True and there is the little known full edit with the stanza “This is a reggae song, not legal advice. I am not your lawyer” ![]()
I’m not sure if “Ooh ee ooh ah ah ting tang walla walla bing bang” is good advice or bad.
Some of Lemmy’s dietary advice is questionable from a high-fat, high cholesterol perspective.*
Come on baby, eat the rich
Put the bite on the son of a bitch
Don’t mess around, don’t give me no switch
C’mon baby eat the rich
C’mon baby eat the rich
*although other aspects of his lifestyle were even more problematic.
Do suggestions for government policy count? In which case you can’t get much more awful than this verse in The Pusher by Steppenwolf
Well, now if I were the president of this land
You know, I’d declare total war on the pusher man
I’d cut him if he stands, and I’d shoot him if he’d run
Yes, I’d kill him with my Bible and my razor and my gun
The intervening years have shown this whole"war on drugs" thing he suggests, to be… err…less than ideal as government policy goes.
Encouraging cough syrup (dextromethorphan) abuse might be considered poor advice.
Yeah I tried strychnine and sniffing glue
I’ve been known to take a trip or two
Banana peels and pesticide
Nothing can beat this swinging ride
This stuff is thumbs up
Pass another dixie cup
“Romilar D” - The Fuzztones
Tan me hide when I’m dead, Fred.
Tan me hide when I’m dead.
So we tanned his hide when he died, Clyde,
And that’s it hangin’ on the shed.
Everybody, now . . .
Well, on that theme… don’t eat the vegemite!
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said
“Do you come from a land down under
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can’t you hear, can’t you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover”
Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six-foot-four and full of muscle
I said, “Do you speak-a my language?”
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich
‘Bury me up on the hill, Bill,
Turn me face to the sky’.
‘We’ll plant you up on the hill, ya dill,
If you’ll just shut up and die’.
“Go on, take the money and run.”
The song is saying your actions have consequences so think them through first, not don’t ever take any chances at all. Don’t do something foolish like chase down a beautiful waterfall and just hope your dreams about it come true because in actuality once you reach it you will plummet off the brink. The waterfall is a metaphor for our desires to do harmful shit to ourselves.
I actually heard this in a Keybank lobby the first time I dropped off a deposit for my new job in 2017.
That song was playing in a bank? Yikes, that’s even worse!
Yeah, but the song doesn’t say that at all.
It does though…
They never get tired of putting me down
And I’ll never know when I come around
What I’m gonna find
Don’t let them make up your mind
Girl, you’ll be a woman soon
Please, come take my hand
Its safe to assume “they” here is the adults in the girls life. They are “putting him down” as this grown ass man is coming to their house and creeping on their teenage daughter. They want to “make up her mind” by convincing her not to have anything to do with this creep. She absolutely should not take his advice, and listen to those adults in her life about this and she should absolutely under no circumstances go and take his hand.
It’s safe to assume you’ve cut and pasted the lyrics to fit your point, it as easily says ‘don’t let you racist, classist parents choose your life for you.’ the only age identifiers in the song are boy, girl and, someday soon, man and woman.
This 100%.
Yeah specifically “Girl, you’ll be a woman soon” and “you’ll need a man” (boy is only used as a quote from the, presumably at least middle-aged, adults and the way its used clearly isn’t meant to indicate he’s an actual minor). That and the context of the song clearly imply that singer is an grown adult and the subject being advised is a teenage girl with a significant age difference between them (Neil Diamond was in his late twenties when he wrote it).
Even if you give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he means “about to turn 18” by “be a woman soon” (rather some even skeevier meaning), its still absolutely terrible terrible advice. Do not assume that this grown adult who clearly wants to bang you, a teenage girl, has your best interests at heart and the adults in your life do not.
Aint nothing wrong with a good murder ballad. Maybe not appropriate for a rugby game but…
When you stumble across a murder…don’t fire off a couple of rounds to flag down the police.
Waterfalls aren’t entirely stationary.
