I think that bleach has it right. Just last week there was a special on the porn industry on ABC Primetime. There was one comment that Viagra is almost omnipresent. In fact there was somebody talking about one male actor (no name given) who has been known to take 5 or 6 pills a day.
I do think that one of the main reasons for the actors being able to last so long is the drugs that can be taken to increase performance, and I’m not talking about Viagra.
Amphetamines increase the amount of times it takes to orgasm ten fold, it allows you to maintain a ‘rock hard’ erection for literally hours on end if the right stimulation is provided (and naked female porn stars are definitely the ‘right’ stimulation).
The amphetamines, apart from making erections harder and last longer, also make it quite hard to actually orgasm. Intense concentration is nearly always needed in these situations to actually ‘ejaculate’. This can be a minor problem, but can also have its advantages in the porn industry. As it is harder to orgasm on amphetamines many times the orgasm (energy) builds up but is lost again, only to have to be built up again and again. This build up of sexual energy can lead to some pretty spectacular, high volume climaxes, just what the porn industry wants from the men.
It’s interesting to note what Q.E.D says in his post about certain cold medications that ‘drastically reduce my ability to “finish” quickly, if at all’. Most cold medications I know of contain Pseudo Ephedrine, which is the main precursor to meth/amphetamine production.
But yeah, I wondered why the report did not mention Viagra. And I have seen (yes, I have seen, whattaboutit? ) pre-Viagra-age porn where at times it has looked like the “stud” was having severe problems keeping it up.
Ooze is correct about the stamina of porn stars. A few years ago I was a production assistant during the fiming of a scene for Gluteous to the Maximus (Seymore Butts). The main scene that was shot that day lasted about an hour (Tom Byron & Ron Jeremy starring). I was in an adjacent room with some of the “talent” watching it on a monitor.
I saw a documentary (Wiseman?) that showed how sperm samples were collected from apes. The small ones just needed a test tube and a banana. For the large ones, a banana shaped electrode (rather than just a banana) was inserted. Turning on the juice delivered erections and sperm samples continually until the juice was turned off.
“I” imagine the same procedure would work on difficult porn stars.
Amazing how many first time/one time posters showed up for this thread. Hmmmmmmmmm…
And yes there are obvious editing tricks. I’ve seen scenes looped 3 or for times in the same “session.” After a while you start to be able to call when the next “unghh…yeah…like that…” is about to be blurted.
Max, while there are a lot of first-time posters here (and most of them seemingly only one post), we are reasonably convinced that they are different people.
So, to those of you who are new and want to stick around, welcome to the Straight Dope Message Boards. To those of you who are new and have only one post… I shrug my shoulders in your general direction.
Eeep…didn’t mean to sound accusatory there, C K. Thanks for not chewing me out in front of the class. Still, goes to show what draws people out of their lurk-holes!
OK…I was waiting for an answer to my question…I am a long time fan of Cecil’s but new to the boards. Anyway, does the fact that most male porn stars have small testicles or sacs(surgery?) have anything to do with their stamina? I was under the impression that surgery was performed to make them somehow last longer, not to mention the fact that most of the time they need quite a bit of coaching by hand to maintain an erection. As I thought that Viagra mainly helped keep an erection. Me, on the other hand, the wind blows just right and, well, you know.

In that book (?) she states that they often used several guys penises for one shot, thus, there is more than one penis, but since thats all you see, you assume its the same guy. This idea is lacking in the SD article.
PS: I know she has two books, there was one before this, but I can’t find it to verify which book she mentioned this multiple guy but one penis fact.
Euty didn’t try to cover all the possibilities within movie making, other than to say that it’s a movie – not a reflection of real time. Stunt doubles, carefully placed cameras so that the audience can’t actually see if the guy is erect but he acts like he is, drugs, time lapse photography, prosthetics, animation, CGI… all the techniques of movie making. Well, all the low-budget ones, anyhow.
I recall seeing a promo for … uh … coming attractions (well, they were) and the spokesguy and spokesgirl were on a boat, simulating “the act” as they wrapped up their spiel. Due to the pitching of the boat, some below-the-waist shots couldn’t be avoided, and not only were they not actually having sex, the guy wasn’t even erect.
Granted, this was only a promo, not the feature itself, but there’s no reason why this shortcut can’t be used all the time.
