You are president.

A hostile adversary nation announces that they are going to launch a massive nuclear strike on your country 1 month from now.

You have nukes of your own and are capable of retaliating if you so choose. They are on submarines, and highly survivable. But the adversary confidently proclaims that you will not retaliate, because they have run scientific projections, and if you do retaliate, the combined effect of both nation’s nukes will permanently and irreversibly destroy the Earth’s climate, while the first initial strike of nukes alone would not suffice.

You consult with your environmentalists, scientists and intelligence advisors, and they run calculations and confirm that the adversary’s words are indeed correct - that if you simply absorb the first wave of nukes and refrain from retaliation, the Earth’s climate will in fact survive; albeit worsened; but if you launch your own nukes in return, Earth’s climate will be irretrievably broken beyond repair.

Assume that your only options are to launch all your nukes in return, or nothing at all, no option in between. The day comes, and the enemy launches their nukes. Do you retaliate?

Assume that you are someone who gambles on sports games:

Would you rather bet money that your favorite team will win (to make the victory all the better,) or bet that your team will lose (as mental consolation if they lose?)

  • I’d bet money that my team will win
  • I’d bet money that my team will lose

Hollywood has released a movie that promotes a political or social cause that is important to you. How blatant do you want them to be about it?

  • I want the movie to be very forceful and direct in its messaging
  • I want there to be some push in favor of the cause, but not too heavy
  • I want it to be very subtle, so much so that people may not even realize it was promoting it

There were some comments in the Oppenheimer (movie) thread about “gratuitous” nudity. This subtext I got is that some people are opposed to that.

Nudity (short of porn level nudity and sex) in R rated movies:

  • I prefer my movies with no nudity
  • I think it’s fine if necessary for the plot
  • If characters are nude, let the audience see it. We’re all adults here.
  • I would like to see more naked people in mainstream films
  • If the actor is okay with it, I’m okay with it.
  • It’s complicated/other
