I’ve seen the “racist” things she’s posted in the past. The thing is, She’s a comedian and everyone knows her and that she’s joking.
I waited to make this thread because I worry I’m giving these trolls attention and bringing light to this very personal hack on her website recently. I also don’t use twitter, and I’m glad I don’t. It seem worse than Facebook, and I see some crazy shit on FB.
I really don’t know where the line is drawn… I just know that the attacks on her were, and were MEANT to be, WAY more malicious.
Now her website gets hacked. It’s vile folks. I hope she weathers this storm.
I have no idea where the Leslie Jones hate comes from. I find her hilarious, I think she’s save SNL since joining the cast. I haven’t seen the new Ghostbusters but she is the only reason I’d consider doing it.
Yeah, I find the hate directed at her bewildering. She’s good at being funny, and I’ve never seen her be needlessly offensive to anyone. What else do you want out of a comedian?
Perhaps she didn’t know what she was getting into when the entered the free-for-all that twitter is. I’m saddened that the trolls drove her from the platform, as I’m sure they see that as “winning”.
The hacking of her accounts is another matter altogether. I hope those dipshits end up with a nice set of chrome bracelets.
I honestly haven’t seen her in anything but ‘Ghostbusters’. Even though I didn’t care for it, and didn’t personally think the role she got was really well thought out, she’s DEFINETLY on my radar in the future.
Personally, I don’t find her that funny - but that’s beside the point. She’s a decent human being and the hatred and bullying directed at her has been shocking and infuriating. People are the worst. God bless her for having to deal with it.
Yep, she’s not my cuppa tea, either, although I love her energy and her Olympic tweets were wonderful. But can we have a simple conversation about her comedic approach? Not with this shit going on - at this point I’d love to see her get her own TV show or some other additional career bonus just to give those bullies the finger.
What is amazing is how hard she has worked for decades - and she only got considered for SNL in front of the camera after Chris Rock plugged her to Lorne. She comes all this way, gets on SNL in her 40’s - just unheard of, a wonderful story - and these vile people show exactly what LJ has been up against all her life, career-wise.
I’ve read some of the things she’s posted too, and they didn’t seem like jokes. They came off angry and racist, without the quotes around the word. They would have gotten much negative mainstream publicity if said by a white comedian regarding other races.
I’ve said ignorant stuff in life too… (not THAT ignorant). Thing’s I’ve regretted. I’m the real life ‘Michael Scott’.
Is there a double standard? Perhaps. Substituting ‘white’ for ‘black’ in many instances will get you in trouble. I just don’t think you should be proud of being on the battle front of skirting that line, saying horrible things, and possibly causing someone personal distress.
She never bullied anyone.
x-ray vision, if people felt SO offended by her posts, why didn’t they engage with her instead of brutally bullying her?
I feel really bad for her. I’d feel bad for anyone this sort of thing happened to unless they were a total monster, but it seems like Jones is in a particularly rough position of being famous enough that this has been a news story but not so famous* that I’d assume she has a mega-fabulous life that makes it easy to laugh off the haters.
This seems worse to me than the iCloud leak a couple of years back because it was targeted specifically at Jones, and apparently out of sheer spite. I can’t see there ever being a good reason to attack someone in this way, but if Jones had recently been accused of some horrible crime or if a vengeful ex were responsible then those would at least be bad reasons. Instead it seems like vile bullies have just decided to go after her for being there.
*I may admittedly be too out of it to have a good sense of how famous she is. I haven’t watched SNL in years and I don’t think I’d even know who Jones was if she hadn’t been in the recent Ghostbusters movie, but she’s obviously not like Angelina Jolie or Jennifer Lawrence-level famous.
She’s black (and the “wrong” kind of black, at that), she’s loud, she’s opinionated, she doesn’t fit within the socially-agreed-upon standards for beauty in America, and she’s a woman. That’s pretty much where the Leslie Jones hate comes from, in a nutshell.
I’d go one step further. She fought back. And someone actually got banned from Twitter over it (as a last straw sort of thing after several suspensions). And now, because of their actions, Twitter is ramping up their protections.
These are the same SIWs that are losing ground everywhere, and they found a convenient target to take it out on. And are too stupid to figure out they are making things worse for themselves.
I figured that was it. I don’t know when this started, but I’m guessing her success at what she does was the trigger.
I’ve heard people say she’s just a stereotypical ‘obnoxious assertive black woman’ or something to that effect, I don’t think people realize she’s doing a parody of that.
Much of the hate started with a tweet war with British “journalist” (a word here used to mean piece of shit troll) Milo Yiannopoulos and his followers and alas, it grew from there.
She’s hysterical, she seems a good person, and whatever she’s like in person she doesn’t deserve this. Unfortunately there’s little to nothing she can do about it.
