(Somewhat based off of real life)

Your son has a pet spider. It is completely non-venomous, and harmless. No itch-causing body hair, either. It is big and scary-looking. He keeps it in a glass box in his bedroom and never takes it out of the room. It costs virtually nothing to feed and take care of. It is docile.

Your daughter complains about the spider and says “I’m terrified of it; it’s hard to even sleep, knowing that thing is in our home. Can we please get rid of it?” Her bedroom is far away from the son’s bedroom, but she is unnerved anyway.

  • Let son keep the spider
  • Get rid of the spider
  • other answer

Someone posts a “what would you do” poll. One of the options matches what you’d do but is incomplete. For example, options are “I would do A,” “I would do B,”, or “Other”.

You would do A, but with additional action C. How would you answer the poll? With either choice, you are free to explain further in the discussions thread. Recognizing that your answer might vary depending on the specifics of the poll, pick the one you are more likely to go with. If you can’t decide, that probably puts you in the “other” camp.

  • I pick “I would do A”
  • I pick Other

In another poll, one (and only one) of the options matches what you would do, but there is an added explanation that doesn’t really match your reason for doing it. For example, options are “I would do A because X,” “I would do B because Y,” and “Other”.

You would do A, but more because Z. How are you more likely to answer the poll?

  • I pick “I would do A”
  • I pick Other
0 voters

You are posting a poll yourself. If one of the options is mostly, but not exactly, a match for a respondent, would you prefer the respondent choose that option or choose “other”?

  • I prefer they pick the option that mostly matches
  • I prefer they pick “other” unless one option matches exactly

It has come to my attention that in the UK they call a sandwich consisting of a piece of breaded chicken filet on a bun a “chicken burger”. Which is closest to your definition of a “burger”?

  • “Burger” implies a sandwich that contains a patty made of ground meat (or a vegetarian equivliant).
  • Other things served on a hamburger style bun can also be “burgers”, even if they’re not made of ground meat.
  • Neither precisely describes how I define a “burger”, which I will explain in the discussion thread.

Do you think any of the following are rude, not very good manners, etc.? I’ve heard of people thinking each of these are rude or not.

  • In the grocery store checkout lane, the person ahead of you does not put down the plastic divider stick (on the conveyer belt) for you when you get in line behind them.
  • Someone thanked you for a wedding or baby gift in person or by phone call, but did not send a thank-you note/card.
  • At a dinner gathering, potluck, etc. someone does not eat some of a food that they don’t like. (In other words, they don’t give this particular __ a try or force themselves to eat it.) Assume there are no allergies or lifestyle/religious preferences.
  • Someone asks IF you voted or if you remembered to vote. They don’t ask who you voted for.
  • You hold a door open for someone as you enter a coffee shop or a restaurant with counter service. The person does not invite you to go ahead of them in line.

Do you think that none of the above are rude?

  • No
  • It’s complicated

[wrong thread]

Due to some form of astrophysical jjiggerypokery a causeway is created connecting Earth with an alien world. They are human sized bipeds, friendly and social and there is some intermix of people and culture. They never developed team sports but like the idea and quickly start playing them. It turns out they outplay human men by about the same level as human men outplay human women

Quickly all elite players are aliens so a new alien league is set up in most sports. Every player in the soccer Alien Premier League is better than Messi at his prime for example.

If you wanted to watch a match on the TV

  • I’d rather watch the aliens
  • I 'd rather watch the humans
  • I don’t watch sports.

On election day, if someone is going to, they should ask:

  • If I voted
  • Whether I voted
  • Oh come on, who cares about this distinction?
  • They could ask either one, but they do mean slightly different things.
  • Other / None of the above / Et cetera

If someone were described as, “She earns $0.35 million per year” instead of “she earns $350,000 per year,” would you think it a strange way to describe the number?

Same for any other context, such as “This football stadium can hold 0.11 million spectators” or “This country has a GDP of $0.87 trillion.”

  • yes it’s strange, but it’s okay
  • yes it’s strange, and I think it’s a bad way to describe the number
  • no, it’s not strange

What age difference have you had with a current or previous partner/spouse?
I included the first option because some might feel that a smaller age gap was a bit more significant if one person was younger than 21.

  • 4 or 5 years, but the younger person was 18-20 years old
  • 6 - 10 years
  • 11 - 15 years
  • 16 - 20 years
  • 21 - 30 years
  • 31 - 40 years
  • 41 years or more
  • I prefer to be within 5 years of my partner/spouse’s age.
  • I’ve always been within 5 years of my partner/spouse’s age, but I was not opposed to age gaps - it just never happened.
  • Other, I would like to say something else, etc.
