It seems to me that there are plenty of other routes to get exposure to meth. I’ve heard of kids being exposed by crawling around on floors contaminated by vapors during the manufacture of meth. When I managed apartments, one of our biggest concerns about drug users was the potential contamination to the entire apartment they were in. If the mom’s boyfriend is an addict, he could have it on his skin, clothes, hair, etc.

On the other hand… drug users and their enablers have made a lifestyle out of lying.

What is a “barely detectable” level of meth? Is it in the neighbourhood of “residual of a normal dose in the last 3 days” or in the range of “within 3 to 4 months ago”?

Assuming a person takes meth regularly. (I’m sure it happens). Then, their bloodstream and excretions will contain detectable levels. However, urine contains decent levels because that is the major path by which the body rids itself of unnecessary chemicals. Something like seminal fluid, one presumes (IANAD) does not get created by attempting to concentrate and remove blood contaminants. (If anything, the opposite). So the concentration would be so low that at best it should match the blood levels. Just because it’s in the neighbourhood of the bladder does not make it a backup reservoir for the same function…

So a full pill is taken, which then dilutes throughot the body to what, 1/10,000 or more of original amount. Body mass and fluids probably amount to 100+ pounds, and the original pill was a small fraction of an ounce That’s pretty dilute. It also immediately starts to be excreted, so concetrations in the general blood stream on average are pretty low.

So she swallows maybe a CC or so of minimally contaminated fluid at low concentration.

Several points come to mind:

“Gee, mom, maybe you should spit instead… Duh.”
“Do you always blow him right after he took a hit?” (Actually, that should not matter - worse would be blowing him just before, so that his “reservoir” refills while his blood is at maximal concentration of the drug)
“How many times a day do you blow him?”

See, good parental chit-chat can be prouctive.
My BS meter kicks in, because unless the test is capable of detecting incredibly fine concentrations, 1CC or so of very dilute drug mix once or twice a day should not give detectable levels. I gues it would be like taking a tiny fraction of a salt-grain-sized chip of a normal pill. I would suggest she’s more at risk from backwash if the guy chewed a pill or three then took a sip and backwashed into her beer.

Finally - who said she tested positive? Why the test? Sounds like she’s on some sort of court-ordered testing program to stay clean or else. If so, then however she spins it - why would you be anywhere near a person who could derail your tests if it is that important? Why would you hang around that temptation?

I gather she is on probation. I have no idea why she felt it necessary to tell her son that she flunked a mandatory test in the first place since he hasn’t seen her in years. But since he is in town, she wants to see him, so maybe she is afraid he’ll hear about the test results from another family member or something. She’s a liar and an addict. And he keeps putting his trust in her.

I told him I was going to get a factual answer about it and it would be up to him to ask me if he wants the truth or not. I won’t shove it down his throat. Har har, yuk yuk.

So if you take a full dose, they can only detect it for 3 to 5 days at the outside? I doubt taking a very very dilute 1cc sample would then be detectable even immediately.
