Been out for a few days, catching up on current events.
In other news, Good Samaritan pulls gun to stop alleged hit-and-run driver
In the dramatic video taken by a bystander before it was posted to Facebook, Brandon Francis could be seen pulling his gun and making a citizen’s arrest of Shaykin. Francis says what you don’t see on the video are the moments leading up to the confrontation.
According to Francis, after hitting the pedestrian, Shaykin kept driving, so Francis said he quickly followed.
“I went to cut him off, and he still went to go, so that’s when I jumped out of my car and drew my firearm and was like you need to get the heck out of the car,” Francis said. “I have all rights to do a citizen’s arrest because he’s doing a hit and run and he could have just killed that guy, so I drew my firearm not only in my self-defense but in everyone else’s self-defense that was at that intersection.”
Metro Police officers arrived on scene shortly after the confrontation, and Francis’ weapon was still drawn; his foot was on Shaykin’s back.
DGU with no injuries. Pretty ballsy move, but the bad guy was apprehended so ended well.
In other news, Two arrested in Myrtle Beach on attempted murder and kidnapping charges
According to warrants for Mason, on July 10, police responded to the 4500 block of North Kings Highway for a shooting incident. Police say they learned Mason forced entry into an apartment and physically assaulted a woman by pointing a gun at her and threatening to kill her. The warrant says Mason was calling for another person in the home and fired multiple shots.
The shots were fired near two children, ages 10 and 9, according to the warrants.
One of the victims was able to get to a weapon and returned fire, at which point Mason left the apartment, according to the warrant.
DGU with no injuries. Hard to say how many were present, but the two attackers were thwarted only after a resident was able to retrieve their weapon.
In other news, Home owner pulls gun on burglary suspect
According to the affidavit, the man said he walked to the front of the house and saw a silver Chrysler Cruiser near the sidewalk. He then saw a male subject standing near the property and immediately pointed a gun at the suspect and told him not to move. The suspect said he was coming from a friend’s house and began to move away from the house towards the street.
Court documents say the homeowner then exited house with his shotgun as the suspect ran to his vehicle. The man hit the driver side window with the butt of the shotgun and the suspect fled the scene.
DGU with no injuries. Robbery in progress halted with no shots fired, and the robber apprehended. I would caution against pursuing an unknown number of intruders outside the house but this ended as well as it could have.

In other news, Meade County man holds burglar at gunpoint until police arrive
“When I pulled in the driveway and saw the side door open and the storm door closed,” Sheffield said, “that shouldn’t (have) been that way.”
Sheffield entered the home with his gun drawn and came face to face with Jones, who had a machete in hand.
"He hesitated for a second, and I said, ‘Go down, or your dead.’ And he said, ‘Alright, alright, alright,’” Sheffield said.
Sheffield then held Jones at gunpoint while he called 911 and waited until police arrive.
"Your security is all gone and you just don’t feel secure in your own house,” Sheffield said.
But then, five days later, the Sheffields received another blow.
“I was shocked when I called police and they said (Jones) was released on a bond for $1,000,” Sheffield said.
DGU with no injuries. Brought a machete to a gun fight. The robber did shoot the resident’s dog with a pellet gun, threw a knife at it, and then shot it with an actual firearm. After all that, and found in possession of other stolen property, he was released on bond.
The article says the dog will recover.
Court strikes down sweeping gun control measures in U.S. territory
A federal ruling issued this week struck down a handgun registration scheme, a ban on assault weapons and public carry, and a $1,000 excise tax on handguns in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
A thousand dollar excise tax? I’m surprised they hadn’t tried to make it an annual registration fee.

In other news, Cashier shoots and kills attempted store robber in Lancaster
DGU with one death. Robber brought a BB gun to a gun fight and lost.
In other news, Friday night fight ends when machete-swinging Baton Rouge man gets shot at, deputies say
Deputies went to a Jasper Avenue apartment complex around 11 p.m. Friday after gunshot-detecting software was activated. Outside the complex, the deputies found Concepcion Vega, 33, who said he’d been shot at while arguing with someone in the parking lot, a Sheriff’s Office report says. No one was injured.
…
The trio later told detectives they’d gone to the Jasper Avenue residence to pick up some personal belongings when Vega started arguing with one of them in the parking lot, the report says. Vega went inside his apartment and came back with a machete, which he started swinging at the man “in an aggressive manner.”
The man pulled out a handgun and fired two shots toward Vega, who then retreated, the report says. The man left the area and called 911.
DGU with no deaths. Guy brought a machete to a gunfight - what’s up with machetes. In any event, it looks like both the aggressor with the machete and the defensive shooter called 911 to report the incident and only the aggressor was arrested. I find it fascinating that there is gun shot detecting technology being employed.
Texas Store Employee Uses AK-47 to Stop 4 Armed Robbers
It’s getting so a crook can’t make a dishonest living these days.
Did multiple employees open up when there were customers in the store? The article says the guy asked for “jewelry and purses”.

I thought it was interesting that the article included this passage. It’s nice to see an article include such information, cutting off talk about a “machine gun” or “automatic” weapon:
I got a kick out of this:
Four robbers and three employees shooting might just result in some broken windows.
The story isn’t entirely clear on whether the customers were in the store this time or during the previously reported attempted robbery. Demanding purses could be referencing female employees.
Yes, but not wallets, customers present or not.

In other news, Lumberton store employee thwarts robbery by shooting suspect
man, identified as Franklin McLaurin, no age given, of Bladen County, walked into the store and pointed a handgun at the head of an employee. The second employee produced a handgun and shot McLaurin, the release said.
McLaurin ran away, but police, with the assistance of specially trained dog, found him hiding in bushes a few blocks away.
DGU with no deaths. That guy gets employee of the month. And again, shot placement is critical.
The number of folks who produce a weapon while one is being pointed at them surprises me.
Not an IME, but I expect that a robber is going to be glancing around to make sure no one else is coming on the scene providing opportunities to bring your own weapon to bear while his attention is elsewhere. Also, most CCW holders put their weapons in the general vicinity of where their wallet or valuables could be. The criminal demanding your money won’t know you’re reaching for a weapon rather than your wallet.
A fellow here, in a small country store shot a robber who was pointing a gun at him.
“Get the money under the counter.”
Anyone who has watched a Western knows that the bartender keeps a firearm under the bar with the money.

In other news, Rankin County prowler run off by armed homeowner
A release from Rankin County Undersheriff Raymond Duke said the man rang the doorbell, which woke the homeowners. When they checked the video, they saw a man looking into the surveillance camera, and he appeared to mouth the words, “there’s a camera.”
Duke’s release said that a minivan sped away after that. Also in the surveillance footage, the suspect was seen looking into windows and trying to go into the garage. The homeowner went to the front lawn armed with a handgun and advised him to leave the property.
DGU with no injuries. I would typically advise not to leave the residence as there are potentially many unknowns and inside is a more defensible position.
In other news, 77-year old with shotgun confronts burglars in Jefferson County
Early in the morning on July 17, a 77-year-old woman heard a noise in her house in the area of Rock Creek Road and Highway 30, detectives say.
“She grabs the shotgun and goes back to where she hears a noise and finds two individuals inside one of her spare bedrooms," explained Detective Sergeant James Kauzler with Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
When the suspects saw the gun, they jumped out of the bathroom window they used to get into the house, police say.
DGU with no injuries. 2v1 and the one 77 year old prevailed. Hopefully it was more than a double barrel.

In other news, 75-year-old woman shoots suspect after being beaten and robbed at her home
“They pulled the drawers out and threw them over the bed while the kids were standing in the corner of the bedroom,” Ring said.
She added the the male suspect pushed her to the floor, but she managed to get up and make it to her bedroom where she kept a gun.
“I said, ‘You want to play with guns?’” Ring said as she demonstrated how she pointed the weapon at the suspects.
Ring said when she shot the suspect, he fell against the refrigerator in the kitchen and both took off.
The grandmother claims she has been robbed before at her home. That incident happened about about a year ago, when robbers impersonating officers pretended to serve a warrant for one of her daughters, came into her home, tied her up and held her at gunpoint, demanding money and prescription pills, Ring said.
DGU with no deaths. 75 year old great grandmother vs. 2 intruders. Shot placement is critical again, keeping in mind tat mere ownership of a firearm doesn’t do much unless you have access to it.
In other news, Home invasion ends in shooting
Deputies from the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Klines Mill road around 4.A.M Thursday for reports of and unwanted man in on someone’s porch.
When the deputies got there, officials said the man ran around to the back of the house, and forced his way through a locked door.
Once the intruder was inside, the resident shot him, authorities said.
DGU with no deaths. Seems straightforward here - wait inside, call police. If the bad guy makes entry, shoot him.

TACOMA, Wash. – A man carrying a concealed pistol shot and killed a robber Friday after the robber attempted to steal from him, authorities said.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the 26-year-old robber as Terry Webb.
Loretta Cool, spokeswoman for the Tacoma Police Department, said Webb was attempting to rob two people at gunpoint in the 1200 block of Division Avenue.
The man who shot Webb has a concealed weapon license, Cool said.
Webb was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.
