I laughed. Of course. The tweet was funny to me.
Link.
But. I had recently joined a black board to post to when you white folks get on my nerve.
I let them know I thought it was funny. I’m not welcome there anymore.

This is why I feel bad for child actors. When you’re an adult and decide to get into the entertainment business, you’re making a conscious choice to be an object of ridicule for comedians. But a nine-year-old has no conception of the level of exposure and shit-throwing that’s going to come her way if she becomes a movie star. It’s fucked up. And it’s a shit move by the Onion. They should know better.
I think they have already buckled. I heard they deleted the tweet. I heard they are getting a TON of shit for this one.
Really? I don’t know anything about this actress besides the fact that she is young, but I think the point of the joke was there was no way on Earth someone so young could be a cunt. So, really, I don’t think she was the butt of the joke, at all. It’s like calling a newborn a cunt.
However, if she was actually acting kind of bratty and the Onion’s comment was in response to that, then I rescind my previous argument and agree that the Onion’s tweet was in poor taste.
Gestalt, I think that yeah, she had been pinging some people’s ‘a little too precocious’ meter for a minute now.
Still, I think the Onion was just joking with the idea that a kid could be a cunt. It was just a joke. I just don’t understand the outrage.
Deleting the tweet was a big mistake. They should have just said “We’re a satirical newspaper, go fuck yourself.” Deleting it shows weakness. Now every self-righteous, holier-than-thou twit who follows Hollywood news will descend on the Onion, sensing blood and seeing the opportunity to get their 5 seconds of fame by winning the competition to pack the most outrage and racial sensitivity into 140 characters.
Who the fuck is Elizabeth Hawksworth? Just some random dipshit, apparently.
Heh, I too am in the minority on my ‘black board’.
I think there’s a general feeling that such a joke wouldn’t be made about a little white girl. Which, given the depraved comedy I enjoy, I know to be a ridiculous notion. I’ve heard awful, awful things about Dakota Fanning.
But, yeah, the outrage is of the ‘woe be unto black women’ variety. Pretty cringey joke, though.
Not gonna lie. I laughed, and I laughed pretty hard. I didn’t take it as an attack on the little girl. I really just saw it as a joke they were making with other adults that they could laugh at. Did not seem mean spirited or like an attack on Qu.
Honey, I am getting DRAGGED. I honestly can’t ever post there again. I now know the true meaning of ostracized.
To keep it real, though, I have noticed a tinge of annoying behavior from Q a few times in recent interviews, but I think overall, the Onion was going for a ‘she’s so sweet and precious, how could she ever be considered a cunt’ humor. Which means it really was a compliment.
But yeah. The levels of outrage are off the charts. People are calling the Onion pedophiles and everything.
This is horrendous, disguting, and inexcusable.
This might even be worse than when Jonathan Swift suggested that the Irish sell their children as food.
I think the pedo charge is being leveled at Seth McFarlane because he made some joke about her being almost old enough for Clooney. Pretty tame shit on the ‘edgy’ scale. I guess, as a community, we’re supposed to be circling around our baby.
But we already have a lot of Irish children. I’m just… I’m just sayin’.
But yeah, I just see that as The Onion being a little ridiculous for the chuckles. Like, “Yeah, that completely adorable child actress you all love? Well, she’s kind of a cunt.” Haw haw haw. They’re not attacking her; they’re just being silly. But that’s just me.
I don’t blame you for laughing and I can understand how it can be seen as funny. I enjoy plenty of gallows humor and sick jokes myself. I get the joke they were going for, although I don’t find it funny. The difference between a dead-baby joke and calling a nine-year-old actress a cunt is that the dead babies aren’t real. She is an actual human being with feelings. Do you want to be the one to explain to her, “no, honey, you see, it’s actually a meta-joke, so they weren’t really calling you a cunt, so it’s all OK!”
There’s no justification for it. Humor doesn’t justify it, edginess doesn’t justify it. The guy writing for the Onion’s twitter account is simply a bully who got a boner by making fun of a little kid in front of millions of people.
Yep. I’ll explain it to her. Somebody better.
You see, when you become a celebrity, and you get lots of attention and lights and awards and money, you will also get people saying mean things. Better learn to shrug that off, especially when it’s just a joke and not meant to really cut you.
I have no doubt that many people are complaining that MacFarlane made a joke that she is “almost old enough for Clooney”, but the actual joke was “she has 15 year until she’s too old for George Clonney.” The implications of the actual joke are not nearly as bad as the implications of the joke as it is being retold.
cite?
In the immortal words of the film In Brudges:
Ken:* Harry, let’s face it. And I’m not being funny. I mean no disrespect, but you’re a cunt. You’re a cunt now, and you’ve always been a cunt. And the only thing that’s going to change is that you’re going to be an even bigger cunt. Maybe have some more cunt kids.*
Harry: [furious] Leave my kids fucking out of it! What have they done? You fucking retract that bit about my cunt fucking kids!
Ken:* I retract that bit about your cunt fucking kids.*
Harry:* Insult my fucking kids? That’s going overboard, mate!*
Ken:* I retracted it, didn’t I?*
I think the Onion is to be commended for helping the young star to live a normal life by exposing her to the sort of social interaction she would experience if she went to a typical public school like the rest of us.
Ah, I get what you’re saying, and fair enough.
But I don’t get this because, again, I don’t think the joke was about making fun of a little girl. Meta-joke and all of that.
The outrage is that he even dared to think of her in a sexual manner. So knowing the actual joke wouldn’t tame that. Once the outrage tornado gets turning, good sense is too quiet to be heard.
