From last week in Metairie, Louisiana, a man with a machete was threatening a clerk at a convenience store, but was disarmed and fled when a customer pulled a gun. The machete-wielding man was arrested when he returned to the store while the police were still investigating the incident.
From a few days ago in LaGrange, Georgia, a man began beating a customer at a drug store with a metal scaffolding foot jack (which I gather is a large metal part from a scaffold). The victim of the attack then drew a handgun and shot the attacker in the chest. The attacker, who fled the scene and ran to a police station, was taken to a hospital for treatment, and is also facing charges of aggravated assault.
9th Circuit ends California ban on high-capacity magazines
The headline is sufficient summary that I’ll forgo a quote for that.
But,
[California Attorney General] Becerra also did not say if he would ask a larger 11-judge appellate panel to reconsider the ruling by the three judges, or if he would appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
I can envision him appealing to the larger panel, but SCOTUS is right outta there. No way in hell will he risk imposing this ruling on the Eastern states with magazine bans.
From three days ago in Philadelphia, a young man flagged down police who were responding to a reported home invasion and said he had been shot while walking down the street. Police determined that the wounded 17-year-old and an unknown accomplice had attempted to kick down the door to someone’s house, which is when the homeowner shot and wounded the 17-year-old. The wounded youth was taken to a nearby hospital and then arrested*. Police are still searching for the young man’s accomplice.
*The story’s actually a little unclear on the sequence of events; on the one hand, “[the wounded 17-year-old] was transported to a nearby hospital and his condition is unknown” but on the other hand “Police say the teen was arrested for his part in the attempted home invasion.”
Local journalism has really gone to hell.
From a week ago in Lincoln, Nebraska, a man who intiially claimed to be collecting for charity attempted to steal an 88-year-old man’s wallet at knife-point, but fled when his victim claimed to have a concealed carry license. It’s not clear from the article if the victim actually had a gun on him, or even if he really had a concealed carry license, but the would-be robber clearly believed him.
From yesterday (following up on a story from last week) in Fort Wright, Kentucky, prosecutors indicate they will not be pressing charges against a motorist in a fatal shooting, after concluding that the shooter acted in self-defense. The man he shot and killed first crashed his car into the shooter’s, then approached him on foot carrying a bolt-action rifle. The shooter–who was already on the phone with 911 reporting the collision–then fatally shot the rifle-wielding aggressor with a handgun.
From last week in Chicago, a man broke into a house on Wednesday afternoon, but fled after he was shot and injured by the homeowner. The intruder is in good condition (and also in custody).
Ansley is a bad ass for sure. The video of her going for the gun is very impressive. You don’t mess with mama bear when the cub is there.
She’s a model too. Looks fantastic, shoots guns and protects her family?
This sounds like a setup. They need to think carefully about who they invite to their home. They’re very lucky no one got hit.
A follow up from an incident that happened in August, authorities in Colorado Springs have declined to file charges against a man who fatally shot another man, ruling it was a justified self-defense shooting. The man who was killed had attacked the shooter, who sustained head injuries from that attack, including skull fractures.
You bet - never bring knuckles to a gunfight. Oh, the other guy LOST his gun…?
Dan
From this Tuesday in Webster, New York, a homeowner shot and critically wounded a man who had broken into his house. The story is a bit preliminary–no charges had been filed as of Tuesday evening, but there’s a lot of discussion in the article about whether or not the District Attorney might still decide the shooting was not justified:
On the other hand, we’re apparently talking about a case where a burglar broke into someone’s home at 1:30 in the morning. Even in New York State, I would think a defensive shooting would be seen as justifiable in such circumstances (barring some extraordinary and as-yet-unreported set of facts).
From last week in Coldwater, Michigan, a homeowner came home from work around 5:30 in the morning on Friday, and noticed a strange vehicle parked in the driveway and the light on in his garage. He discovered an intruder in the garage who was drinking some milk from his refrigerator. The intruder had also drunk some of the homeowner’s beer, and taken some steaks from his refrigerator, which the intruder was cooking on the homeowner’s grill. The intruder was playing music from the stereo, and had turned on a fog machine that the occupants of the house were planning to use tonight (Halloween). The homeowner retrieved a handgun, called 911, and held the intruder at gunpoint until police arrived. The homeowner’s wife and children were asleep in the house during the whole incident.
Finally found a couple of extra magazines for my M1, in not too bad condition and they came with a belt pouch in great condition, dated 1944. Weeee! Coyotes, beware!
From yesterday in Asheville, NC, two men were arguing when one of them attacked the other with a knife. The second man, who has a concealed carry permit, “displayed” his handgun, which caused the man with the knife to run away. The knife-wielding attacker was arrested a short time later and has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
Does this belong in Positive Gun News or Stupid Knife News?
Well, you know what they say about knives and gunfights…
From a couple of weeks ago in Paradise, Pennsylvania, a 72-year-old homeowner saw a man outside his house. When the homeowner spoke to him, the other man seemed to be acting erratically and asked the homeowner to call the police, saying someone was going to kill him. The homeowner did so, asking the other man to wait outside, but while the homeowner was on the phone with 911, the other man crashed through a window and into the house. The homeowner, who is a Vietnam veteran, had a pistol and held the other man at gunpoint until police arrived. The other man has been charged with several crimes (although it sounds to me to have been a case of drugs and/or mental health issues more than any criminal intent).
Not a specific news item, but an interesting article from New York magazine, ‘Self-Defense Is Self-Care’: How the Growing Ranks of Left-Wing Gun Owners See the Election.
From last week in Royal, Arkansas, a homeowner saw a man trying to steal 4-wheelers from in front of his house on Sunday evening. The homeowner went outside and confronted the would-be thief, who started to come at the homeowner “in an aggressive manner”; until the homeowner, who was armed with a pistol, ordered the man to stop and get on the ground. The homeowner then held the man until law enforcement arrived.
I have no problem with responsible, disciplined, trained gun owners any more than I have a problem with responsible and trained people with a driver’s license and a car. What I do have a problem with is people who are a danger to society in general and the people around them in particular because, for one reason or another, they are not competent enough to safely own and operate a firearm.
This is a good thread because it shows that guns are not by nature evil and that gun owners are not by nature undesirable or dangerous. As I’ve said many times, there has to be a balance between individual rights and social responsibility.
