn’t vote in post #4

Being the SDMB and all, I object to the above poll because this was not technically exactly 3,334 polls later, because not all posts were polls, including the actual OP, and that may or may not even be the correct number of posts between them anyways.
  • Yes!
  • It may not have been exactly 100% technically correct, but I understood, and that’s fine.
  • I’m against that level of pedantry in this forum, even this being the SDMB and all.
