Preventing terrorists from obtaining assault weapons is not the same as shooting a fleeing burglar in the back.
Supreme Court rejects challenge to assault weapons ban by a 7-2 margin
The U.S. Supreme Court steered clear of a politically charged fight over gun rights, turning away a challenge to a law banning semi-automatic assault weapons and large-capacity magazines in a Chicago suburb.
The justices left intact a federal appeals court decision that said the Highland Park, Illinois, restrictions don’t infringe on the constitutional right to bear arms. The appeals court said residents have plenty of legal self-defense options, including handguns and other types of long guns. Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas voted to hear the case.
Positive gun news!
That’s a false equivalence. “Punishing” someone by requiring them to follow the same restrictions every other person follows isn’t a punishment. Are we currently punishing folks who want to use heroin by not allowing them to use heroin?
But even if it were a punishment, stipulating that, folks in favor of gun control want to punish people by commandeering part of their property. That’s still not equivalent to punishing someone by killing them.
Whatever other arguments there are against gun control–and my time on this board has convinced me that there are some decent arguments against many forms of gun control–this argument won’t hunt.

In other news, Man shot after attempted home invasion in Denver
According to Denver Police, around 4:15 a.m., they received a report of a possible break in and shooting in the intersection of South Wolff Street and West Exposition Avenue. A short time later, a man walked into a local hospital with a gunshot wound. He had non-life-threatening injuries.
The homeowner reportedly heard someone hopping the fence when he was home with two kids. The homeowner called their relatives who showed up at the property. One of the relatives shot the alleged intruder who was in the homeowner’s backyard.
I wonder how close the relative lived.
Me, I wonder why shooting some guy who hopped over a fence is positive news. There are times when lethal self-defense is warranted. This is not one of them.

In other news, Harvey man shot girlfriend’s ex after he stormed house: JPSO
A Harvey man shot his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend in the chest with a shotgun after the ex-boyfriend forced his way into the couple’s home on Sunday night (Oct. 11), authorities said. Douglas Moody, 31, of Belle Chasse, suffered wounds to his chest, neck and head, according to a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
Moody’s former girlfriend called 911 on Sunday about 11:15 p.m. and told operators he had contacted her several times threatening to harm her and her new boyfriend. Moody – the father of her child – told the woman he planned to drag her out of her house, kick her teeth in and kill her new boyfriend, the arrest report said.
She frantically called 911 a second time, crying. A JPSO report didn’t indicate what she said in that call. Within minutes, operators received another call, this time from the woman’s new boyfriend. He told operators that he had just shot a man, according to the report.
When seconds count, police can’t be everywhere.

In other news, trigger-happy moron loses her permit :
Tatiana Duva-Rodriguez thought she was doing the right thing when she pulled out her pistol and fired at a pair of shoplifters as they fled from a Home Depot near Detroit.
She wasn’t, at least in the eyes of the law.
On Wednesday, a Michigan judge sentenced Duva-Rodriguez to 18 months of probation and stripped the 46-year-old of her concealed gun permit.
Duva-Rodriguez didn’t manage to stop the shoplifters when she rattled off several rounds outside an Auburn Hills Home Depot on Oct. 6, although she did flatten one of their tires.
…
“I learned my lesson that I will never help anybody again.”
She, at least, learned that the only thing that can stop an inflated tire is a good guy with a gun.

In other news, President Obama signs three constructive gun measures
The day before Thanksgiving, President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), S.1356. The primary purpose of the act was to provide funds for operation of the U.S. military. However, the act also includes several other provisions to protect Second Amendment rights, …
The first measure, in Section 315 of the NDAA, prohibits an administrative ban on lead ammunition. …
In 2009, a jihadist attacked the Fort Hood military base in Texas. He murdered 13 unarmed victims and wounded 30. The military personnel there were defenseless, so the criminal was not stopped until military police arrived. Section 526 of the NDAA takes a first step toward remedying the dangerous disarmament of our armed forces:
SEC. 526. Establishment of process by which members of the Armed Forces may carry an appropriate firearm on a military installation. …
NDAA Section 1087 sets up a procedure allowing the transfer of up to 10,000 surplus handguns to the CMP. These handguns are .45-caliber model “1911” pistols (named for their year of invention). For the military, these pistols have been replaced by the 9mm Beretta. The 1911 pistols are now collectors items, being warehoused at a cost of $200,000 per year. Selling them via the CMP will reduce this expense and raise revenue.
The lead ammo item is a bit more complicated, but this is a good thing since a ban on lead ammo combined with armor piercing restrictions was seen as a possible avenue to ban large amounts of ammo. This prevents that.
Thanks, President Obama!

In other news, Victim shoots suspect multiple times during attempted robbery
The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office arrested three individuals on Friday after they were forced to call 911 because one of their own had been shot by the person they were trying to rob.
At approximately 3:16 p.m. Friday, October 16, deputies received a call regarding a gunshot victim. Deputies located Mauricio King, 23, at the Shell gas station off Dixon Road near Interstate 530. He was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. King along with Leonard Quinton Braxton, 19, Annamarie Blair, 19, and Antwaun Branscomb, 17 all stated that King was just walking down Arch Street when he was shot.
After further investigation, officials discovered that all four individuals provided false statements. More recent reports state that the group was trying to rob the occupants of a residence located in the 16,000 block of Windham Drive and there was a struggle. One of the victims in the residence pulled out a gun and shot King several times.
Had to call 911 for themselves after a failed robbery. That’s got to be embarrassing.

Police say two men wearing ski masks entered a Texaco convenience store in the 5400 block of Airport Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. Sunday and demanded money while holding the clerk at gunpoint. Police say the clerk grabbed a shotgun under the counter before he and the suspects exchanged gunfire.
Officials say the clerk and one of the two suspects was shot. Both suspects ran
