Have you ever been to a fan convention? A fan convention is a public gathering devoted to a particular type of literature or art, like comic books, gaming, science fiction, or a particular work or franchise like Star Trek, Doctor Who, etc. Professional conventions devoted to technology, science, etc. do not qualify as fan conventions.

  • Yes, I’ve been to one such convention.
  • I’ve been to between 2 and 10 such conventions.
  • I’ve been to between 11 and 25 such conventions.
  • I’ve been to more than 25 such conventions.
  • No, I’ve never been to a fan convention.
  • I’ve attended some type of event which I’m not sure qualifies as a fan convention, but some might consider it so.

You are looking for a space in a grocery store parking lot. Near the store there are four spaces with a sign in front of them with that reads “Reserved for Veterans”, all empty. The nearest other empty spots are about 40 feet further away.

  • I am not a Veteran and so I would park further away
  • I am not a Veteran but I would park in one of the the spots although I’d feel a little guilty about it.
  • I am not a Veteran and I would park in one of the spots without feeling guilty at all
  • I am a Veteran and would look down on a non-veteran who parked in such a spot.
  • I am a Veteran and wouldn’t care if a non-veteran parked in such a spot.

You go to the post office every day before it is open (the lobby is open 24 hours so you can run in and drop off your item).

There are three handicapped parking spaces right in front of the door. The closest non-handicapped space is literally four spaces from the door (so, 35-40 feet away). You are typically the only person there, and it takes about 30 seconds to run in and out.

Do you park in one of the handicapped spaces?

  • Yes, every time
  • Yes, but only when I am the only one there
  • Yes, because I have handicapped parking privileges
  • No, never

You overhear a conversation. Two people are arguing about some topic related to safety and precautions. It could be, for instance, one person arguing that the other person left food sitting out at room temperature for a long time unrefrigerated while the other argues that it’s perfectly safe and the first person is overreacting. Or it could be about whether or not the home needs a particular security or fire-protection system - or about parenting style and whether kids should be allowed to do a particular activity or not.

Without more context or knowledge, which are you likelier to conclude?

  • One person is normal, and the other is a fearful OCD control-freak
  • One person is normal, and the other is being irresponsible and careless about hazards

How do you hyphenate? I don’t mean what you think is the right way to hyphenate; how would you actually write something like this, say, to a thread on the SDMB or a report to your employer.

What’s your response to the ad showing a guy incapable of unscrewing the lid on a jar of tomato sauce, and having to order an emergency pizza?

  • It’s a perfectly reasonable choice
  • Why didn’t someone teach him about holding the lid under hot water for 30 seconds to loosen it?
  • I have a kitchen contraption that unscrews tight lids
  • The pizza will be better than whatever he cooks anyway
  • He’s not as dumb as the person who loads a paper plate with a mound of spaghetti, holds it by the edge and is shocked when it all dumps into someone’s lap
  • Make sauce with fresh ingredients and you don’t have to mess with jars
  • He needs to work out at the gym
  • I hate Domino’s

Have you ever had a parking space that was designated for your individual use?

This does not include parking spaces designated for use by a group which you are a member of, such as being handicapped or pregnant or a veteran.

It also does not include a parking space at your residence.

  • No

When someone (a guest, not a repair person) comes to your residence for the first time, do they get a “tour?”

  • I’ll typically offer, and they’ll typically accept
  • They typically ask even if not offered, and I’ll oblige
  • It happens now and then, but not often
  • That’s rarely been a thing at my place
  • That’s never happened.

Which side of your car is the fuel filler on, and what country/region is it from? I’ll allow multiple selections for those who have multiple cars.

I purposely separated Japan and Britain from the rest of their continents in case the side of the road they drive on makes a difference. Otherwise I lumped the rest of Asian and Europe together just to avoid having too many poll options. (I guess India also drives on the left, but I’m assuming so few of us own an Indian car that it won’t affect the poll).

  • Left – American car
  • Right – American car
  • Left – Japanese car
  • Right – Japanese car
  • Left – Other Asian car (Korean, Chinese, etc.)
  • Right – Other Asian car (Korean, Chinese, etc.)
  • Left – British car
  • Right – British car
  • Left – Other European car (German, Swedish, etc.)
  • Right – Other European car (German, Swedish, etc.)
  • Left – Some other car
  • Right – Some other car

Do you want results from EV owners? I.e., whether the charge port door is on the left or right?

This probably belongs in the discussion thread, but let’s say ICE cars only. But I’ll allow answers for any ICE cars you previously owned, if you can remember (and that goes for current ICE owners as well).
