Porn: What the hell happened to threesomes?

When I first started watching porn videos in the late 1980s (yay VHS!), one of my favorite things was the MFF threesome scene. I use what appears to be the traditional definition of “threesome”, wherein each of the participants has sexual relations with each of the other two participants, often/preferably simultaneously.

In the '80s, and into the '90s, in “mainstream” porn, these scenes were common. The girls in the videos performed bisexually, equally enthusiastic for both the male actor and the other girl. One girl on her back, the second girl doing down on her while being fucked from behind. One girl on her back, getting fucked, while the second girl sits on her face. Etc., etc.

Now, I find videos labeled “threesome”, and they’re … not. Sure, there are two girls and one guy, and it may start off with some faux “lesbian” play between the two girls, but as soon as the dick appears the two girls will essentially forget about each other. Then the scene becomes either “one guy fucks two girls” or “two girls share one cock”. There may be some token kissing or breast-fondling between the girls while one of them is being fucked, but that doesn’t count as “threesome” to me.

Nor is it a “threesome” when the scene is MMF and it’s just two guys doing one girl. That’s not a “threesome”, it’s a double-team. To be a threesome, the two guys would need to be bisexual and “engage” with each other. Granted, I wouldn’t watch that (not to my taste), but at least the description would be accurate. (And on a subnote, I’m getting tired of MMF scenes being labeled as “gangbangs”. No, sorry, a “gangbang” needs, at a minimum, three men.)

So what is the deal with these “threesomes”? It can’t always be that the girls simply aren’t willing to go down on each other. In many cases I’ve seen the same actresses doing pure “lesbian” (or at least “hot girl-on-girl action” scenes that include oral sex), but if there’s a man in the scene, that all goes out the window.

I suspect that this is a directorial decision, and I don’t like it. It sends this weird, unfortunate message that the girls in the scene are only doing each other because there isn’t a handy cock available, and as soon as a cock wanders into the scene they can drop the “lesbian” act and focus on “the real thing”. And, if my interpretation is on the mark, this is possibly the most misogynistic concept I’ve ever seen in porn.

Once the man enters the scene, the focus turns to him. If you posit that porn has become more misogynistic over the last 20 years, then this trend makes sense. I’ve heard that meme quite often (and even with too much time on my hands there’s no way I could stomach watching enough of it to make that comment definitively, though I’d say what “mainstream” stuff I’ve seen does seem more misogynistic to me).

Standard disclaimer that porn is not real life, the sex industry is not really about sex, etc. etc.

I prefer the classic movies from the late 70’s and 80’s. I can’t recall many times that the 2 ladies focused on themselves when a guy was there too. Usually the ladies started things out and then the guy becomes the focus.

Sometimes the better directors would have the guy doing the lady doggie style while she muff dives the other lady. Thats always a good scene. :wink:

I’d guess its time consuming getting everyone positioned just right for filming those scenes.

Hey, directing multiperson whangdoodling is tough. And sure, now there’s stuff that helps your leading man stay hard all afternoon but it’s still a pain to get everyone on their marks and properly lit as much as it was in those earlier, hairier (much hairier) days.

Plus we’ve run out of the people who were failed actors so they could at least try and sell the scene. Now it’s people who went directly into porn for its own sake having themselves grown up watching porn sex to begin with. Since porn sex is a sort of parody of real sex, you end up with a parody of a parody.

That’s why I like Gina Gerson. She showed up on a porn site where the same boring male actors shuffle through the same sequence of positions, in the same order, in every video, and she brought her scene to life.

See the more normal the people look the easier it is for me to roll with it, if everyone looks fake with all their body hair shaved it starts taking me out of the porn. Most modern porn the people in it look they came from vats on porn star island.

My guess would be that it’s market forces. In the 70s and early 80s, the production companies were just making stuff up that they thought would sell, and the populace just accepted it because that’s all that was available. Slowly they figured out that when people watch porn, they’re watching it for the sex, not the stories. They axed the stories. Then they figured out that they were watching it for the big boobs, so all the women got implants. Then they figured out that your average porn viewer isn’t looking for a representation of a wholesome, loving time. He wants hard core thrusting and for the woman to look like a rag doll with no other value than to get filled up by him.

On the other hand, the total quantity of sensual, loving sex between threesomes that is produced in a year today is probably several times larger than was produced in the entirety of the 70s. It’s just seems rare, due to the glut of mainstream stuff.

And part of it was that the old-school writer/director started with a preexisting paradigm assuming that for a feature as opposed to a “loop”, you need a “regular” film premise to provide the excuse, then insert (ha) the sort of sex scenes he and his friends and the backers they need in order to film/distribute like or think the public will like. As time goes, the next generation realized that there’s no need for an excuse, you can do porn for porn’s sake, and there’s bigger profit margins in focusing on the big-boobed “hard thrusting”, AND the technology (video instead of film and then digital) reduced the expense needed to publish/distribute.

You also have the problem that porn has to stay out on the edge. As our sexual mores changed in response to the porn from the 70’s and 80’s getting more accepted, porn had to move the boundaries out further and further. You don’t see many old school threesomes anymore because porn has done 100,000+ of those and has to move on to new and better things to keep ahead of the curve. For every guy saying “why don’t they do this more?” there are two saying “Not another threesome! Show me something new!”

If the man is trusting like the mainstream population wants him to…woman one cannot stay steady enough to please woman two. Simple physics problem.

That being said the variety at your exposure on the internet should be able to accommodate your interests. Just take a seat, get out a bag of pop corn, quick scroll through a few 100 threesome vids , and save the links to the ones that you like.

I’ve complained before about how often, and inappropriately the word “misogeny” gets thrown about, but this deserves some kind of honorable mention.

Seriously though, I think it’s just that scenes have become a bit more formulaic. For example, the vast majority of regular boy-girl scenes seem to go BJ -> (optional) play with tits if woman has large boobs -> couple vaginal positions -> (optional) anal -> cumshot on face.

So you might just as well complain why, in boy-girl scenes, do guys rarely return to the boobs once they’ve gone on to full penetration, and say that shows hatred of women’s role as mothers or something.
