A seller has an item she wants to sell, and goes to a marketplace website (a site similar to eBay.) She lists her item for $1,000. But later that night, at 7:00 PM, she decides she listed the price too low and edits it to $2,000. (The website allows instant price changes that kick in swiftly.)
But unbeknownst to the seller, a buyer had clicked “purchase” on her item at 7:01 PM for the $1,000 price and then bought it. From the buyer’s view of the screen, the item was always $1,000 throughout the whole purchase process and never showed “$2,000” at any point, even at the moment of “confirm purchase.”
And thanks to some weird contradictory workings of the website, the marketplace website sends a confirmation email to the seller, “Your item just sold for $1,000.” But the seller goes to the sale page itself and sees a digital record showing that the buyer clicked purchase 1 minute after the price edit, and the sales page itself says “$2,000.”
So now the buyer insists that he should only have to pay $1,000 because that’s what his screen showed all along. The seller insists she should be paid $2,000 because the buyer clicked “Purchase” 1 minute after the price was edited, and the digital records confirm this to be the case.
What should be done?
You’re an athlete for your national side’s sports team, one of the best members of the team, playing in the world’s biggest sporting tournament for your sport. Due to a bad call by the ref during a game you get penalised and regulations state that you need to miss the next game.
However the call wasn’t that bad, a genuine judgement call, and precedent has shown it never gets overturned post game. In this case though the corrupt sporting body, possibly in direct cahoots with your corrupt head of state has decided to waive this suspension against clearly established norms.
