According to a random unsourced meme on my Facebook feed this morning, an average person owns 8 vehicles during their life. How many vehicles have you owned?

For purposes of the poll, let’s stick to land vehicles, no airplanes or boats (I suppose you can count an amphibious vehicle). But you can count any sort of land vehicles – cars, trucks, motorcycles, collector cars, buses, etc. But only count personal vehicles, don’t count vehicles that were registered to a business or as commercial vehicles.

In the polls above, are we counting bicycles? Tricycles? Big wheel trucks? Does it matter if the vehicles were technically owned by our parents but for our use? Owned in party by our spouse?

  • Only motorized vehicles
  • Any vehicle suitable for transporting humans
  • Only vehicles we unambiguously owned (in whole or in part)
  • Any vehicle that was primarily used by the poster for some reasonable length of time
  • Any vehicle available for the poster’s use
  • Only vehicles exclusively owned by the poster
  • Include jointly owned vehicles (such as an auto registered jointly to a husband and wife)
  • I don’t care, or don’t have an opinion, but want to vote (perhaps to see the answers)

  • No, I didn’t know that. But hey, it works!

On the car poll, I was confused at first. Mr. Mallard and I co-own a vehicle. We share it. There is no second vehicle for the household. This is how we’ve always done things. It took me a while to figure out that other people were talking about multi-car households where cars were shared, so I wanted to know how common our situation was.

For the poll, it’s you + spouse(s) or partner(s) or housemate(s) or cat(s)—however you construe the household and its car-owners. I’m thinking “one car per insurance-paying adult,” “one car shared between,” or “not,” but I put an “other” for teen drivers and whatever else I haven’t thought of.

  • At times, I have co-owned more than one vehicle: one for me, one for spouse (or similar)
  • I have co-owned vehicles, but one at a time: shared vehicle
  • I have never co-owned a vehicle

  • I didn’t know that was an option, but now that I do, I’m setting it to not take mirror-reversed photos.
  • My cell phone doesn’t have that option. Yes, I’m sure!
  • I don’t have a cell phone.
