By that criteria, this thread is basically pointless. The concept of “popular” but “sucks” clearly is going to be based on individual opinions, which the OP specifically states.

I disagree. I think a reasonably intelligent person can tell if a TV show is competently written, acted and produced, whether or not it appeals to them personally. “Sucks” doesn’t mean “I don’t like it”; it means “the people who made this failed at what they set out to do.”

Everybody Loves Raymond was one of the best sit-coms ever.

Agreed. I saw this show recently and loved it.

The interpersonal dynamics were witty and instructional.

While I agree with what you’re saying, I think it is hard to argue that a popular sitcom objectively sucked in the sense that “the people who made this failed at what they set out to do.” Finding unpopular sitcoms that suck is easier.

At least we can all agree that The King of Queens sucked.

I dunno about it being a sucky show, but why it lasted nine freaken seasons* is something I can not fathom. The show was- to me- the definition of a “meh” sitcom- neither so bad I hated it, nor good enough to actually watch more than a couple episodes. Bland and only mildly funny.

*While Wonderfalls didnt really last one season and Pushing Daisies was canceled after two glorious seasons. And I am sure many other posters can also list great sitcoms that were canceled way too early.

I feel that way about so many sitcoms. There were a few that were on in the same timeframe: The Jim Belushi “cute family”, the Matt LeBlanc “cute family”, Tim Allen’s many “cute families”, that annoying “cute family” with Diedrich Bader… I don’t even know the names.

I really wonder if a huge segment of America just wants to sit on the couch with a bag of cheesy poofs and a can of soda (or lite beer… shudder), and completely turn off their brains.

(Now, make it couch, nachos and good beer and I’m there. But I’d still be using enough brain cells to need some content in the show.)

(not a sitcom, but) That’s what I say about the reboots of Magnum and Hawaii 5-0. They shit on the memory of the original shows, while hitting all the TV cliches. Who likes this crap? People born after 1989 that never watched a rerun, I guess.

Yeah, I mean, The King of Queens wasnt bad, but not good either, and very predictable. Shlub but honest and hard working guy married to a hot and smarter than him wife- maybe that is a fantasy for many. To me- dull. D-U-L-L.
