I’m hoping for a reasonably sized and/or feasibly sized porno backlash. I find these huge dongs a bit disconcerting and end up making silly jokes and can’t take it seriously. I think that the “identifying with the guy” explanation is the most plausible one I’ve read so far. But I think there might be another reason: A big penis just “reads” better on screen. Just like (legit) actresses need to be super thin just to look normal, because the camera adds 10 pounds. Video is not reality, and distorts everything a little, so certain traits need to be exaggerated just to look right.

I think this is crap.
Actresses don’t “need” to be super thin just to look normal. In fact, it’s very clear to me, when i see them on TV, that plenty of actresses are seriously on the skinny side. I can’t count the number of times i’ve seen popular, successful actresses on TV or in a movie and thought, “Jesus, she could do with putting on a few pounds,” or “Her arms are so damn skinny.”
I didn’t say that there are no actresses on TV who look skinny. But it’s often said that the camera adds 10 pounds, and whether or not that’s true, I’m quite sure that some things read in different ways onscreen than they do in real life. I’ve seen some porn in which the guy probably had a pretty average sized penis but becuse of the medium he came off as practically castrated.
Evolutionary hypothesis: Getting a bit turned on makes your own penis bigger, which in caveman social world may have allowed you to more effectively defend your own status/mate in the presence of such big-penised competitors.
My pet theory on this (and I could be wrong, it’s just my explanation) is thus:
In many animals species (not just mammals but others like reptiles, birds, fish, etc.) the males engage in displays that are directed not just towards females but also towards other males. The male-to-male displays are not (in heterosexual males) meant to solicit sex, of course, but they are integral to courtship and mating. They are associated with states of arousal.
Could it be that human males also, to some degree, engage in sexual displays not only towards females but also towards other males? And that, prior to civilization and lots of clothing, the penis was part of those displays? It would certainly explain some of the oneupmanship and dick-measuring contests that go on. So, men displaying their penises may be arousing to other men not because they want sex with men but because of the strong association of penises with YAY HAPPY FUN TIME ORGY SEX SEX SEX. When the penises come out men are going to get some! Yay!

I think the average size looks quite average myself. Although that’s not the part of the porn I pay attention to.

Ah, my first post on The Straight Dope, and I think I picked a good one. Of course there is a huge variance here between each woman and what she’s attracted to, but for me?
